What it says on the tin. Is the Prime Minister of the UK a liar?

Everyone knows he lied, there is zero doubt about that. The issue is whether people care or not.

But this time we have the specifics. Do you genuinely believe there is no principle worth upholding here?

Yes, they all lie to us to a degree....or at least try to mislead us when it suits them.

But they're not allowed to lie to each other in parliament. Under the ministerial code they are obligated to resign if they do. Well that's the way it's worked up until now.

This is why "partygate" shouldn't be dismissed as fluff and nonsense. Johnson and his government are eroding the conventions that, in the absence of a written constitution, are the foundations of our democracy.

Fair point, followed by political BS.

Blair destroyed the conventions over far more serious issues two decades ago, using the security services and the media, costing hundreds of thousands of lives, billions of pounds, and re-shaping the course of International politics. Your concluding paragraph is a parody. Whether it is born of ignorance or just plain gaslighting, who can tell.

Like with all politicians lying and misleading, let the voter decide. Unfortunately for the UK, at a general election, I still believe Boris would win with a sizeable majority. He is a complete dik, but is still far more palateable than the leader of a party obsessed with side show issues bordering on racism, a problem with anti-Semitism and about as much connection to the common man as Prince Andrew.

I posted something similar the other day and it really can't be overstated.

Our unwritten constitution depends on the enforcement of these conventions.

@iamofwfc you seem a bit confused about this one, liking posts that clearly indicate Johnson lied, but then voting that he did not.

Unless you say otherwise, I’ll just consider your vote an error in accordance with your like of #2.

    12-0 it is.

He will face a vote of MPs on Thursday as to whether he mislead the House.

I expect it will not go the same way as the one above.

  13. No but many went to war over it

They havnt even finished investigating all the parties yet, I wonder if he will go after the third or fourth fine? Any society worth living in would have dragged the fckers out of Downing Street and lynched them by now. They partied while people were dying alone and laughed about it afterwards.

Boris attempting to block a vote tomorrow (through his whips) on whether the PM knowingly misled parliament, until after the Sue Grey report has been released.

Whilst simultaneously arguing that enough time has passed and we should all move on.

You couldn’t make it up. Why on earth do you need to wait for the end of a police investigation/ a report to be released, to answer whether Boris has ever knowingly misled parliament?

    Spoiler: you don’t

There are some that keep hoping The Thick of It makes a return to our screens. In my opinion it already has with this absolute farce of a leadership team in place.

I think it was Ianucci who stated that real life has surpassed comedy, so satire no longer works.

In TTOI, the comedy was in the slippery ways the politicians and civil servants sought to avoid blame and almost got caught in a scandal that would impede their careers.

This government just tells you the sky is always red and tells you to get on with it. Where’s the comedy in that?

It should be no surprise that, despite everyone knowing Johnson is lying, support for him remains high.

Johnson won the Brexit vote on a false prospectus, was elected on the same, despite clear evidence of his previous poor character in both personal and public life. He has continued lying in office, whether about donations, renovations, hospital building, police and nursing numbers, Cummings lockdown breach, the NI protocol… etc etc.

    So what’s another lie?

Request for delay now withdrawn. Not sure whether this is because the govt feels it has the numbers, or if it threatened further mutiny in the Tory ranks.

  26. No way does it have the numbers. Scot Nats demanding a division, rather than being passed on the nod, so that anybody who votes against can be properly identified.

Brexit "hard man" Steve Baker calls on Johnson to quit.

According to Pippa Crerar, Tory MPs told they can go home by party whips. I think they are anxious to avoid a division as it would reveal the size of the Tory rebellion.

  29. Baker's speech absolutely killer. Said his spirit of forgiveness evaporated about 90 seconds into the 1922 Committee meeting. "An orgy of adulation and bombast". He said that Johnson's apparently genuine contrition lasted "about as long as it took to get out of the headmaster's study".

    He's dead.

I assume there will still be a division, but with a large number of Tory abstentions (because they have gone home for the weekend).
I think this is a very significant day. Johnson might regret not cancelling the trip to India

The speaker will not call for a division if he believes the shouted result is clear.

If there are not enough objections (e.g. most of the government benches are absent) then the motion may be carried without the need for a division vote.

I suspect that is what the Tory whips are hoping for now.

May be the opposition benches should shout both for and against!

But will Tory MPs actually vote? Or will they sneak off home, as to not upset their party/ members or their constituents?

We've finally seen a masterstroke by Starmer: it's the political version of chess's zugzwang when any move the Tories make will worsen their position. For example with vote the Tories have three choices:
    1. They can vote for the motion.
    2. They can vote against the motion.
    3. Or they can abstain.
    What happens in each scenario?
    1. Voting for it effectively ends de Pfeffel's political career and with his defenestration the entirety of that 'talent' who make up his team are gone as well. All of the projects (and scandals) he's/they've championed/defended are 'gone' also.
    2. De Pfeffel's finally shown that he is a liar with the apology to parliament and a vote against it (supporting de Pfeffel) shows them to be supporting a liar - not a good look.
    3. Showing that they are the ultimate cowards which the electorate won't forget.
De Pfeffel's history (it's just passed without a division).

Habitual liar. A complete narcissist. A chancer of the highest order. On top of all the journalistic and political lies he has told and been called out on, too numerous to list, is the substantial number of extra-marital affairs and illegitimate children he has been responsible for, which will have involved telling huge Porkies to his then nearest and dearest. What a total self-serving s-h-i-t he is. He brings shame to our country every waking hour.
