So no World Cup but bidding for the Euros in 2028. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60285799 Hopefully UEFA will be kind and the 2021 Euro final violence doesn’t impact our chances!
UEFA love Wembley because of how much €€€ it brings in for them from the plastic corporates. The authorities will have to be far more proactive in how they control access to the stadium or even within a mile of it next time.
Of course - money will be the main factor in who gets thr tournament ! They will have no excuses next time . Or just hope we don’t get to the final !
Not sure now is the time to be spending money and effort on a sports hosting bid tbh. We're highly unlikly to get it unless there's an opprtunity to rip us off big time.
The Times seems to think we are the only candidates. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...5?shareToken=1d927d7b18b581c369f7458e6da1dae4
Presumably it'll still be mainly England hosting? NI has probably 1 stadium up to spec, RoI and Wales 2 each and Scotland 3.
Very few nations capable or willing to host these bloated competitions now. The 2028 Euros may well be expanded to 32 teams, which is absolutely barmy. A host nation 'only' needs 10 grounds but one must have 60,000 seats, one (preferably two) must have 50,000, four must have 40,000 seats and the remainder must have 30,000 seats. The solution is multi-national bids but it looks like the Romania-Greece-Bulgaria-Serbia bid won't happen, and nor will Turkey, having been unsuccessful several times before. Germany is hosting the next one but it's got to a point where France, Italy, Spain aren't even interested such is the cost. On top of that, some of Italy's major grounds – while big enough – are in a seriously run-down state.
On the plans to expand to 32 teams for 2028 (which hasn't been confirmed but you can bet the bean-counters at Nyon will push hard for it) – Uefa has confirmed none of the host nations will qualify automatically. There are 54 nations in Uefa at the moment so there'd be an 18-month qualification period to eliminate 22 teams.
Not good enough to host the World Cup but good enough to host the poxy Euros. The Watford FC of tournament hosting. Mexico will have hosted it a minimum of 3 times since we last did. The US, the bloody US, twice.
Having proved ourselves incapable of hosting a major international football final in 2020 I'm amazed we've had the cheek to throw our hats into the ring or that Uefa will be prepared to even consider our bid
Money.. Few brown envelopes and as @EnjoytheGame says not many want or can afford to host it. Going to look funny when England are the only hosts to qualify !
Russia has tabled an expression of interest in hosting. Blimey. They've some front. Turkey not out of the running either, which goes against all the supposedly informed reporting I'd seen.
If you English chaps are coming over to Ireland in 2028 to watch some soccer, I would ask that you would all behave and be respectful of your hosts. Thanks.
I believe they've said they are entitled to it, and if it's put somewhere else, they will bloody well go and get it back.
https://mobile.twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1506691452394426372 Turkey have been trying for about 12-10 years to get a tournament. But they just miss out mainly due to politics. So have our media jumped the gun a bit ?
Looks like it’s coming home then . Read before all the teams will still have to qualify and there will be no direct entry for the hosts as there are too many . Like with Euro 2020/21.
What’s your point here ? Do you have an issue with Mick Lynch, or with the option of labour organisations to strike ?
Sorry MH, in fairness I wasn’t clear! Absolutely no issue with Lynch at all and fully support the ongoing industrial action - was supposed to be highlighting the undoubted potential of such an event if (somehow) a resolution hadn’t been struck.
Nothing compared to the 2030 World Cup ! 6 counties , 3 continents . https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67010609
The good news is we will have HS2 by then which means I can get to a game in London and then Manchester in the same day.
