Hopefully we will be 4 goals up after about 60 minutes so that we can give some of the fringe players a chance

Janmaat more likely midfield and Cathcart rb.

I think 352 has fluidity to it that can either look silly or destroy teams.

Wide midfield 3, narrow front 3? Still not sure who is supposed to be the third striker. And that would imply Holebas was deployed more defensively but he still got forward plenty (see his goal!).

Your point about fluidity is correct though. Maybe if you froze the match at certain moments it would look like a 433, 343, a 442 or whatever, but on average, the default was 352.

p.s. I apologise to the forum if the way I'm posting seems confrontational - I don't mean it to be.

Well I don't take it that way.

It was clearly 532 that changed to 352 then back to 532.

Glad that this game is at 4 in the morning so I have an excuse not to watch it. While I appreciate the sudden flood of optimism following the West Ham upset, we're going to get thrashed by a team that is the incarnation of everything wrong football. They've got so many glory-hunting, arbitrarily attached fans in places like the US and Canada that their transfer budget is larger than the GDP of East Timor. 3-0 to the Red Devils and and a barrage of media articles kissing 53-year old Portugese a*se while condescendingly noting that Watford was there, and it's cute that they tried.

Simple mash , you are making a complete bell of yourself here .

Ignoring the fact that anyone watching the game could see that Cathcart dropped to RB and Ighslo was playing on the left whilst Janmast switched between RW and RM, let's go with the fact that TD mentioned the formation change in 2 different interviews clearly stating that we switched to 4 at the back , and Mazzarri also spoke about it too .

But clearly you know more than the captain and our manager about what formation we played .

Whatever the formation, let's hope we win! Surely we can all agree on that fellow hornets!

No need to resort to this my friend.

I believe that while Janmaat may have got forward plenty and Ighalo may have drifted left to target Byram, we largely stuck to same system that Mazzarri has used throughout his time with us, bar 45 minutes against Arsenal.
If others disagree, which they clearly do, fine. I'm not going to comment again after this. I was contributing my opinion on what I saw to the forum but it seems like that isn't tolerable.

The reality is that this wasn't a game of table football. They aren't stuck rigidly the same distance from each other in a premeditated shape and as Hornpete said, there is plenty of flexibility, which I think leaves it very much open to interpretation.

Mazzarri was overheard in a restaurant saying "quattro formaggi", quattro means 4, formaggi means formation - ergo it was 433.

Unfortunately we will get torn a new one here. However, it's the end of the "start from hell" in which we've chalked up more points than I anticipated. So let's get this one over with, and concentrate on beating the sides who are likely to be in the bottom half with us. I hate Man United and when they come to town it's a **** day full stop.

I don't think we're going to get battered (as long as we don't turn up as the team from the first half against Arsenal and first 35 or so minutes against West Ham, otherwise we'll get completely torn to shreds) but I do think that Man Utd will have too much for us, unfortunately.

Im expecting a respectable performance and result - 2-1 Man Utd. Onwards and upwards after that hopefully with a run of much kinder fixtures.

Mr Moog, I one day hope you will stop trying to be so patronisingly controversial.

I know you only do it to get an argument going and u r fishing for bites to satisfy your perverted and warped sense of humour, but I feel I have to protest at posts like this which is just too outlandish and so way over the top it's like a form of extremism that has no place here ... it's only a Watford fans forum ffs ..

Don't think we'll get torn to shreds in the way it might potentially happen against Arsenal, City or even Spurs. It's pragmatic Mourinho and they have two slow football pensioners up front. I think this will be more like the Chelsea game and it will be close.

  14. I love a back 3 that can seamlessly morph into a 4 or a 5

The prem Wigan side used to do it quite brilliantly

I hope that's what Wally is trying to create

It's tough to predict Watford right now. If we play with a 3 at the back we get overrun, if we play with a 4 we look commanding and inventive.

United are too good to mess about against. We got away with it on Saturday, but if we go a couple of goals down again before changing the system, it will probably too much for us to overturn the result.

4-3-3 looks to be our naturally strongest formation, so I hope Mazzarri starts with that, in order to give us a bit of a chance.

