Cathcart was at fault for all three goals, a woeful performance by him.

He should be third choice at best. The fact that our biggest transfer ambition was to sign Burnley, a rival's third choice centre back to boost our squad, shows just how much Gino has lost the plot.

Give it 18 months and he'll be in a car park with a sheaf of HSBC letters trying to buy a new bankrupted club. I hope and pray this slide is, as some people conjecture, a prelude to that one dimensional fraud selling up and shoving off.

Big man. Objectively at fault for 3 terrible goals and has the courage to admit it. Stunning and brave.

At least he was honest enough to come out and say it. Most of the people giving him stick on here don’t even go to games or have given up there season ticket. And people talk about the players bottling it?!

Mind you don't agree we played well 2nd half and nor does Pearson I think so bit worrying if the players think that!

True he would come out and admit his fault in public to potentially save face but not all have done that - did anyone after the cup final and other poor/heavy defeats apart from Foster?

Given your determined and vehemently defended obsession with pointing out others' grammatical flaws, it's baffling that you have no idea how apostrophes are used.

I haven't checked the stats but I believe that more goals are scored in the last 5 mins than in amy other 5 min period.

What if someone wanted to go, couldn't as there were no tickets available, still watched all 90 minutes and got emotionally involved in the game.

    Would their opinion still count?

Chalobah was substituted because he had 'back spasms' and NP didn't want to risk him in a 2 man midfield. Seems logical. A bit worrying to have back problems at that age though. Can't be a good sign, can it?

Every time he is subbed off there is a different issue with him. Either he really does pick up that many knocks or Nige is making it up to cover himself. Either way it's not great.

According to NP Chalobah had the problem at half time ..

Yet came out for the 2nd half.

Chalobah looked a bit surprised and disappointed to be coming off as well.

Good to hear Cathcart taking responsibility, and appreciate the strong performances he's had this year. But the fact is, if we want to stay as an established Premier League team, he should be the minimum standard for our defenders - not the best one, still prone to problems.

We've all said it before, Pozzo and Giraldi's failure to improve our defence has left us exposed year after year. The chickens have come home to roost.

I know people are saying the defence need improving year after year and I think everybody agrees that we needed something this season but this defence helped a team finish mid table last season and get to a cup final so can't have been too bad. I don't agree that this has been a failure year after year

And you decided to go down that opposing view/better throw an insult route instead of addressing the question.

It is Sunday after a big defeat so I guess the hangovers are biting hard today.

Do explain ... Do you also have an opinion on the likelihood that we concede (and score) pretty much the same number of 'late goals' (notice the use of single apostrophes there) as anyone else?

I believe this is true too. And stands to reason given that defences will be tiring and the game becomes less organised and more 'stretched'.

I see the failure as not upgrading properly. We have aging players trying to compete in a league that gets faster every year. We are paper thin, as witnessed by so many players in the back four being out of position. While guys have had some outstanding individual performances at times, we are reverting to type now.

People have been wishing for defensive additions since the days of Silva. The fact Mariappa is a regular year after year is illustration of a long-standing problem. Our defence the first year up was superior to this one (Britos/Prodl in their late prime, Cathcart younger and Ake to provide youth.). Plenty of us have been pointing this negligence for many windows even if you haven’t seen it until now.

Well Pearson has shown that with the right coaching this defence can keep clean sheets. But we're always going to have days like yesterday where individual errors are going to cost us.

I don't think anyone expects us to have the perfect defence where no mistakes are made but look at who we've added since our first season back. Femenia, Janmaat, Kabasele, Mariappa, Dawson, Masina, Kaboul, Zuniga, Wague, Zeegelaar, Navarro and Wilmot. We only spent more than £5m on three of those I think. When you look at investment we've made in midfield and attack, I just don't understand why the club thought they could get away with doing the defence on the cheap.

I've got a lot of time for the likes of Mariappa and Cathcart, they seem to give a **** about the club and have served us really well. But they should be squad players to plug gaps when we have injuries and suspensions. You could argue that Mariappa is only playing as he's covering for our two injured right backs, but we've just gone through a transfer window without being linked to one right back. Janmaat will be back in April at this rate, if Kiko comes back and does his hamstring again against Brighton then Mariappa is right back during vital games again.

Don't get me started on centre backs. If we knew Dawson was injured earlier in the week, then let Prodl leave and failed to get a replacement then I despair!
