"Originally Nyango Star was an ordinary white cat. Dead and buried in an apple farm, he was reborn as an apple fruit, but was rejected by his owner because of his unrecognizable transformation. The elder apple tree then told him to reach [[Holywood]] to return into the white cat he had used to be. Nyango believed it and started his musical journey." https://en.everybodywiki.com/Nyango_Star

As a comparative new boy, I've just finished reading (nearly all) this thread. I'm an engineer by training, but worked for 9 years at Birmingham Conservatoire. I'm therefore interested in any attempts to quantify the quality of music. (Engineers always want to put a number on things.) And, being 64, I don't think modern popular music is a patch on what I grew up with (though I acknowledge this may just be me being a grumpy old man).

Anyway, I have found an article that describes a scientific study of changes in pop music over the last 50 years, which may be of interest to those assembled here:

"Besides the decline of music literacy and participation, there has also been a decline in the quality of music which has been proven scientifically by Joan Serra, a postdoctoral scholar at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the Spanish National Research Council in Barcelona. Joan and his colleagues looked at 500,000 pieces of music between 1955-2010, running songs through a complex set of algorithms examining three aspects of those songs:

    1. Timbre- sound color, texture and tone quality

    2. Pitch- harmonic content of the piece, including its chords, melody, and tonal arrangements

    3. Loudness- volume variance adding richness and depth

The results of the study revealed that timbral variety went down over time, meaning songs are becoming more homogeneous. Translation: most pop music now sounds the same. Timbral quality peaked in the 60’s and has since dropped steadily with less diversity of instruments and recording techniques. Today’s pop music is largely the same with a combination of keyboard, drum machine and computer software greatly diminishing the creativity and originality. Pitch has also decreased, with the number of chords and different melodies declining. Pitch content has also decreased, with the number of chords and different melodies declining as musicians today are less adventurous in moving from one chord or note to another, opting for well-trod paths by their predecessors. Loudness was found to have increased by about one decibel every eight years. Music loudness has been manipulated by the use of compression. Compression boosts the volume of the quietest parts of the song so they match the loudest parts, reducing dynamic range. With everything now loud, it gives music a muddled sound, as everything has less punch and vibrancy due to compression."

Not sure i've ever shared what sort of music I'm into, and it might surprise you! Give it a chance for a couple of minutes at least - close your eyes and get transported away.

Honestly it's such a misunderstood and misrepresented genre of music that has a ridiculous amount of layers and sounds to it.

Part of me agrees with this view, but I’m wary of it. I’m not sure if it is comparing like with like.

In the early days of popular music, it was made by musicians only. Only they could get access to the facilities to record. With the advent of digital technology, music has been democratised. The high bar that needed to be cleared to record and perform has been lowered.

While there is definitely some tendency towards a narrowing of sound, that has been in evidence at least since the mid eighties. It can rarely have been worse than in the SAW era. But technology also means that decent amateurs, with a good idea, can record it and develop those ideas. Sometimes, as it was during punk and new wave, those amateur ideas are thrilling and they can be now.

Huge amounts of music is produced now, much of which is heard by very few. I’m a ‘patreon’ for a singer songwriter. She’s fab imo, superior to most chart music in ideas and tone. But she will never be famous. She eeks out a living from a few hundred people who love her music. Her music wouldn’t have got into the study you quote.

I think we have to be very careful not to compare apples with oranges. There are just as many good performers and writers. It’s just different and it’s not speaking so clearly to us, because we are older.

Indeed was just about to bring this up after your first couple of sentences. Modern pop music is for the most part turgid and the performers lack talent. They really do. Ululating, endless repetition of the same so called lyrics. Absolutely no meaning to the song if you actually look at it and zero coherence. The masses are force fed it and lap it up. It's drivel. Like Harry Styles. An hour of the same mob is enough to drive one insane.

In addition to the famous Bad Moon Rising, these are great songs.