It will be one of those games we're all too familiar with. Do really well for 90 minutes, then watch it fall apart in the 10 minutes added on.

I will bow to your superior knowledge on the matter, as will Deeney and Mazzarri as they clearly disagree as well.

Hopefully Berghuis can nobble a few Utd players when they play on Thursday .

With his footballing hard man reputation Id like to see him to do a Keane-on-Haaland style kneecap job on Zlatan.

Would love to take the special one and zillions of worldwide plastic fans down a peg or two with a comprehensive win.

But we'll play a good game, go one up and concede in the last 10 ..

1-1 a good result just taking Mourinho down one peg

After football manager was so accurate with it's 0-0 prediction of last weekend it would be criminal not to hear it's verdict again.

Watford starting lineup: Gomes, Cathcart, Prodl, Kaboul, Janmaat, Kenedy, Pereyra, Watson, Capoue, Deeney, Success

The golden boys got off to a flying start in this encounter, keep possession well and playing their way through Man United's forward-thinking midfield. In the opening minutes Troy Deeney found space in the box at the end of a fine passing move but dragged his shot wide when he should have opened the scoring. Watford didn't have to wait long to break the deadlock however, as 9 minutes in Isaac Success was on hand to tap in the rebound for his first goal in English football after De Gea spilled Ben Watson's speculative effort from 20 yards.
Unfortunately the goal seemed to rouse Mourinho's side and they dominated from then on. First Rooney then Martial came close with efforts on goal, before the pressure told in the 35th minute when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his fifth goal of the season to level the scores. Henrik Mkhitaryan made the goal, beating Kenedy to reach the byline and fire in a low cross as the big Swede got in front of Kaboul to turn the ball past Gomes.
The two teams went in to the half time break with one goal apiece.
The second half picked up where the first had ended, with United's multi-million pound squad forcing Watford to defend deeper and deeper as they looked to repel the seemingly endless attacks. With ten men entrenched in their own box, the world's most expensive player, Paul Pogba, was allowed too much time to shoot from 22 yards, firing an unstoppable drive in to the top corner to give Man U the lead in the 59th minute. Less than 60 seconds later, the game was virtually over as Wayne Rooney ghosted past a still-reeling back line to add a third goal for the visitors.
Mazzarri made a triple substitution in the 83rd minute in an effort to claim something from the match but it was too little, too late.

Word was before the weekend that Amrabat was doubtful but then afterwards it is claimed he was available so obviously a disagreement on fitness took place.
Today the head of Watford Medical has been sacked. Maybe Mazzarri would like them to play with a 'niggle' or an injection whilst the medical team refused to sign him off (insurance purposes) to play as they consider him unfit.

Sadly true. He awarded the 2 pens against us at WBA last season and also one at Bournmouth.
I would suggest it is worth betting on a pen awarded in the game. At least we can get something out of the match.

Not only that, he disallowed a perfectly good goal for Capoue in the FA Cup against Leeds, did not award a penalty when Williams clearly pulled Ighalo down to the floor against Swansea, and gave THAT penalty in the playoff semi final against Leicester.

Incredibly, none of the penalties he's awarded against us has been scored. Probably explains why he hates us so much.

I really can't see us getting hammered in this one admittedly I do expect us to loose by the odd goal but we have more than enough in our squad to compete against Manchester United. I feel we have done well to get 4 points in our first five fixtures given the opposition we have faced so this one really is a free spin in my eyes, if we do get something from the game it would be an extremely good result for us especially because they have just lot to their rivals in their last game but if we loose it won't matter too much as most teams will loose point against United.

In my opinion we really do have to play four at the back for this one and keep it tight United are no mugs and they are certainly far too good to go 2 goals down against.

I'm hoping for Manure to have a euro hang over, and for us to keep this momentum going. Can't see manure taking chances against us. I think Jose will try some things out midweek and if the players perform they might get a chance against us but I see him playing a similar team that started against city and giving them a rest midweek. After losing the derby they won't want to be dropping more points behind. As for us it's a freebie I hope we really go for it I'd like to be really optimistic and predict a 2 1 win for us but I'd settle for a draw. 1 1 Cathcart 94th min equalizer so it feels like a win.
