    Default BBC2 Tonight 9PM - Russian hooliganism

    BBC2 Tonight 9PM

    This World...
Russia's Hooligan Army. Might have been worth a watch.... did anyone see it?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08flw2v

    This from the BBC -

At the 2016 European Championships, violent clashes between Russian and English supporters in Marseille put the spotlight on Russian hooliganism. Russian hooligans injured over 100 English supporters, beating two into a coma, and it raised serious concerns ahead of Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup. Filmmaker Alex Stockley von Statzer travels to Russia to experience the country's football fan culture first hand. Featuring footage filmed in Marseille in 2016, rare interviews with members of some of the most feared firms like the Spartak Gladiators and Orel Butchers, and new footage of an organised fight for wannabe recruits, this show uncovers a world where brutal violence has become a mark of honour and a symbol of newly resurgent Russian masculinity.

Most Russian hooligans have moved away from the English movement that inspired them in the 70s and 80s. Today they are organised in firms that are teetotal, physically fit and trained in mixed martial arts. Police have enacted new laws promising bans and jail for any fans that cause trouble and are heavily policing stadiums. Alex travels to Oryol to speak to the Orel Butchers who violently attacked English fans in Marseille. We hear one hooligan taking relish in describing a merciless attack by a number of Russians who kicked an England fan in the head - an attack that was also caught on camera.

Alex also travels to Rostov, which will host five games at the World Cup, to film an organised fight in the woods. Here he meets with a local firm getting ready to audition for new members. Young men fight in a no-holds-barred brawl against young fighters from another local firm. It's a vicious clash similar to what was witnessed in Marseille and is one of the hundreds of fights that firms arrange all across Russia.

Saw them up close in France. Different breed of hooligan. Not the drunk types or part of any casual movement. Proper hardcases that are sober, armed and trained to street fight.

Bought make memories of last June, been following England for over 20 years and never seen anything like that mob last June, they did not show any trouble outside the ground or inside the ground, I reckon it will be the safest World Cup ever, as long as that what Putin wants, same happened in Euro 96 there was a program about what all the English firms were going to do to the travelling fans, very little trouble apart from the England fans played up after they went out to the Germans, when they thought smashing up a vw would prove their Englishness.

Saying that I do not fancy playing the Russians out there to be honest ! Can't wait for it !

Now this may be a problem, he was thoroughly laughing that our best couldn't match theirs in Marseilles.

That was not "our best" in Marseille, England have not had an organised firm since the early 90s, England had numbers but for years there has been more trouble between rival England firms with each other then who England are playing. There won't be many England fans in Russia and the ones going won't be looking for trouble

I'm not arguing, just pointing out that we can't rely on Putin.

If I was offered free tickets, travel, accommodation and a suitcase full of cash I still wouldn't go to the world cup in Russia. It has the potential to be a warzone.

Putin will happily let them get away with violence. He may even encourage it as a form of nationalism. When it gets reported in the media, if he does reply, he'll deny it or make out others caused it or its a conspiracy of the English press.

Ive said this before and Ill say it again for those brave enough to go. Keep your head down and don't look foreign. Don't drink outside and certainly don't speak loudly in English. It is not a stag weekend in the Czech republic, it isn't liberal Western Europe. The Police live on bribes they will stop you for not having the right papers, to get the papers youll need to speak Russian and go wait for a day or so at the local police station while they process this for you.

If you aren't white skinned you are going to have a very hard time.

Have to agree to disagree, I think Putin will want the tournament to go well and prove to the world Russia can host these big events successfully. No England fan will be going there to try and prove a point or Payback for Marseille (A few may ask for their flags back)

I worked on a project in Russia in the 90s. When I left the country the Russian customs guy asked me to turn out my pockets on the counter. When I did so he took all my US dollars, put them in his pocket, and slid everything else back to me. I left quietly. Horrible place.

Also in the 90s I used to go out with a girl that worked for Aeroflot. She used to tell me scary stories about near-misses due to the pilots being drunk. I'd like to think Russia's changed somewhat since then.

I was in Russia climbing last year. Spent 2 days in Moscow before heading to Mineral Vody and up into the Caucasus Mountains. I really disliked Moscow, some lovely historic areas, but the whole city itself was kind of intimidating. The people were not particularly friendly and I just felt there was an atmosphere the entire time.

We travelled down to Mineral Vody by plane, a nice new Aeroflot jet, and had a great time down in the mountains where the people were incredibly friendly. Anyway when we arrived back at Mineral Vody airport, one of our group was refused access into the airport by security as he had lost a piece of visa paperwork given to him by the hotel. Long story short he was allowed into the airport, but not until he had bribed the two security guards. They let him through and did not even put his bag through a security scanner. I was stunned.

Then when boarding the plane, I was climbing the steps up to the plane and could see into the cockpit. The pilot was taking a swig from a bloody hipflask. He promptly saw me and pulled down the blind in the cockpit. I have never been more nervous on a flight, thankfully it was only two hours up to Moscow.

I then had a two hour wait in a hotel one side of Moscow before having to head across the city in the middle of the night to the other international airport. My taxi driver spoke no English and I no Russian. Fortunately he was a decent chap who I think talked about football the whole way, I just nodded and laughed when it seemed appropriate.

    I would not go back.

These are Mark Clattenburg's specific demands to referee the tournament. In fact any match from now on.
