And how far away from that dream are you now?

I wanted to be an astronaut and walk on the Moon.

    About 245,000 miles away.

I didn't particularly want to be anything.

And I've fully achieved my goal in that regard.

I wanted to be a fireman.

And now I’m a Tour Manager and Producer.

    So I’m way off.

I wanted to be a journalist until I realised that my ego was too fragile to cope with asking questions of somebody who knew more than I did.

So I became an analyst of public policy issues. I do a lot of writing and my ego is just fine

I wanted to be a lumberjack. Leaping from tree to tree as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia.

However, I’ve never been to British Columbia.

I dreamt of having my photograph taken with the latest hairstyle so it could be displayed in barber shops up and down the land for all the young fashionista to copy.

As you can see from my profile picture, mission accomplished.

A pilot. And no where near.

Anyway, is this going to become a series @Clive_ofthe_Kremlin ? If so I recommend the title 'Things online companies ask when you forget your password'. A couple of months of questions like these and you could rinse everyone on here.

Same as Otter - wanted to be an astronaut (or spaceman, as most of us in class called it at the time). We were doing a project on space travel in junior school just when the Challenger disaster occurred. Didn't put me off - but came to realise around ten years old that I wasn't anywhere near bright enough:(.

Then I wanted to be a fireman - and most likely would have been if not for my poor eyesight and the fact that contact lenses are not allowed.

Of course - I mostly wanted to be a footballer.

I wanted to be a cowboy.

I had a hilarious follow up line for it, but a dream deferred is too depressing a subject for me to use it.

    Nowhere near.

No money. mechanical knowledge or opportunity. Drive professionally though, trucks at present. My Welsh mate, who drives trucks across Canada and the States, was driving with his best mate (racing driver) and Barry Lee (google him) at Brands Hatch this week, which IS pretty cool.

Wasn't there also a branch up St. Albans Road, next to the pelican crossing down near the Verulam? That's where we were taken as kids for our fashionable bowl haircuts in the 70s...

As a kid I was train mad, so obviously a train driver. As I got closer to leaving school I applied for an apprenticeship with London Underground and landed a job as a signal tech apprentice, (as apprenticeships go it was about as good as it could get, I was very fortunate). After 4 years I was qualified and they put me straight on to 2 years of night shifts, (Tuesday to Saturday). Imagine being 20 and working nights constantly when every single person you know is enjoying life to the max? I lasted 1 year before I left. I still regret leaving.

I had and still have no idea what I want/wanted to be.

The jobs I was aware of when I was 16 were all pretty much obvious (chef, cleaner, mechanic, post man, doctor etc.). Almost nobody I know does anything like that. They are all jobs which I completely don't understand and have no idea how I would've gone about getting into them as a young man.

I read job adverts online and even in closely related fields, the jargon is baffling a lot of the time. Perhaps knowing what "implementing end to end, full stack scale-able enterprise solutions, within dynamic verticals" actually means is the first filter the recruiter needs in the process.

I think at one point I wanted to work up telegraph poles, to drive a tractor at another and then to be a farrier.

When I was young I wanted to be a dancer or work in IT.

As I got older and reassured my goals I wanted to be a footballer. I still play for a small club but doing what I do now is fine too.
