Yesterday was the anniversary of 9/11, and I was looking through the archives to find that we played a game the next day against Bristol City in the League Cup. Looking at that season’s League Cup schedule, it says that some games were also played on the day itself. This was before I was into Watford, so I was wondering if the events of that day were recognised at all before kick-off? I remember we did something after the Paris incident a couple of years ago. Can anyone remember? I’m just curious.

A minutes silence I would think - remember Champions league games were called off.

Think we were 2 down but came back to win 3-2.

The likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard "mourned" the tragedy by getting pissed at Heathrow airport and taking the mick out of US tourists..

I was at Ashton Gate that night, there was a minute's silence. I thought that most matches scheduled for the 11th had been called off though.

We were 2-1 down going into added on time but City were time wasted in epic proportions and the ref added a lot time and we score twice in the final few minutes to win it.

Wasn't the Shatters Cup game on the first anniversary of 9 11. The minutes silence was cancelled due to the crowd trouble pre game?

I remember the minutes silence for Princess Di being ruined by someone in the Vic Road end making a pretend fart noise which caused half the stand to get the giggles...

This reminds me of going down to the Vic the day after World War II broke out. We had a home game against Leyton Orient (then known as Clapton Orient, I think they changed their name after the War) and I believe it was either 0-0 or 1-1. Certainly a draw. It was our last league game of the season as the league got binned off for a few years.

    Happy memories.

My first game was the centennial remembrance for the Battle of Hastings, against Mercia Turnips. We all turned up with arrows in our eyes as a statement of honour and respect. Nowadays they d just use fake arrows, but back in the day we did it for real . Life was tougher back then.

Would settle for a draw and no injuries.

On the day, I recall Liverpool playing a home European match.

The impact a little while to really sink in.

    1-1.. Attendance: 4,751.

On Saturday the 24th of August 1940 we played the Royal Army Service Corps in a friendly at Vicarage Road. The match was interrupted by an air-raid warning after 7 minutes and abandoned after 30 minutes without having been restarted, when the Army team was recalled to duty.
The previous Saturday we beat the Royal Army Medical Corps 9-1. Presumably they had a few out injured.
