Quite but you know it won’t be .

Would he do that to a big name player?

They said in the build up to the England game that in the reverse fixture the ball was only in play for something like 33 minutes.

I would love to see an experiment game that worked like the NFL, two 30 minute halves but the clock stops as soon as the ball goes dead.

Time keeping should not be the domain of the match officials on the pitch

Rugby Union is the worst - play is live for not much more of 50% of matches in some games

No problem with it so long as they all apply to all teams in all games. Of course, that will never happen because refs are weak as piss and want to be best friends with star players

Time wasting is another man's "game management" .
Those that condemn Watford FC time wasting please remain standing .
All others please sit down .

I don’t get why in Rugby Union the clock sometimes stops and sometimes runs on with no play happening. But then again I don’t get Rugby Union.

If there was one thing that would vastly improve the viewing experience of football that is cutting out all cheating.

FIFA obssess about minor rule tweaks so they can be seen to be fulfilling their role as guardians of the game, but they do nothing about diving and timewasting

The players know that time wasting works only because the officials never add on the full amount at the end.

When it was down to the on field ref back in the day it was a bit arbitrary. That was one of the reasons for it to become a publicly known "recommended amount" from the 4th official who, in theory, would be able to keep a better record of it.

Now I think the 4th official spends much of the game with the managers in their ear and I don't think they track time wasting at all accurately.

Perhaps a dedicated "time official" who literally has a stop watch and can produce an accurate added time amount would be an idea.

Also the on pitch ref needs to add on time for time wasting in added time. This often gets missed.

Not sure if it would work but I bet 10 minute plus added times would not be uncommon initially at least!

It's still 100% down to the on field ref today. They just tell the 4th official what number to show.

I wish we had that ref for our last home game, the Newcastle goalie would have had an early Bath!

I guess if allowed the best thing to do might have been give the throw in to Switzerland or if they are time wasting at a corner for example give a goal kick ?

Great idea! This is what happens when the thrower persists in stealing yards, so why not for time wasting? It would end the practice of goalies taking an age over goal kicks if there was the threat of the award of a corner.

Just bring in an independent time keeper. Take that responsibility away from the referees. Any time there is a stoppage just stop the clock. Ditto for substitutions. After a while it would dawn on managers and players timewasting tactics would not work. It might put TV schedules out of joint for a while though.

Only if the ref actually deems it to be time wasting - which they dont

Well, they do when it eventually becomes excessive and persistent. Unfortunately by that time it’s the 89th minute and a yellow card makes no difference.

In rugby normally due to refs faffing around endlessly in scrums though rather than time wasting?
