So I started 17/18 badly, then found some consistency, had a storming December and with 10 games to go I was in the Europe League spots. An absolute implosion in the last 6 games pushed me down to 11th. A disappointing end to a successful season overall.

This sseason so far though is a different story! After 10 games I'm sitting in 1st place! Granted, I've not played any of 'The Big 6' yet, but you can only beat what's infront of you. My success has simply come from a good old-fashioned 4-4-2, Peñaranda and Gray upfront and currently firing on all cylinders. It's actually criminal how Gray hasn't received a call up to the England squad yet, considering how well he's doing. England got knocked out of the WC in the group stages though, yet Southgate still kept his job..

    Anyway, see the screenshots below.

The Adventures into Management of Heidar Helguson Pt.1

So I recently started a new career mode game as our very own Icelandic Icon Heidar. I tried to set up the character to be as close to what Heidi was in terms of international experience and club coaching level. I then allowed the game to sim for an entire season before starting to look for jobs in May 2018. I have leagues loaded in England, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

I was pretty determined to try and manage away from England initially, and had a couple of job interviews with Kaiserslautern and Frankfurt. Palermo in the Serie B were also quite interested. What really surprised me was when I got offers to apply for the job at recently relegated Leicester. A few weeks later, and after some very persuasive interviewing (and a generous contract offer), I ditched my European ambitions and rocked up at Leicester in the Championship on a two year contract with minimum expectations of winning the championship in my first year.

When you really get down to looking at the nuts and bolts of their squad its not difficult to see why. It is absolutely packed full of talented and experienced premier league players. Unfortunately the one thing the board might have overlooked is that absolutely none of them wanted to play in the championship. That's right, on the first day I rocked up to the club no less than 21 players wanted to leave Leicester. The two content first team squad members were two reserve goalkeepers, neither of whom filled me with confidence.

So I was forced into a bit of a firesale once the new transfer window opened:
    - Jamie Vardy (the useless malcontent who had scored a magnificent 2 goals in Leicester's last season) WEST BROM £19.5m
    - Shinji Okazaki (I have a soft spot for him but he is aging now) BRIGHTON £7m rising to £8.25m
    - Simon Bentham (a youth player who the board sold from under my feet) MAN CITY £2m rising to £5.25m
    - Adrien Silva (too good for the championship) AS MONACO £45m
    - Kasper Schmeichel (already had a transfer agreed) CSKA MOSCOW £5m
    - Riyad Mahrez (really didn't want to stay in the championship, threw his toys out of the pram when I suggested he owes the club some loyalty and demanded to be transfer listed) REAL MADRID £44m rising to £48.5m
    - Wes Morgan (even club captain and favourite Big Wes demanded to leave) BRIGHTON £1.1m rising to £1.4m
    - Leonardo Ulloa (although his talents would have been suited to my eventual formation, he was having none of it) AS SAINT-ETIENNE £5.5m
    - Ben Hamer (one of my useless reserve keepers, desperate to stay but had to go) SHEFFIELD UTD £450k
    - Ben Chilwell (Leicester born and bred, but **** that championship football, I'm out) MIDDLESBOROUGH £18.25m rising to £28.5m
    - Yohan Benalouene (one of my better centre backs) SPARTAK MOSCOW £250k
    - Eldin Jakupovic (my other useless reserve keeper) BASEL £195k

All in all shipping out these 12 players, along with the budget the board had given me gave me a significant warchest. The problem was finding appropriate replacements who were keen to sign up. My remaining squad consisted of:
    0 Goalkeepers
3 Full Backs (Fuchs, Simpson and Elder, Amartey)
    1 Centre Back (Maguire)
5 Centre Mids (James, King, Iborra, Ndidi, Kovalenko, Mendy)
3 Wingers (Musa, Gray and Albrighton)
    1 Striker (Iheanacho, Slimani)

Mendy and Amartey were not good enough, so I loaned them out too. Harry Maguire wanted to leave but I offered him a new bumper contract with a higher division release clause and made him club captain for the season. Ndidi absolutely despises me now, but I told him I couldn't afford to sell him. Iborra seems happy enough to give us one season to go up.

