Watford legends.
Evening all,
This week’s interview will be published shortly after half past 5 with a player from back in the 80’s. It is also the first part in a three interview series of players who have all played for us in the top flight and all in different eras. Hope you enjoy it, see you all in Barnsley tomorrow!
You ‘orns..

seems like a nice chap. I remember the Liverpool game well, we were a bit pished and decided Martin Patching was god and screamed for him to be given the ball at every opportunity. Happy days.

Somewhere I'm sure I'll have that Liverpool program. I'll see if I can have a root through my old stuff on Sunday. If I find it he's welcome to it.

Right, apologies for the delay but I got the chance to look tonight. Just lost the last 2 hours looking through the 70's and 80's programs, some great stuff in there. I think this is the one Worrell wanted:
Send me your address LBH and I'll forward it to you for the legend to have.
I also found some prizes for future forum competitions, (probably more appreciated by the "oldies)!

Here's my match ticket from the Liverpool game..
Its not often you get to see your team defeat the reigning champions..pip Manchester United to runners up spot.. and only pay £2 for the privilege!

And a great photo taken at the end of the game. It captures the exact moment that Watford fc acheived its highest ever league position..
Elton has just heard on the tannoy that United have lost and we are runners up.
GT has probably heard it, but cant quite believe its true!

I'm certain Patching played, must have been a change to the line up. That's him in Stevo's pic at the front.

Oh yeah, he played alright.
It was a real Roy of the Rovers type affair.
Patching had only played 4 games that season, back in Sept/Oct. He was due to retire because of a reoccuring knee problem but Taylor decided to give him one last hurrah (can you imagine a modern day manager making such a gesture in such an important game?)
Anyway, Patching not only played, he scored what was to be his last ever goal.
He dident quite give up the game at that point. Apparently he played one last game the following season.. being taken off in a 2-0 defeat at St Andrews. He then went off to run a pub and bore the customers with tales of how his last goal helped Watford finnish runners up in the League!
Here's a match report from the Liverpool game..
http://www.bsad.org/victory/lpoolh2.html
Looking back i think it was the most memorable occasion i have had following the Horns.
NB While searching for info on Martin Patching i came across this article on a Wolves internet site..
http://www.wolvesheroes.com/2008/10/...tle-for-patch/
I never knew about this and just to summarise he collapsed on the way to our play off final in Cardiff and subsequently had to undergo an operation for a brain tumour.
It dident stop him carrying to witness the game though.
Just to add that i hope he has recoverred from the second operation and wish him all the best.

He ran The Post Office Arms in Hemel - which then became known as 'The Patch' - always doing afters for the Treacle Watford Mob, with frequent appearances from Vinny Jones/Hartson on many a Sunday lunch.
