Proposing this thread for doing exactly what it says on the tin. Admin can feel free to strip out any ramblings related to the last century cropping up in other threads and replant them here. What rules shall we have to keep the thread pure? I'll start with a few: - No talk of the Premier League - All posts must apply rose tinted spectacles - Vague recollections welcome - Pictures and videos even more welcome

Who was better - Alan Mayes or Keith Mercer ? Bear in mind I only started watching in 1977 but; Mercer looked a goalscoring beast whose bravery ultimately cut short his career. Could have been a real fixture for us for years and maybe we'd never have discovered Luther ? Mayes seemed to always be an enigma. Seemed to be 2 steps ahead of his teammates who didn't have the vision to spot his runs, read his flicks etc ? Was he too good for them ? Was he better wide or more central ? Never really realised his potential with us but went on to be really successful at Swindon and Chelsea. I was a great fan of both and found it sad when both moved on never having really made it at Watford for differing reasons.
I refer the learned gentleman to my reply on the New Kits thread....."You should know by now that us older folk like repeating ourselves"
I remember Alan Mayes and Tony Geidmintis being sent off in the first half in a game against Huddersfield. We then scored two goals in the second half with nine men. I remember Mike Keen was the manager then but I can't remember exactly when it was or who got our goals. Can anyone help?
Yes.. 16 Apr 1977. Keith Mercer grabbed both goals. A game that has gone down in wfc folklore. Ironic that Deeney was also sent off home to Huddersfield.
I think they were great together but Mercer gets my vote. Mike Keen was apparently sacked BEFORE the Hudders game. Can I start a "Ive been to Workington" section.
Different types of players - Mercer was akin to a lower division (!) Deeney and Mayes to a 70s Fessi. Chalk and Cheese - oh, sorry....
Actually we beat Southport 2-0. Youre thinking of Taylor's first home league game the following season. So who was in charge of team matters for the remaining 6 games after Keen got the boot?
My first Watford game was at the end of the 1962/63 season. We were playing Millwall at home and it's the only time I csn remember Watford playing in all gold strip. Bunny Larkin missed a penalty and Millwall won 2-0. I was so impressed by Bunny Larkin's ineptitude thst I took his name for this forum. The next season we hsd Bill McGarry as manager, Pat Jennings in goal, Dennis Bond in midfield and Charlie Livesey up front. - we finished third behind Coventry and Crystal Palace.
Keith Cassells a better natural goal scorer than either. Used to rave about him to my dad as I watched every home Wednesday night combination game, which you could get into the main stand with your child Vicarage Road season ticket.
