Because... "In years gone by, clubs were able to sign free agents at any point, but clubs under orders to submit their 25-man squads, this is no longer permitted." The PL squad deadline hasn't passed yet.
That's only because players can still leave. It doesn't mean we're allowed to add players to the provisional list we've already submitted
No PL squads have been submitted yet - there is no 'provisional list'. The league released a list of squad numbers earlier in the week and some news outlets (including the Wobby, which deleted its article soon after) jumped to the conclusion those were the squads. Maybe that's the confusion? Under FIFA rules, free agents aren't bound by transfers windows. That hasn't changed - they can sign for a club and be registered by the country's FA immediately. But PL rules would stop them playing in the league until January.
What about loans though? Why does nobody mention this? We need to know if Gino can make loan signings.
This was my point. I'm sure we can sign whoever we like, but we won't be able to add them to our squad until January. Nath was suggesting we are still able to add free transfers to the squad, which we can't
Surely the gap between the window closing and the naming of the 25 man squads is a grey area, which in theory should allow the signing of free agent players as they could still be added to the 25 man squad before the deadline for submitting it arrives? Just speculating.
Unless... Not sure if the rules have changed, but you did impress me with this bit of info, because you were spot on, when talking about Evra signing for West Ham as a free agent after their 25 man squad had been named end of January. I would have thought that signing a player before the squad is named would be an even more compelling argument to allow them into the squad. Evra signed for West Ham on 7 Feb, a week after the squad had been registered and a match had already been played, he was added to the squad and played 5 games.
Well, I was going to add a bit about 'subject to the PL board deciding otherwise, cos it's their competition', but didn't want to over complicate things.
Officially left out of the squad. I’d still have picked him over Zeegelaar as at least Kaboul has a bit of talent and we are now well stocked with players able to play at LB before you’d consider Marvin. Now is not the time to criticise anything within the club - but just imagine taking Zeegelaar out and adding a summer signing that will actually contribute. It’s strange that the club have left themselves in the situation of having a player in the 25 that we know they have zero intention of playing again.
Baring a ridiculous injury crisis, they probably feel 27 players is enough to see us through till January, and then perhaps make changes then
I thought that was the case with Kaboul rather than Zeegelaar. Javi was saying during the transfer window that Kaboul was fit but not training with the team, and seemed to be indicating that he was looking elsewhere to continue his career. I don't remember anything like that being said about Zeegelaar. I would be happy for Zeegelaar to cover if it came to it. Not the best, but did seem reasonably competant.
Bit of a shame IMO, I know we haven't seen him for a year, but on the form he showed when he last played, he'd probably be first in line to fill in if we get an injury
When he first came into the team he did quite well and people were asking why Sliva hadn't been playing him!
There was when he was introduced to the fans at half time during a match. I remember him coming on with Pereyra. How contrasting their Watford careers have been.
Kaboul was actually a good player, but unfortunately injuries have got the better of him. Thankyou for your service Younes and good luck for the future.
I don't agree. He has cost us a fortune - he should thank us for paying him while not fit for purpose. I remember the Wobby telling us he was "back in full training" in December 2017 Utterly useless.
Wasn’t it before Chelsea or @rsenal a couple of seasons ago? I remember thinking I’d heard of Kaboul.
What I'll remember of Kaboul's time here are his occasional marauding runs down the right wing, from centre back, when chasing a game. Quite a sight. Completely ineffective, of course.
Shame. I was hoping for a teaser video in Jan, before the club unveiled a 7 year contract on improved terms
