Burnley have actually surprised me quite a bit, not the fact they're top but the manner they're doing it.

I know when they appointed Kompany they changed their style significantly for the better and having players well suited for a Championship promotion battle they'd be one of the favourites, but having been out of the Championship for quite some time I thought they'd struggle a bit to readjust and at best have a season more like their last two promotions under Dyche - consistent and efficient but without ever being really spectacular or dominant. But they could actually set a Championship points record if they up their form just a little bit...

The Championship record is 106 set by the Reading team that went up with us (and although football did not begin in 2004, I cannot say what the overall second tier record is!), Burnley can get a maximum of 110, unlikely, but not impossible that they break the record. They are a completely new team, which was probably much needed considering their established pros who had battled against the tide for so long were getting on a bit; they have spent a lot, and clearly spent it very wisely, but you have to give credit to Kompany as it's rather evident that he's had a say in many of those signings, and it's not easy to get so many players to gel

Rob Edwards currently only on 1.84 points per game with Luton, seriously out of his depth.

While Reading have the all-time highest number of points, it looks like the most dominant second tier season of all was by Tottenham in 1920 when they got to 70 points (2 points for a win) in a 42 game season. They won 32 matches, so this scales up to 102 points on a 3 for a win equivalent and perhaps 112 points had it been a 46 game season.

Amazing how we are only three points off 7th after tonight. I've never seen such a tightly contested race for the playoffs. It's a good job we actually turned up last night, if we actually do manage back to back wins and beat Wigan on Saturday, (other results of pending of course) we "could" be sat three points off 6th going into the break. That would pretty nice, but again we are so heavily relying on form sides to slip up at some point. Lootown are the only side we can take points off, and that comes after the break. All that matters now is beating Wigan and I think trying to stay in touch as long as we can, while we begin to establish a style under Wilder.

Two wins shy and many would argue that Bilic was maybe here a game or two too long. Going to be interesting whatever happens!

Yes. Just think how out of his depth he will be next season, playing Citeh, Liverpool etc !

As opposed to us being out of our depth against half the championship teams we play next season.

In all seriousness, none of the teams below Sheff Utd apart from maybe Boro look good enough to survive in the Premier League even assuming they’ll do all they can to strengthen (Carrick’s West Ham, Spurs and Man Utd connections may help in attracting players). But you never know - Huddersfield survived after finishing with a negative goal difference and scraping through the play-offs, having been in promotion contention for the first time in a long time.

It doesn’t really matter about survival, Luton seem like a very well run club, and a nice £100m+ cash injection without buying a load of dud players from the Belgium 2nd division, and racking up a load of debt to do it will put them in very strong position for a club of their stature. Plus of course £55m PP the season after, at which point we will be on £0.

Yes my original post was of course a joke given he's clearly not out of his depth at all.....
They may not survive but they would be eating at the top table, and with relegation parachute monies anyway, they will be in the financial bracket above us for some time to come...

True. Maybe than can afford to hire a website designer to update their forum as well, so it's not stuck in the era between Windows 3.1 and 1995. Actually, keep it as, we soon won't have much to laud over them with. So having a better forum will be a right kick in the teeth for their fanbase i am sure.

It's looking fairly likely we won't make the play offs now and it's also looking fairly likely that the scum will. What a god awful season. Please god don't let them go up

Yes, 4 or 5 games from the end of the season it will simply come down to praying that Luton don't get promoted. Even beating them, which we won't, wouldn't get us into the POs or them out of it....

There's no way they could pull off that co-ordinated synchronised flag-waving. They can never top that.

I think the worry is Boro get second, then I think it really could be anyone’s and they would have a very good chance.

Not that I want it to happen of course, but you couldn’t really get a bigger wake up call for Gino than the manager he sacked after 10 games going on to take our deadly rivals up instead. If he didn’t have an epiphany at that stage, he never will.

I don’t have the same hatred of Luton many do, so I’ll freely admit I would love Edwards to stick it straight in that goon Pozzo’s eye. How Pozzo treated him was a disgrace.

When Sheffield United were losing, the gap to them lot was 4 points, which was scary! Glad they won, even if it means Boro are more likely to get playoffs and by extension play us if we somehow blag our way into them

I can't muster the enthusiasm to hate the bloke, after we canned him so soon, it was fair game, but although him getting promoted would be nothing less than Pozzo deserves, I can't say I wish him well!

Fair play. Would much rather people just admit they want to see Luton succeed. It's obvious enough from posts.

Credit to Rob, by the way. I've got nothing against him personally and hope he has a good career. Don't think he was the right fit here but that's not his fault, and he's doing a good job up the road. Obviously hope it crashes and burns because it's them, but credit where it's due.

It's now looking even more disgraceful. But it's also down to the slackers who were playing for him plus his odd team selections. Unfortunately he fell into a Pozzo puppet and as soon as that happened it was doomed to fail.

Ultimately most managers will be doomed to failure with us, because of the culture we’ve created and the type of player we’ve recruited. Edwards was clearly a very decent manager, but what Gino expects, and what can realistically be achieved with the situation he’s created are miles apart from each other.

I sort of get the desire to do it as a stick to beat Pozzo with, but I’d hold off on lauding Edwards too highly for now. I don’t think he should ever have been recruited given how bad a fit our club turned out to be for him but once here he made some pretty big mistakes too. I don’t think he handled the personalities well and having seen all his matches I’d say he was no closer in his last game to making them play coherently than his first. He didn’t show any tactical flexibility either – no signs of working with what he was given rather than what he hoped for.

In retrospect it smacks of the normal job equivalent of someone being promoted too quickly. He clearly didn’t have the ability at that point of his career to be a head coach within a higher-level football structure (ie. more people poking their nose in at the training ground and on matchdays, less influence for the head coach over wider footballing decisions and signings etc). And again, while I know some on here like the idea of someone socking it to Pozzo, I still can’t understand what made Edwards think he had the clout after three months to oust Giaretta. It was the last in a line of pretty naive moves really, though I’m sure he’s learned from it.

I’d say what works for him and his skill set at the moment is clearly a tight and limited setup, relying on a small squad with a ‘backs against the wall’ mentality and sharp recruitment. It worked at his last place and he found almost the perfect job to go into from here. That’s not a slight on Luton. There’s no doubt they’ve recruited really well over the past couple of years. We should have been in that market but Pozzo let Mogi run the show instead and spaffed all our cash at Belgian duds.

That’s the stick to beat Pozzo with I'd say. I can live with us going up, going down, maybe even a period of thin gruel in the Championship. But letting Luton get the better of us given our respective standings 6-7 years ago is pretty unforgiveable.

Apparently by the time he left he wanted out: even though he knew there'd be some interference, he didn't know quite how much there'd be. As much as Kamara on the right didn't work, it's the sort of 'point-making' which sort of made sense, at least he's the right sort of profile to play as a wing-back, whereas Gaspar is not, it's not as if he had a genuine alternative!

That's a very fair assessment. I would say more than half the World hate us now.
Every Watford player should read that quote and hopefully Wilder will before the upcoming battle.