I only managed to bring in five replacements before the start of the season:
    - Ryan Sessegnon £16m from Fulham. This well known young left winger is always worth picking up. His pace and finishing should work well in my high pressing 4-2-3-1 as an inside forward.
    - Nick Pope £4.1m from Burnley. This Burnley keeper is pretty solid and had no hesitation stepping down to the championship.
    - Tom Cairney £10.5m from Fulham. I probably overpaid for him, but all in all he should fit in well as an attacking midfielder in abundance. He has tons of talent, but has the habit of going missing.
    - Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan from Chelsea. A season long loan to come in and play in the attacking midfield position or slightly deeper. A no brainer.
    - Daniel Bachmann £625k from Watford. Our very own reserve keeper, who I signed just in case Pope gets injured. Looking at his handling stats he should not expect to start in anything other than the cup.

Ironically my first 11 at this point looked pretty damn good on paper:
    Pope
    Simpson Maguire Iborra Fuchs
    Ndidi James
    Gray RLC Musa
    Iheanacho

Subs - Bachmann, Slimani, Albrighton, Sessegnon, Kovalenko, Cairney, James

However any injuries to any of these players would leave me pretty severely depleted. We started the season really well and won the first seven games of the season with the goals just flying in. I also bought in some extra players to bulk out my weak areas:
    - John Flanagan £4.3m from Liverpool, to provide competition for the aging Danny Simpson.
    - Joe Worrall £10m from Notts Forest. I vastly overpaid, but this young centre back reminds me of Harry Maguire.
    - Mario Pasalic £9.25m from Chelsea. A young midfielder with good technical skills but not sure he has the mental skills yet to play in the Premier League.
    - Nicholas Schiappacasse £3m from A.Madrid. A young Uruguayan striker with lots of potential, came in as cover.
    - Emiliano Velazquez £550k from A.Madrid. A 24 year old centre back in the last year of his contract. Reminds me a bit of Angella.

In October and November I dropped points in 5 games losing just one. A ridiculous December in which I have won 6 games on the bounce brings me to January top of the league and clear by 6 points over a resurgent Sunderland inspired by manager Kenny Jackett. I will post the second half of the season in due course. What will happen with Ndidi in the January transfer window is the question on all Leicester fans lips.

The Adventures Into Management of Heidar Helguson Pt.2

If your were not an avid reader of the first post then let me quickly bring you up to speed. I took the job at recently relegated Leicester City, and had to deal with an ongoing player revolt that saw no less than 12 players sold. This did give me a fairly sizeable warchest, but unfortunately a severe lack in players. Displaying Everton-like aptitude for overspending I brought in a succession of young players from underachieving championship clubs like Fulham and Forest, and playing a system that could be likened Klopps gegenpress but on steroids set about demolishing teams. The start of the January transfer window found me second in the league, 6 points clear of a Sunderland team on a charge led by club captain Didier N'dong. Yes, you read that right.

Of course the FA Cup starts in earnest in January, and with a squad that had been putting 3 or 4 goals past nearly any keeper in the championship I fancied our chances against most opposition in the tournament. You can imagine how disappointed I was when a strong Leicester team got turned over by QPR at the King Power in the 3rd round. The source of my poor performance seemed to be a public falling out with Wilfried Ndidi, whom didn't take to well to me declining to sell him to Manchester City. A dressing room row, where I threw a boot across the room at him, obviously upset some of the players and Ndidi went one step further against QPR by getting himself sent off only 5 minutes after coming on as a substitute. He didn't take being disciplined well either, and so I thought I would give him a couple of weeks off.

My form suffered a bit as a result and I struggled to a narrow 2-0 win against QPR the week after before drawing 0-0 with then bottom of the league Preston. Deciding that something needed to be done to get out of my funk I blooded recent signing Carles Alena (£10 from Barcelona) and decided Ndidi could do one. Although his work rate would be hard to replace, his poor attitude in recent months had been getting on nerves. Still there was no bloody way I was letting him go to Manchester City so I instead flogged him to Hoffenheim. Enjoy the bratwurst Wilfried!

I also loaned out Mario Pasalic, the youngster I had acquired expensively from Chelsea in the summer. He has done nothing to convince me he is worthy of displacing either Matty James or Vincent Iborra from my midfield, and he probably needs some games elsewhere before reassessing at the end of the season. I also loaned out Mendy, and brought in my compatriot the brilliantly named Axel Andresson (20yr old Reading CB) and Achraf (19yr old Real Madrid WB).

Without the FA Cup or that ingrate Ndidi to distract my team we continued our demolition of the championship. From the start of February until the end of March in 11 games we won 9 times, scoring a handsome 28 goals. Meanwhile Hoffenheim lost 6 on the bounce and entered a relegation battle...

