I like to see a goal from distance. You don’t see as many now as the 10 outfield players of the defending team all race to get back in front of the 6 yard box and teams seem to try to dribble the ball into the net. Keepers seem to be more agile now too.

To see a player with the ball outside the 18 yard box, look up and hit it into the top corner is a thing of beauty

Because it was just as good as some of the nominations. In my opinion.

I was actually surprised how much positive coverage the bbc gave us last night. Probably because ol' bigears wasn't hosting it.

Seemed a bit rushed - only showed the goals basically and a quick chat about Holebas and his daft handball .

Once again not a mention by Big Ears - going on instead about what a brilliant manager Dyche is. The edit, as usual, didn't do us any favours either.

Alan Hansen would have had a field day talking about our defence !

We can all wait to see palarse hit the bar and post and debate that Zaha should have had a pen whilst showing the horns defend bravely. Keep dominating like that and palarse will be fine.

Commentator wasn't convinced by Zaha and maybe the refs feel the same !

Upson and Kilbane said petty much the same too even if they thought he was fouled for the booking .

Something for him to learn from - not at Man U now ofcourse or an England player ..

Agree with the pundits. It was a penalty but Zaha does not help himself.

    Woy talking wot.
Watford fans haven't 'latched onto media hype'. We've witnessed his antics for four or five seasons now.

I agree, but to be fair he's probably oblivious to that.

I thought the overall MotD coverage favoured Palace. They looked like the dominant force in both halves. At least they called Zaha a cheat with their analysis of him.

That is one hell of an understatement!!!

The BBC showed less than 2 mins of the 1st half, and what they did show was all about Palarse on the attack, which as we know they did very little of in the 1st half, they did not show a single WFC attack, not even Okaka hitting the woodwork

Luckily I also had Sky's Match Choice coverage, which shows a lot more of the game and a far more balanced coverage. The Sky stats showed that we had the better of the game, more shots, more possession etc. though overall I think a draw was probably about the right result.

Even the MotD analysis favoured Palarse, in fact they barely even mentioned us and when they showed the table we didn't even get a mention, it was all about Palarse.

    Talk about BBC Bias

P.S Here are the Sky Stats: -

    Possession - WFC 52% CP 48%
    Shots - WFC 14 CP 6
    On Target - WFC 4 CP 1
    Corners - WFC 4 CP 3
    Yellows - WFC 3 CP 5

You never have thought this with what we saw on MotD

I too watched it on 'Game of the Day' and then on the BBC.
It was astonishing how they edited that game.

    Utterly pathetic representation BBC 1.

Having seen it again, im not so sure its that clear cut. While there was contact by Marriappa there wasnt as much as Zaha anticipated, who can clearly be seen deliberately moving his free leg back to try & catch Marriappa therefore making the incident seem worse. He certainly tried to exaggerated what contact was made and the fall, which then surely makes it a form of simulation?

There was a similar situation with a Bournemouth player earlier in the season. I cant remember who they were playing but a muff player was quite clearly fouled in the box yet was booked for diving because he had seen the contact coming and started to go down before contact was made.

Zaha had done a similar thing with the freekick on the edge of the area when he threw himself into the box after being fouled.

Its a bit of a grey area and I dont think the ref was necessarily wrong to book him for diving. Likewise we couldnt have had many complaints if the pen had been given

And the near own goal plus the 2 Richarlison efforts in the 2nd half!

At least 4 efforts then so actually more than usual - we didn't have that many more efforts from what I can remember which would be considered worth showing.

Most of it was spent showing Zaha and his antics - that was the main talking point afterwards of course too as you might expect.

Why are we even debating this? If we wanted to sort diving etc, we'd have voted for VAR, but we didn't.

Whether the guy dived or not really doesn't matter.

The problem with Zaha is he is looking for an excuse to hit the ground every time he gets the ball. The intent to con the ref is so obvious. It's pathetic really because he could be so much better than that. I don't buy into all this being 'entitled to go down' nonsense.

That is what the pundits normally say which is partly why the Palace fans seemed to have such a beef about the coverage he gets.

As I say if Zaha played for England and/or a big team he might get less criticism but the bloke doesn't so....and as you say it stands out because none of his team-mates do the same.

I don't think it would make any difference whether he played for England or not. I'm just glad the media have finally cottoned on to his cheating antics.

Maybe but the likes of Ali and Kane didn't get criticised so much when they were accused of it but yes Zaha seems to be caught up in such a row each week by all fans so its not just us being bitter about the play-off final...when if anything most of us admitted that was a penalty!

  29. Precisely. I think one incident highlighted this yesterday - in the second half, Mariappa was booked for tugging Zaha's shirt on the half way line to stop a quick break and, of course, Zaha stayed on his feet and complained. Anytime he got near the penalty area and that or similar happened, the complaints only followed the tumble.

Sorry, i didnt realise we couldnt talk about things pertaining to Watford FC in a Watford FC forum.

It matters because its the main talking point of the game - 3 times yesterday he tried to con the ref to get a penalty and arguably should have been awarded one.

It isn't the main talking point at all. I'd suggest the main issue was the inability to convert our first half pressure into goals.

The PL have decided that rather than stamp out diving, they'd rather artificially maintain controversial talking points by refusing help from technology.

The answer to whether he dived or not is simple - bring in VAR and use it properly. Until then, discussing the incident is an utter waste of time.

If VAR was brought in and failed to make the right call, I'd be happy to discuss ways the mistake could be eradicated in the future - but until then, what's the point? Just forget it and get on with your day.

I'm not sure even VAR would help with Zaha. OK , the slow motion replay and a still show Mariappa's foot in contact with Zaha's ankle, but Mariappa's foot was flat, so I still couldn't see if it was foot to ankle or ankle to foot. I don't agree that a player is entitled to vault over a leg that is still and claim a free kick, but I accept that isn't the view of many refs and pundits, but it doesn't sit right with me.

The Times says that Roy reckons that Palace did well to stand up to Watford's aggression and in the second half were able to play their football.

I, on the other hand, thought that we played a lot of football, especially in the first half.

The Beeb thought we were both crap.

Mr IBB probably agrees with Roy, but as we know, he's always wrong

WillisWasTheWorst Its making less grammar mistake's thats important

All this depends on your definition of a ‘dive’. The old school definition (mine) says that if you’re not knocked off balance by the challenge, then it’s a dive. The modern definition is that it’s only a dive if there is no contact, otherwise the player is “entitled to go down”. Ugh! The reason for the latter is that refs and pundits are trying to make all decisions black and white: contact = penalty, no contact = dive. It’s the same as people wanting a free kick for handball EVERY time the ball hits the arm. I actually think the majority of footballers now dive (old definition) because that’s the way the game is refereed. Zaha is just one of the most extreme exponents.
