I really loved "The English" it had a very 'SpagBol Western' vibe: largely British cast and filmed in Spain. Rafe Spall was outstanding and the leads (Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer) really carried the story along. On slight criticism was that there appeared a slight 'jump' in the story between eps 4-5 and 6: I can only only assume that the powers that be cut the number of episodes so that the story had to be 'sped up'.

I chuckled when I read the closing credits and discovered that the first cowboy film was made in
    Lancashire in 1907!

I think it was over saturation for me, same as Sarah Lancashire and Keeley Hawes. Same for Martin Compston too and the lady from Line of Duty.

I’ve just started watching Spooks from the very beggining, watched a few when I was younger but none of the early series.

Most of it has been excellent! So many “I can’t not watch the next episode” moments!

We did the same some years ago. We only got into it in about the third or fourth series and then went back and started from series one (this was in the days of DVDs). Really enjoyed it and it gave us the continuity of the changing characters in the cast.

Yes I’m also rewatching them all the way through, in fact just watched 2 episodes this evening. This series contains Richard Armitage who my wife was nuts about but hilariously later came out as gay. The first Mrs TuT was madly in love with Ricky Martin who coincidentally later came out as gay. “Dear Deidre, should I be concerned”.

    Dear TUT,
I understand your concern, I would suggest not going to watch the World Cup in Qatar

About 20 years after everyone else watched it, we've just discovered Breaking Bad. Absolutely brilliant and much better than watching the world cup

We watched it about a year ago - it's fantastic.

Currently starting the last series of Better Call Saul. It's also excellent, though it takes a long time to get going. Watched the first couple of episodes of series 1 and gave up, but thankfully went back to it a few months later.

Even though BCS is set before BB, you don't get to see the character until midway through the 2nd series and even then he's not a regular until series 3.

The first two series of BCS are very slow but they meticulously set out the story of Saul and it accelerates until it pretty much complete his pre-BB story.

If you’d never seen BB, I think 90% of people would give up BCS as a stand-alone programme as it’s so slow to start with. But, because of BB you have credit in the bank so you stick with it, and then after the first couple of seasons it starts to accelerate to the point I think it surpasses BB and ends up better.

Both tremendous and hard to separate on quality, but I’d say that BCS is slightly more nuanced and definitely more enjoyable. BB was superb, but grim and I have no plans to ever revisit it like I have The Wire or Homicide: Life on the Street.

For me it's simply a matter of scale. BB has a lot of grandiose plotlines, murders, explosions, etc. It's high octane.

BCS is a slow burner and very, very personal. The violent bits stick out more because they are far less frequent, and the Chuck/Jimmy relationship was depressingly relatable.

I find the personal nature of it far more engaging.

It is excellent - my favourite series ever, but don't let that put you off watching it Lloyd. Some fantastic supporting characters like Omar, and Snoop, who Stephen King said was the scariest female character on TV ever.

Also check out "The Corner" a short series, by the same team who made 'The Wire', that could be regarded as a proto-Wire. It uses a lot of the cast - although they're in very different roles.

I've really gotten into that new Netflix series "Wednesday" based on the Addams Family. Jenna Ortega' is quite a good actress and portrays her well. It's got real 1990's feel especially being produced by Tim Burton and the fact Christina Ricci also plays a re-occurring character. If you haven't seen it or are on the fence, give the pilot a try. It surprised me how dark it gets. Just been renewed for a second season too.