With 8 games to go the league was all wrapped up and 5 games from the end of the season the title was secured. Throughout the season my team scored an astonishing 124 goals (setting a new championship record), gained 115 points (setting a new championship record) and won 36 games (setting a...well you get the point). Sunderland clung onto second place beating Fulham into third place with a phenomenal last minute winner in the final game of the season at Craven Cottage. Didier Ndong was held aloft on Sunderland fans shoulders as they paraded through the streets. Fulham and Jokanovic pummeled Wolves in the championship final and secured a deserved spot in the top league next year. Forest, Oxford and Sheffield Utd were relegated with Preston finishing 16th having been rock bottom at Christmas.

Amongst my players its fair to say the forward line had an exceptional year:
Iheanacho 28 goals in 43 games
Gray 22 goals in 43 games
Musa 21 goals in 40 games
As far as a front three goes, they were pretty phenomenal. The midfield also delivered, and strong performances throughout the year from the likes of Matty James, Vincent Iborra and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in particular meant that the top three could focus on what they were good at. Harry Maguire led the defence well, whilst the exceptional Ryan Sessegnon not only scored 15 goals but played over half his games at left back.

So the first season of Heidar Helgusons fledgling managerial career was a staggering success, although it seems most of the Leicester fans expected as much. Spare a thought for poor old Ndidi as Hoffenheim were relegated in the last game of the season.

    Auf wiedershen!

I find the idea of Iheanacho, Gray and Musa bagging a combined total of 71 goals for Leicester in a season, regardless of the league, absolutely ******* hilarious.

Still playing FM09 here, started with AFC Wimbledon and gave myself a billion pounds, got the the Prem rom Southern Conference missing promotion only once on the ay. Left them in 2021 and joined WFC who were in League one at the time. Didnt cheat with WFC and currently it is 2038 and I am top of the Prem looking to bag my 7th title in a row. Have won everything in this game apart from the Championship title. Im coming up to 88 days playing time and my save file has been transferred around 4 pcs I think. Luton went down as low as the Southern Conference at one point, I think they are in the National Conference now.

Just did the treble with Rangers on FM19. Trying to get the reputation of the Scottish leagues up. Almost got out my Champions League group as well, but missed out due to the complicated way they divide teams when on level points. Us , Porto and Lazio were all on 10. Beat Lazio 7-1 as well! Goals galore in FM19.

Watford are massively overpowered in FM19. Won everything with Wilmot, Masina, Doucoure, Chalobah, Deulofeu, Pereyra and the outrageously good Cucho Hernandez in the champions league final XI. Sancho returned for 50m.

I left them in the capable hands of Antonio Conte and went off to build a revolution at Hoffenheim.

Three biggest recommendations? Gegenpress, only signing players that match the squad personality, and inside forwards.

I started playing again recently, after a couple of years away. It’s only possible because I got a new job that gives me loads of time off and I needed something to fill the time when wife/kids are at work. You’re right, it’s like a full-time job in itself.

Downloaded CM01/02 last night. For me, possibly the pinnacle of the entire series. Masterful in its playability and simplicity.

I hadn’t played it much since FM16, loaded up 19 just before Christmas, selected Doncaster as for some reason I only start games in League 1 and got going.....

Then I saw the colour coded training schedules, the detailed social hierarchy at the club and was invited to attend a meeting about chuffing scouting budgets. Haven’t looked at it since.

I used to love to it so much, I’d have entire weeks when me and a couple of mates would ignore uni and just make a Football Manager office in one of our bedrooms. We made wall charts, had notebooks full of demented scrawlings.... we even I’m ashamed to say held post match interviews with each other, where the manager would stand in the corner of the room and give two minutes of noncommittal cliches. I miss being 20, having zero responsibilities and spending sunny days indoors with some equally pathetic nerds playing a sport themed version of D&D.

I just don’t have the patience for it now, if only I did because it’s such a rewarding way to spend time.

I released an update last summer - "a 10 years on" from when I last blogged about it (no need to read the previous updates, I provide a summary of what I was trying to achieve)

Just read through your whole series while at work. Well, over a couple of days. Legendary stuff, mate.

Started my own Rushden save on CM01/02 after being inspired by that blog posted by Aber. Built a team of Scandinavian and Super-Greek destroyers. Legendary hit man Anastasios Skalidis hit 78 goals during the course of our Division 1 title-winning season that also saw us fail to win successive FA Cups with a penalty defeat at Wembley against Fulham.

    Ridiculous game, but insanely playable.
