If he was in a top team with better players around him he’d be looking like a £40m + winger. It’s easier for opponents to snuff him out as they have nothing else to really worry about. With Villa making that mistake in game 1 and it getting highlighted clubs can work on our weaknesses in training and put us to the sword on a match day. We also don’t seem to have any other plan right now going forward. Basically we’re ****ed.

Unfortunately our only consistently good left side attacking player since we first came up to the Prem under the Pozzos, apart from Richarlison for half a season. Both Dennis and Cucho (who needs to prove he's more than a showboater) need to step up their game so teams are more wary about doubling up on Sarr.

All he does is look up who was MOTM in every match and picks a team from that.

You can pretty much tell the game Sarr is going to have from his first run of the game.

If he gets the ball, drives at his man and beats him early doors, he’ll be a force throughout.

If he loses that first battle, it’s like he goes into his shell.

We already knew he was the best winger in the Championship, so yesterday was no surprise.

Needs to play with more confidence, but he’s got all the physical tools to terrorize almost anybody he faces. Hopefully a few more games like yesterday and it’ll properly click into gear for him. If he starts kicking on, I think he’s got the potential to almost singlehandedly keep us up.

There are some interesting titbits and insights into Ismaila and his idiosyncracies, or indeed lack of them, in the new Athletic piece on him out this morning - one of which is that he was already married with a child on the way when he signed in 2019 - I certainly had no idea about that; I'm not sure if it has ever come out as public knowledge before?

Overall the impression given is that he really does have his head screwed on as well as we concluded that he must have to have stayed and never caused any trouble, either this summer or last.

Obviously, it also takes the form of a bit of a puff-piece, but it's nice to hear how highly regarded he is skill-wise around the training ground, because it suggests he does still have higher gears to switch up into, as well as how he is apparently now coming out of his shell as a character:

I think he might be the quickest player I've ever seen y'know. Maybe Walcott in his early days. Just glides across the pitch and makes full backs with decent pace look like Carl ****inson. Would be interesting to see what time he'd get in 100/200m.

Agreed. What is even more upsetting is that we couldn't nudge Deulofeu back into the team. With him on the left, I feel like we'd have a fairly comfortable season scoring goals and dare I say it.. The strongest Watford forward line in recent years!?

Prime Deulofeu gets in our current team easily, but does that version exist anymore? Is present day Deulofeu better than Dennis/King/Cucho?

I can think of a few I reckon were potentially faster, but not many. He's definitely up there.

We've probably got more pace up front this season than at any time since Loofa & Digger. Whether or not that translates into enough goals remains to be seen, but pace is a good thing at this level anyway.

Don't think Dennis is quite as quick, but not too far behind.

Walcott as WT said, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo Nazario all come to mind.

Would it be crazy to suggest that he might not be an automatic pick from now on? Ranieri isn't called the Tinkerman for no reason!

I guess he will start next week as Dennis is banned but agree - everyone will need to perform and that includes Sarr.

Out wide he seems to make the right decision 9/10 times, but when he's moving towards the box centrally he seems to always pick the wrong option.

Part of the problem is he's absolutely pants at shooting, but still thinks he's always got a chance. The one in the first half yesterday with King up with him was criminal.

I still think he's got a long way to go in his footballing education, and I don't think being lumbered with having to carry our attack has done much good for him - sometimes the pressure seems to get to him.

Great attitude though, and I reckon he'd have been pleased to see the others come on and take up the mantle, rather than sulk he'd been dragged off.

You feel like Ranieri is the perfect manager for him at this stage in his career

Taking him off was a genius move both tactically and for the message it sends to him, as I said in the post-match thread yesterday, but even in acknowledging that, rewatching on MOTD last night reminded me that he created that pretty much perfect opportunity for King to get his second (the one that he fluffed straight at the keeper) by skinning his full-back and putting in a brilliant ball across goal.

It's this kind of impact that he must be having 5-10 times a game rather than one, and that kind of play that he has to be focusing on, and I definitely have a lot more hope of that being coached into him now than at any other point in his time here.

I feel sorry for JP, he's had a couple of bright cameos, in addition to a very encouraging first full season in English football, yet he's still going to find it hard to play regularly!

I don’t feel sorry for him. It’s refreshing to have genuine competition at least somewhere on the pitch and it’s good for us and him.

Claudio needs to sit him down one to one.

Show him how he plays for Senegal. Then show him what he is currently doing. Ask him why he does not do the same thing for both. And for Senegal he does work back. Why not for the club ? Granted Senegal are a pretty strong national side but that does not excuse the lack of energy, desire or the refusal to take on players. His crossing was poor again today although a couple of times the forwards should have got across the near post. He just hit it and hoped. If we are to have a chance of staying up he needs to pick up his game which he is quite capable of doing. If he does not then sell him to Human No Rights United for as much as possible and reinvest in the defence and midfield.

Pound for pound the worst signing in our club's history.

Nowhere near the player we must've been hoping for when we nearly bankrupted the club to sign him.

Needs a spell out of the team. Hopefully he won’t play with Dennis coming back from suspension.

Whether the hierarchy will be happy with their £40m investment forlornly sitting on the bench is another thing.

Got to say he was poor today. Going down far to easily, some poor crossing, poor decision making generally and not helping out much defensively

Thought Sarr should have gone off at half time with Pedro going out wide and Cleverley or Tufan coming into midfield

  31. PowerJugs

    PowerJugs Doyley Fanatic

It's why I would drop him to the bench. We cannot afford passengers who leave the full backs regularly exposed in a team that's already porous. Sema and Cleverley, although both are limited at least graft and helped stem the worst of Soton's chances. And you can't leave him up top to negate it as he cannot play the striker role at all in any form. Even if he was more direct and tried beating his man more, that would be acceptable but he's not even trying that.

Dennis seems just as quick as Sarr but he's a pain in the arse for defenders, has a nasty streak, has a bit of quality and he even wins headers despite not being that tall. I think he'll come into the team for Cucho but I'd happily start him over Sarr.
