Do you ever find yourself singing well isn’t it Ioniq? It’s like rayayaine on your wedding day…

Would consider it but on road parking for me so pretty much a non-starter. Maybe literally if some nightime hoodlum comes along and unplugs the car while tipping the bins over.

That is a problem for a big chunk of the population. You’d have to have a car with fast charging capability and a fast charge place nearby. But it’s going to be at least 30 minutes when filling the car was 5 minutes previously.

I’ve just ordered a mustang Mach E AWD.
I’m excited. A friend who is a mechanic has described it as a Ford Focus with a washing machine engine

I think we both have valid views And it’s a perfect fast mid life crisis car 0-60 5secs or so

Pretty sure electric will take over in the next 5 years

  6. Do you mean EVs or hybrids?

    32M cars in the UK
    ~300k of which are EV

In a good year UK buys ~2.something million cars

For EVs to take over by 2026 (call it >50% market share) they would have to sell 3M a year, currently its perhaps 40-50k?

They will get there eventually but my guess is between 2030 and 35

Currently considering flogging off the meistermobile. It's 2nd hand value apears to be very good at the moment and I have the oportunity to take over my father's old motor as a daily runabout shed which is worth more to me as a usuable car than it is in cash.

But nobody seems to make an interesting electric car about the size of a golf with nippy perfromance for sensible money. I wouldn't touch VW mind, given my history with them.
Looking at alternatives when you start to spec up something reasonably nice, it's north of £30-35K. I'm thinking Honda E, Mini E etc. The Peugeot/Corsa E is about the most interesting I can see but not quite big enough to shift the parents/golfclubs about and at 8 sec 0-60pmh I think I'd be dissatisfied.

So I thought about keeping the shed and getting somethign a little more interesting on the 2nd hand market. Sporty petrol cars are not long for this earth so it might be my last chance. Thinking Toyota MR2 or something of that ilk.

I am reliably informed that the 2nd hand market is rising fast and will continue to do so mainly due to a shortage of new cars right now.

Maybe I'll hold off for a bit. The Meistermobile is 5 years old now and market vlaue is 70% odd what I paid for it new, which is bloody good.

Electric motors and batteries are heavy so many electric cars are big so that weight is less of the whole or very small city cars, with restricted range. The Cupra Born may appeal to you when it comes out in a few months. Golf sized and not as horrifically frumpy as an ID3. If your pockets are deep how about an Ioniq 5?

Why is it though all electric cars need to look like Hot Wheels designs?

Everyone can pay top whack before the Government really clamps down on them in order to make us drive electric.

Pockets very much shallow as I'm now semi retired.
I do like the Ioniq's looks but there' one down the road from me and it's actually massive.
Will check out the Cupra but it still has the VAG stink attached to it and seing as I threatened to sue them I'm less keen to go back.

The Cupra does look bloody nice. little in the way of specs and pricing at the moment. Caw Wow suggests entry level starting at £33K though and as it's not going to be here until next year I expect that with a few extras to be nudging £40K.

Yep, a definite big premium on electric cars right now. It’s a nice looking car, but still it’s just a hatchback.

As most electricity in the UK is produced from gas fired power stations, electricity prices are likely to go up significantly over the next five years. And gas produced electricity is a madness when they want to phase out a more energy efficient use of the gas in domestic heating boilers.

A trend on electricity prices is unlikely to slow unless renewables make another huge leap or someone grasps the nettle and we build a network of small modular nuclear power plants. I think i will stick to my low CO2 diesel. Its more energy efficient and less polluting than petrol equivalents, or a hybrid. In comparison overall running costs make an Electric or Hybrid an expensive choice, and both today have marginal benefits to the environment.

I would go for an Internal Combustion engined vehicle if i was to buy one tomorrow. Ten years time i might not have the choice, but until then i would not go electric. Hopefully green hydrogen vehicles will be a realistic option.

Electric cars - i would look at Kia e-Niro and Soul EV are reasonable, 7 year (100,000 mile) warranty and a range of about 275 miles on a full charge.

Yes, it's benefitting from the chip shortage at both ends.

Firstly, a shortage of new vehicles due to insufficient chips to build at full rate means higher demand for used vehicles.

Secondly, cars that usually wouldn't have much resale value can be bought and stripped down for chips (and other parts), so even really old cars are getting some decent resale at the moment.

We just had to get my wife a new car since her 2008 was burning oil and her mechanic told her it was just a matter of time before the engine blew. Lots of dealers selling over MSRP due to the shortage (scumbags). We found one that wasn't doing this and even got 400 off, so not feeling too bad about that at all.

Just out of interest what do people think will happen to classic cars?

As it stands cars over 40 years are classed as ‘Historic’ and exempt from road tax and the ULEZ, so anything registered before 1981 currently. So anything 40 years old you can drive round London for nothing, no tax to pay, but just the obvious extra cost on fuel compared to a modern car.

My guess is that things like ULEZ equivalents will gradually get expanded out to more and more areas as we get closer to 2030, so that alone will make owning a non electric, non historic car more and more prohibitive as we get closer to it, not to mention the price of fuel which will get more and more expensive and harder to find.

But assuming the current rules regarding historic vehicles remain broadly similar, hopefully if you own a classic car that is 40 years older or more when we got 2030, then it shouldn’t be too prohibitive to keep it/carry on using it, so any car older than 1990 should hopefully be ok indefinitely beyond 2030.

Everything else in the middle will of course get more and more unviable to keep using beyond 2030.

This is just out of interest on the basis that so many classic, but ultimately fairly normal cars have gone completely stratospheric over the past few years. Will that carry on? Will they dip and then actually get even more valuable if people can afford to hold on to them beyond 2030 and see what happens once the dust settles?

The other scenario of course, is that hopefully converting a car to electric will get significantly cheaper by 2030.

It’s mental, I’m coming to the end of a PCP on a Golf so I went to the dealership to talk through my options. It’s four years old, done nearly 50k miles and somehow it’s worth three grand more than it was last year so they’re having it back! The equity is now a deposit on a brand new really nice spec T-Roc that they were absolutely gagging to knock money off. The manager of the branch even came over and started sticking on service plans and all sorts gratis so the salesman would get a nice kickback.

Bizarre. I won’t pretend to understand it but I like it.

  27. Luckily my PHEV can do 40 miles on the battery, and because it seldom goes further than this in one go, it is showing 560 miles range on the full fuel tank.

The media are ******* imbeciles though. They whip up this nonsense and then feed off the photos of the chaos they've caused. Plus, that Leeds Sainsburys just looks like a normal petrol station queue to me.

That Mustang would probably get beaten by a Ford Focus in a drag race now, great clip though.

San Francisco ought to produce great cyclists with those climbs.

I’ve only got 9/10ths of a tank and do about 10 miles a week. Better top it up though. Better safe than sorry.
