It does appear the inevitable outcome and something to be hugely grateful for.

In the meantime it’s depressing that fatalities are so high in many countries, including the US where 100 children have died in five weeks. The vaccine effort globally needs to keep going and eliminate the threat.

Hmmm...is that high? My first reaction is probably not. Google says there are 73,000,000 children in the USA (as of 2019 anyway). Statistically, and tragically, a small proportion are going to die of something every five weeks. And I imagine it's the same trend as we've seen here and elsewhere in the West that it's the clinically extremely vulnerable children who are succumbing.

Well that’s no reason not to ensure they don’t die from something like Covid that is now largely preventable without even great inconvenience.

I think without knowing why they died of Covid that's probably stretching things a bit too far. I agree with your general point though - we need to ensure far more people in far more countries get the vaccine.

This is a daft merry-go-round. People get sick from things like cancer and quite often they recover. If at their low ebb Covid kills them, then Covid is a killer to be avoided.

We all know most footballers are as thick as two short planks, but nice of some of them to remind us with their attitude towards Covid vaccinations.

There's no fighting. But it's completely valid to hold the scientists and academics who seek to influence (or even dictate) public policy decisions to account, even after the event. There are essentially no restrictions at the moment yet even their modest lower band projections have proven to be significantly over the top.

It would be helpful to see where this graph comes from and in what context. I’m not even sure that the hospitalisations figure is correct.

But certainly things look better than were expected by experts, who, even so, were not asking for restrictions. At the moment we don’t know whether this is because the mild weather has shifted autumn back or the likelihood of hospitalisations is greatly reduced through vaccination and treatment protocols. Excellent if it’s the latter.

Thing is, you’ve been shooting the thing on one metric or another since March 2020 when people were arguing surplus deaths might not even be significant. It wasn’t correct then and this finger pointing disbelief isn’t right now either. They are models and depend solely on the assumptions made at the time. There will be new ones two months down the line and this is no time to drop vigilance or preparedness nor to simply deride their expertise.

I find it hard to believe those projections were made a month ago as implied, given the vaccination level. Could it have been a 2020 graph? As you say, context is everything.

The underlying data is published here: https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare?areaType=nation&areaName=England

And respectfully, as much as I've been skeptical about the way a lot of the case has been presented throughout, you're equally as prone to overly supporting it even in the face of some obvious deficiencies. I can accept the science is not perfect but not when it's being (has been) used to impose highly restrictive laws on us or scare the bejesus out of large parts of the population. And it is still is - these graphs were wheeled out in September to say this is likely to be what's coming and they're just flat wrong. And I can't remember a single projection yet, after 18+ months and loads of different institutions churning that out, that has even been in the ballpark. It'd be more honest if they just omitted all the graphs and projection work and just put 8 words down instead:

"We have no idea what will happen next"

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/doomsday-covid-models-badly-wrong/

They were presented by SAGE to the government last month. It seems they just adapted some even wonkier models from July to create their September projections on the fly.

    Good science!

Sorry, but I’ve not ‘over supported’ anything. I’ve advocated a cautious approach from the off as best for health and the economy. That doesn’t rely on data.

And sorry to say for the haterz, even Ferguson’s original estimates have not proven so wild.

Potentially the biggest issue now and those most at risk are those un- vaccinated which is why there is a big drive to make sure they are but they'll say it's quite within their rights not to have one.

We will now have a situation where people have had 3 jabs but others have had none!

If people don't want the vaccine then they don't have to. But why to they care if other people take it? I don't get it.

They seem to want freedom of speech and choice but then want to stop others from choosing to do what they want.

Anyone had problems with vaccinations given not recorded on patients details?

I only ask as have hit a wall trying to arrange a booster for a 96 year old. Only to be told that they won’t administer it as his second dose is not recorded on the “system”. He received his second dose three weeks after his first, so very early in the programme.

I tried to say ok then can we arrange his second dose, but that failed too. So now have to do a forensic search of the house to find his paper record card.

This morning’s headlines probably won’t make for pretty reading for the Government and their experts regarding the early handling of the pandemic.

Mind you there is praise for the vaccine roll out.

That seems bizarre. Make a complaint to the surgery through the NHS process and tell them you’ll take it to Stage Two and the Ombudsman if necessary. They simply have to reassure themselves he hasn’t had one in the last eight weeks.

I got an email from WBGS this morning, some anti vaxers turned up at the school at hometime yesterday.

A very measured response from the headmaster, I like the fact that the school will remind students to use the bins!

As for videoing students, do these protesters not realise that some pupils may be vulnerable and images of them should not be shared online?

Good News: My daughter’s school vaccinated all the over 12s, who had parental consent, last week.
Bad News: It came too late to prevent an outbreak at school. Around 30 kids in my daughter’s year (fifth year/year 11) are off with it and cases are still rising. They’ve gone back to testing them twice a week at school and are asking us to continue with twice weekly testing at home in addition to this.

In fairness it doesn’t appear the vaccine can do much to prevent outbreaks anyway. Cases are still pretty high nationally, but hospitalisations and deaths are well down which shows they’re doing their main job.

I’m not really sure why schools are still fretting about it to be honest. The likelihood of school closures by government has reduced so much in about 8 months that it’s almost serving no purpose to keep proactively checking children for it.

Well the kids with it have all been ill so I imagine they’re trying to get it under control so that everyone doesn’t end up being off sick. Plus, there might be teachers who are vulnerable and the schools have to try to protect them too.

There’s an increasing body of evidence to the contrary, even against delta. They won’t stop it entirely, for sure, but vaccination appears very helpful in reducing transmission, sending Johnny Covid up cul de sacs it won’t emerge from.
