Film you recently watched: part 3

Watched it tonight in glorious 3D. Very dark for a Star Trek film and a lot of time spent on planet, but when the budget was finally spent towards the end the scenes were outstanding. Really enjoyed the scene with the music being broadcast over VHF.

 

ST Beyond: Simon Pegg did a great job with the script and my wife and I really enjoy Bones' interplay with Spock. Karl Urban is so good with Quinto. That said, I didn't buy Bones being a pilot. Agreed on the VHF music scene. Beastie Boys tunes have been a feature of the last three movies.

 

I agree with the above, I thought Star Trek was absolutely brilliant, my inner nerd was most pleased. Glad I chose to watch that over Bourne, which I'll probably see next week. Really want to try and avoid suicide squad, it looks truly terrible.

 

Saw Bourne tonight. If you've seen them, and liked them, you'll like this too.

 

Is Suicide Squad worth seeing?

 

Watched Donnie Darko for the first time, not really a fan.

 

With regards to Star Trek and the sad passing of Anton Yelchin, I watch Odd Thomas again last night and enjoyed it even more. It was an unexpected and enjoyable film first time I saw it.

 

Nope. It was awful. I'd probably say it was even worse than Batman v Superman.

Totally without any real direction, the complete overhyping of The Joker in the trailers for such a small and completely inconsequential role and the biggest disappointment of the year in both the character of Harley Quinn and the portrayal of her by Margot Robbie.

 

I'd heard mixed reviews, was it that bad?

Or is it so bad it's good?

Can't make my mind up whether to go and see it.

DC are way behind Marvel on the big screen you'd have thought the Dark Knight trilogy would have propelled them, they seem to have gone backwards.

 

Yeah, as I may have mentioned, my good friend is a VP at the company that makes those films and talking to him about it, even before Batman v superman, I knew they didn't have a clue, and still don't. Every time a new one is coming, they get so excited that they finally fixed the issues with the last one and then EL FLOPPADITO it's the same thing all over again. They have no idea why Dark Knight trilogy worked, and why all the rest suck ass. It's weird. They're really struggling now that the LOTR and Potter films are mostly gone. To be fair the whole industry is shrinking, but this should be a home run and it is very very far from it.

 

This seems to be so crazy. Call me naive but you'd think they have so much amazing material to work from out of the comics that the script can pretty much write itself. Get a decent director, cast 1, maybe 2 good leads and crack on. It should be easy money. Doesn't seem to be rocket science.

 

I bought the extended version of the Batman v Superman blu-ray, and the running time is increased to 3 hours but the scenes re-added make some of what went on make a lot more sense.. improved the film no end.

 

3 excellent and thoroughly recommended films (all totally different)

Suicide Squad, I was so hoping this would be better than it was. Why can't bad guys just be bad guys anymore? The story was also all over the place and it wasn't worth the hype. Don't even get me started on the music.

 

Agreed. I thought it was sh!t.

It's a good thing Margot Robbie is eye candy because I thought her character was annoying and unfunny.

As our colonial cousins would say, DC certainly 'screwed the pooch' on that one...I would not pay to watch a sequel and they've pretty much lost me as a paying customer.

I'm officially a Marvel fanboy now.

 

I liked Margot Robbie, probably the best bit. Another point, no need for The Joker at all in it.

 

I just saw suicide squad and to be honest it was underwhelming at best. Not a terrible movie, but had the potential to be a great film and it just isn't. The laughs feel forced and literally all the best bits are in the trailers. I actually thought the joker was the best bit about the film, jared Leto certainly made him seemed ****ed up enough. Not quite a Heath ledger esque portrayal but not far off. The soundtrack was good too.

Eye in the Sky - a brilliant film about drone warfare. Really enjoyed it, a good watch.

 

Hologram For The King - Beautiful film, Tom Hanks is superb as always.

 

I watched The Blues Brothers on Dave last night,hadn't seen it for 25 years.

So great to see Aretha,Ray Charles,Cab Calloway,John Lee and all the band, Donald 'Duck' Dunn and his four lines!

So long since John Belushi died,what a waste.:dismay:

 

I watched No Country For Old Men last night on Netflix, very good film.

 

I saw a wonderfully weird little film called Frank on Film4 last night, worth a watch.

 

I would recommend a Turkish film called 'Karate Girl'

The subtle performances are a joy, the direction is impeccable and the special effects are before their time.

Room 237, it is a documentary about a few peoples interpretations of the The Shining film by Kubrick. Well worth a watch, its about how human perceptions when looking at the same thing can be wildly different.

Some of the fan theories are great, others had me shouting at the screen with their ridiculousness! Great watch

 

I finally saw Zootopia and Finding Dory.

I love animated films, and they were certainly very good, but not quite to the level of Up or Inside Out.

 

Some of the theories were strange but I liked how they fitted their theories into what they saw, writing their own stories. I think this is what is happening in The Shining.

It makes me think of the apes fighting over the monilith in 2001, they dont know wtf it is really but are willing to kill other apes to keep control over it. It might be a pointer towards the human condition maybe (Space Monkeys), who knows.

 

Terminator Salvation (yes I'm behind a bit).

No idea what was happening most of the time. Was there even a storyline? Just jumped from scene to scene without anything really linking anything together. Good CGI I guess.

 

Honestly think the animation in this film is the best I've seen.

 

The third in the Star Trek trilogy....

Wonderful in every way.

Mean Girls 2.

 

I watched Pacific Rim lastnight, the action was great but some of the acting was a bit crap so unsure how I feel about it really.

 

I watched 'I, Daniel Blake' today. A film about a 59 year old widow and his struggles to negotiate the benefits system.

Whilst bored and keen to work, he is told by medical professionals that he is unable to after a recent heart attack; this view is not shared by the systematic and rigid points system which determines incapacity benefits.

I went into the film with an open mind, although expecting it to be a little preachy.

In parts the script seemed a little forced, as the actors tried to explain the ins and outs of the system. However, the genius lies in the moving and, at times, fairly difficult-to-watch moments of unspoken emotion. The rage which builds up in the background is not sudden and not always overt, often being placed in the background after incredibly realistic moments of sympathy and kindness.

The directing is great, and allows you to feel like you are an ordinary 'citizen' who is just watching on; like the extras who turn and face characters walking past. Sometimes the camera sits at the other end of a cafe, and just allows us to watch for a few seconds without hearing actual conversations. The acting, by Dave Johns and (especially) Hayley Squires, is fantastic and beautifully understated.

The ending, whilst predictable, really hits the message home. After you've sat for the best part of two hours, with a strong character who continuously shows defiance, dignity and strength for others, we are reminded that there are limits to one's power, in a system designed to de-individualise.

But, that the individual, in fact, is the entire point.

I'll give it an 8/10. Well worth seeing, and a film which genuinely altered my perspective on social justice.
