Yep and next weekend. We've a tough couple of months coming up.

Some of my favourite seasons were winning a relegation battle and enjoyed them equally as much as promotion. Being utterly ***** all season and then winning six and drawing two of the last ten games to survive (like in 93/94) was brilliant fun.

We've never actually won a relegation battle in the Premier League, every year we've either been almost safe by Easter or gone down. Pretty sure we're going to be in one this season, so let's hope we can buck the trend!

How much of those seasons did you actually enjoy?

Yes, that's a very good point. I admire any coach who goes to another country and learns other languages. But as supporters we do lose some sense of connection with the coach and their ideas because of the language barrier. I am not for a moment blaming the coaches but the Thursday press conferences and pre- and post-match conferences are an artificial construct as it is. In an ideal world, the clubs would allow journalists who are fluent in the coach's language regular access so we could hear and read their thoughts without them being watered down to the point of meaningless by the 'in these moments' filter.

The media has changed, of course. Back in the day we were spoiled with the Watford Observer transcribing the manager's thoughts every week, often running to thousands of words. Local media is not strong or relevant enough for that these days. National media will only turn the spotlight on the likes of Watford a handful of times per season and so we are left with club-produced media. Some of that is very good and offers some insight but it is PR and, at best, it is controlled scrutiny and so in difficult times, or when tricky questions need to be asked, it's unlikely to yield anything worthwhile.

All head coaches are temporary but I think my indifference towards them and their fate is as much to do with the fact we rarely hear what they really think in any great detail.

No way Burnley go down, and no way Brighton are in trouble. Everything else is pretty agreeable though

I don’t see why Burnley aren’t likely to go down, they were the worst team to stay up last season, have only one point from a not very tough start, have thrown away leads in three games, haven’t won at home in 12 matches, and like last season they are struggling for goals and aren’t particularly good defensively. If that doesn’t point out to a relegation candidate, I don’t know what does.

People like to say it’s the Dyche factor that will keep them up, but I imagine some said the same about Howe and Bournemouth, and he eventually took them down.

Well, Dyche is a better manager than Howe, and has taken Burnley to better heights than Howe did with Bournemouth for a start, additionally, Burnley were 17th, but were comfortably better than Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United, and there's little evidence to suggest that us, Norwich or Brentford much if any better than those three, let alone taking into account the likes of Newcastle are grim

    Brentford 1 up.

    Toney penalty.

Silly from the Wolves player pulling him back.

    EDIT: Almost 2.

    Goal ruled out for handball.

    EDIT X2: It is now.

Brentford making light work of Wolves at their own ground and they outplayed us at ours, make of that what you will.

We made them look like that for 10 minutes or so last week then for some reason decided to basically give up attacking.

To he fair that's football it is what it is we battered Villa, Brentford played them in the next round of fixtures and never.

Brentford have basically not changed their approach at all from the Champ yet have been looking decent at this level - it further underlines that the more passive/conservative approach we seem to have adopted in recent games (as highlighted in the Athletic article) has been a mistake.

Villa are very much working their way into things in the first few games tbf, they looked way off the pace against us

Brenford will be the Sheff Utd of this season. They will finish well (probably not as high as SU did int their initial season) but it remains to be seen if they spend wisely. Of course they could still go on a terrible run and get
relegated of course, but nobody can deny they, on the whole, have made a great start to their season.

So, literally a second week in a row of very average teams considered to be in or around our position exposing just how there-for-the-taking our previous opponents were the very next game after we have meekly shyt the bed against them :)

Yeah, I admit I was guilty of bigging them up but that was based on how many shots they’d had against top seven opponents and what their own fans have been saying (and they’re hardly going to be the most impartial) rather than what I’ve seen with my own eyes, our game against them apart. Maybe they’re like what they were in the 2018/19 season - play well against the top sides, not so well against the lesser ones? Only this time they’re not getting results against the top teams, so they could be in trouble.

Tbh even last week we had to score for them to get a goal !

Brentford took their chances then held out very well despite losing a man.

Almost as if they have been in the league for ages .

The end bits! But that's kind of my point - when you can't realistically win trophies, football is about moments that mean something. Promotion or escaping relegation right at the death give you a massive high. Ambling around in mid table feels kind of pointless, even if you win more games over the course of the season. I would rather be bottom, go on a crazy run and end up 17th on the last game of the season than be 11-13th all season.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, but outside of individual results against big teams, all of our 'survival' seasons in the Prem have felt unfulfilling, it would have felt a lot better had we done it the other way around like what Wigan seemed to do in the past, start off badly and then do a Great Escape
