Scorcese like all other great directors and right from his early shorts was a master of this. Brings you right into the scene walking alongside Henry and his beau. But by the backstairs not in the front. Great use of the music bed to set the atmosphere and the relationship between him and his fiancee.

Catching up on Stranger Things season 4. Crikey it's gone darker than the shoutbox during Hodgsons reign.

Yeah, I'm on episode 4, and wasn't expecting the levels of brutality. It's utterly captivating but I don't like full on horror, so have literally been watching certain parts through my fingers.

Before I started season 4, my 13 year old asked me if he could watch it and I said yes as it previously wasn't that bad. He then binged all 4 seasons over half term before I started season 4 and now regret saying yes. That said, he doesn't seem remotely bothered and laughed at me when I suggested he might be affected by it.

Didnt watch series 3 of stranger things. Whats the consensus? Watch it before 4 that sounds good or just wiki the plot and skip watching it.

Watch it, if you don't like it, stop watching it and read the synopsis, move on to 4.

4 is definitely a significantly darker tonal shift. 3 has been the weakest season overall although I still found it watchable, but YMMV.

Love Stranger Things and think Series 4 has been a cracker so far, albeit I agree it is the darkest season yet. Since the 15 yr old is in the midst of her GCSEs at the moment and therefore stuck at home most of the time she and I have gone back and started watching the whole of Stranger Things again from season 1. It’s even better watching it without any breaks between series. We’re currently at the end of Season 2…

And I felt just as bereft about Bob as I did the first time around :(

Season 3 is the weakest season imo but I agree with Diamond that you should still watch it and then go straight on to Season 4.

So what is the plot and appeal of Stranger Things?

I know nothing about it really other than I saw some kids from it on a chat show once and they were all really punchable. Not a rational reaction or reason to not watch it.

Like with most massively popular and successful shows I’m way behind the curve on watching it. I’ve only just started Ozark.

A love letter to the '80s classics that captivated a generation, 'Stranger Things' is set in 1983 Indiana, where a young boy vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.

My movie of the year so far…some of the storytelling is a bit rough but the visuals are fantastic. 4.5/5

New Jurassic World movie is pretty meh as a movie, but has some cool looking dinos. Body count far too low for the final film in the series, though.

Has some good moments, but overall nothing special and the only real reason to go is if you just like seeing big ol' dinosaurs going on a rampage.

I watched Hail, Caesar! at the weekend, a Coen brothers film from a couple of years ago that had passed me by.

I thought it was bloody brilliant, a really funny homage to the golden age of Hollywood. The main story is a farce involving the kidnap of a hammy movie star played by George Clooney, who in the film is starring in an epic Roman swords and sandals story.

The film follows Josh Brolin as a charming but gruff studio exec, trying to spin plates to keep flouncing directors, talentless but gorgeous movie stars and cynical gossip columnists on the level.

The highlight of the film is Channing Tatum playing a sailor in an inadvertently homoerotic WW2 musical.

It’s got an amazing cast who tie together a series of set piece sketches into something that feels like peak Mel Brookes.

It’s on Netflix, as is a lot of the Coen brothers’ work.

"Men". I really like the films of Alex Garland "EX_MACHINA", "Dredd" (he effectively directed it), "Annihilation" (possibly my favourite) and now "Men". A very small cast, dominated by Jessie Buckley (sadly not wearing her nurses outfit from "Fargo") and Rory Kinnear (proving what a great character actor he is), are used in Garland's exquisite cinematography to tell an old-fashioned English 'horror story' that explores our 'native' 'folk' images (I use quote marks as we still don't know who they are/were nor what they represent - they're possibly symbols of male and female re-birth hence their preponderance on early churches) of the Green Man and Sheela na gig. Genuinely eerie in parts and definitely one to watch on a rainy summer's evening but not with kids.

I watched "Resident Evil - Welcome to Raccoon City". It's better than the Milla Jovovich ones but that isn't saying much. Capcom gave them permission to use a lot for sources and this is what they did? Writing is awful, actors did the best they could do - Jill and Leon totally out of character. Don't waste your time.

Have to disagree on this one, watched it on your recommendation and despite the amazing cast I felt it was a massive let down and very disappointing, almost no point to it.

I've given in to the hype and started Season 1 of Stranger Things. Done 3 episodes, Winona Ryder is full on. I've been told to 'stick with it'.

I have this habit of watching shark movies, no matter how terrible. Watched the The Requin and dear God, is it bad. I couldn't even enjoy the shark bits because they were so poorly done.

A miserable experience, although you might derive some pleasure from mocking Alicia Silverstone's awful acting.

    Avoid.

S3 is the low point of the show but S4 more than makes up for it.

I think Coen Brothers films are marmite. My mate maintains that the only film he never finished was O Brother Where Art Thou and my wife hates the Big Lebowski.

Neither of these opinions compute for me. Both films I would watch as often as they are on.

Fargo and No Country For Old Men… Two perfect films in my opinion.

O Brother is a joy, apparently Clooney spent months taking singing lessons only to be dubbed in the edit.

I got half way through The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but my wife was huffing and puffing and hating it so much it had to be turned off. I think it was the amusingly overlong scene with the prospector that did for her.

There’s still a few notable ones I need to watch like Barton Fink and Inside Llewyn Davis.

See, Fargo, I didn't like at the time, but maybe it was when I didn't 'get' CB movies. I dare say if I went back and watched it now, I'd love it. TBL and OBWAT are just perfection for me.

NCFOM was very good, but I like the light humour of the other ones. It was a very good film, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the two I mentioned. My brother and I still quote OBWAT all the time. "I'm in a tight spot" and "I'm a Dapper Dan man."

So many excellent movies. Raising Arizona was also fab and The Big Lebowski is the one where they really let their (always evident) sense of humour shine through.
