Watched In Brugge earlier this week for the first time in years and I’d forgotten just how good it is!

    Ah I love that film.

Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and the director thingy McDonagh have a new film out. Another black comedy/drama which is meant to be very good.

The Banshees of Inisherin. Saw it yesterday. Set on an island off Ireland in the 1920s, about a man whose best mate tells him he doesn't want to be friends anymore. Black humour, beautiful but bleak setting, brilliant acting, very powerful and unexpectedly moving. Great film, thoroughly recommended!

Thanks for that, my local indie cinema is showing it at the end of next month too. Get in there!

More "Film you recently missed....", but I'm really miffed that I forgot this was on at the Phoenix on Tuesday night with a Q&A from the great man himself:

    https://fatherearthmovie.com/watchthefilm/

As penance I've just bought vol 1 & 2 of "...Lounge Music..." so I can finally solve the conundrum of what was better one, Leee John or Mari Wilson, at my leisure (and yes H17's "Dandelion & Burdock" is by far the best cover).

    Just watched Tenet again.

Great film. Still find it confusing. I wonder how many times it'll take me to get it.

I watched a new version "All Quiet On The Western Front", available on Netflix, very well acted. I've never seen the previous versions of the film.

Watched Alone last night. Could have been a great film but for the fact that everything you wouldn't do when pursued by a lunatic is done by our heroine.
Mrs D told me to stop shouting at the screen, at which point I realised it had drawn me in completely.

    Worth a watch

Went to see this. Genuinely can’t say what I thought about it other than it’s very well done, gripping and in places both funny and moving.

However, I couldn’t tell by the end of it was profound or profoundly silly and I still can’t.

I watched this film. What a load of hoaky shyte! Absolutely dreadful. Weird echoey soundtrack, the clunkiest of wooden acting and a rubbish storyline.

Why offer him $1m to be in the hunt and then get so worried about the DVDs showing them offing poor old Tom Jones. Why Delilah why? Presumably their plan, should there be any official come back, would be to show them the contract and say "oh no, he agreed to being murdered, look". If there were some other cunning plan, why leave the DVDs lying around? Why not put them in a safe or something.

What an utter and complete load of kak.

And that bit about pawning his brother's helmet. He was a helmet.

And considering they're supposed to be crack top hunters, they're pretty shyte at shooting. Despite four of 'em blazing away with machine guns. Why doesn't he run away while the posh gang are sleeping? The area is fackin' humungous. It'd be easy to find some decent hidey hole far away and camp down for a week. Why go and hang around behind very thin trees around the baddies camp? Why would you do that?

And when the baddies are having their camp in the woods, where did they get their crystal tumblers from that they were drinking out of? Their backpacks?

In the end, after all that, his moany old wife left him anyway, with just a dear John letter. He didn't seem to mind too much anyway. He had his million dollars.

A true piece of utter nonsense.

Older film but watched Cure for Wellness the other week. Anyone seen it? Very creepy and haunting. Can't decide whether I loved it or whether it was dreadful. Definitely could have been 30 mins shorter.

I was flicking through Netflix on the weekend and came across "The Courier" starring Benedict Cumberbatch who played Greville Wynne, based on a true story of a KGB informer in the lead up the to Cuban missile crisis. I never knew about this story before, it was a very good watch. I think the film was released in 2020.

In search of a popcorn movie and a good night out we went to see Violent Night. It had good reviews, decent IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores etc. A ‘15’ billed as an ‘instant Christmas classic’ in the Home Alone and Die Hard tradition.

It was absolutely shyte and I advise you all to keep well away. Boring, witless, grossly stupid, one of the worst films I have ever seen. I’m left fathoming the question of who might a film be aiming at that blends sentimentality a five year old would find repugnant and incessant killing with a sledgehammer. Nasty stuff.

    Merry Christmas!

Tedious beyond belief and an unpleasant story. Connection with In Bruges is highly misleading. My wife loved it though.

    Christmas an mistletoe farm...

Terrible from start to finish. A skit from Mr tumble on a farm that's 90 minutes too long. However the "goat giving birth" scene is hilarious in its inaccuracies and how the lead actor catches the kids.

Onoda 10,000 Nights in the Jungle. Now, I wouldn't have watched it if I had seen this trailer beforehand:

It's quite a very clever film that explores the central notion of 'alienation/being different' - there's good bit in the middle of the film that's an excellent take on, modern day 'truthers/conspiracy theorists/interpreting what the MSM is hiding from you'.

Incidently, the real-life Onoda appeared to be a bit of an 'XRW nutter' campaigning for a return to traditional "...real Japanese values...".

The, actually of Lithuanian descent, Charles Bronson who played the 'Polish' tunneller who was based on the real Lithuanian Great Escapee Romas Marcinkus. I was in Vilnius and watched No. 1(F) Squadron RAF hold a commemorative 'missing plane' fly-past over Vilnius - rumour is this came about because to British Ambassador at the time was a "The Great Escape" 'fanboi'...

Was Hiroo Onoda actually a bandit on the run and this was the real reason why he wouldn't surrender ?

    'Probably'.

Although, the 'bandit' aspect is explored, somewhat uncomfortably, in the film.

I have seen this story on the Smithsonian channel . Whatever the truth be it a refusal to surrender or
going on the run from local Philippinos , it is an amazing show of endurance.

    Brilliant film.
I greatly enjoyed The Boy, the Mole the Fox and the Horse animation too.
    A beautiful book,which I've just re read.

Saw The Menu with Ralph Fiennes. Well I didn’t see it with Ralph, he was in it. I digress.

This is an artsy shocker, where a group of guests travel to dine at the most exclusive of restaurants on a private Island. Chef Ralph is a celebrated artist of his craft, running his kitchen like a cult. That something is awry with the whole set up is hinted at by absolutely everything. First act is highly enjoyable, well staged and acted, but it’s diminishing returns thereafter, eventually collapsing into unconvincing silliness.

The problem is, it sets out to satirise an easy target, the super rich and their pretentious dining and ends up being the thing it wants to send up. Daft and other films have explored the ‘everyone has their guilt, so must be punished’ theme far more convincingly.

You wait for a satire of the ultra rich and then three come along at once, the pretentious and silly The Menu, the latest ‘Knives Out’ fillum Glass Onion and The Triangle of Sadness. I’ve watched all three and of these Glass Onion is the most satisfying, with its pleasurable puncturing of the Musk type disrupter, gazzilionaire achiever as a mediocre and self-absorbed talent who lucked out.

The funniest, by far, is The Triangle of Sadness. Uneven and scatological, this follows a boutique cruise for mega-wealthy and nails superbly the discomforts of the relationship between those who can have everything and those who serve them.

Subtle metaphors are not its strongpoint. We are clearly on board the good ship Capitalism and boy is it heading for the rocks. By the time things get to Captain Woody Harrelson’s dinner, a storm is brewing in more ways than one, resulting in an absolutely hilarious and gross middle section of the film.

The final act makes its point well enough, but isn’t as sharp as it could be. It’s also slow to get going and overlong. But it’s worth it for Captain Woody and his drunken philosophical debating alone.

What I mean by that is it was the best executed. It’s a slick bit of film making, albeit simply Agatha Christie for 2023. It’s mildly diverting, that’s about it.

The Triangle of Sadness has ropey production values by comparison, but it is laugh out loud in places. I enjoyed it, but it’s a heavily caveated recommendation, because I can imagine many wouldn’t. The Menu I’m not advocating anyone seeing as it’s well silly, if well done silly.
