I just thought it was going to be another 6-0. We looked like the better team then bam, 3-0. Man city all over again. Tuesday night, cold, ashley young on a hattrick and mocking us, their cocky fans out singing us...I couldnt see any reason to stay.

see above. I've always done it. I know some people disagree and say you should stay and support until the end, but I hate seeing us get battered, and sitting there watching it - after having forked out loads of cash for the pleasure - just seems pointless. Normally it's straight to the pub but I'm too old to do that on a tuesday so it was straight home. Admittedly I've missed some great come backs over the years but usually it's the right policy. We were poised to leave as soon as leicester got THAT penalty...

Not sure you make a strong case when your comparisons to Gray are one who was cheaper and playing for a team who create and score few, but has still scored more, along with someone who will probably be in the top 3 or 4 scorers in the division at the end of the season.

Surely Rojos would have got a 2nd yellow for committing the foul for the penalty?

To be fair I think Man U are always the loudest away fans - they never let themselves down in that department. I went to the Chelsea Man U cup quarter final last year and despite José parking the bus for 90 minutes their lot never stopped making a racket.

We were our own worst enemies last night. First twenty minutes we played them off the park with some fantastic expansive football. Unfortunately we then failed to deal with a gap caused by the rusty Prodl allowing Young to hit a great strike beating Gomes at his post.

The second goal was a peach of a free kick but as others have alluded to should have been ten yards further back unless Doucoure was penalised for a tackle from behind despite clearly winning the ball. Those two goals in a couple of minutes knocked the wind from our sails. We tried playing more attacking football from then on but we're caught on the counter after Prodl tried to be clever and fluffed a simple header. We did have a few opportunities against them in the first half but to no avail.

Second half a more dogged performance overall. Hughes going off was a blow but it allowed Pereyra to come on and show his worth which he did. The substitutions did change the game for us and we looked better for it. I did find Gray awfully static and when he did make runs he ran away from the direction of the ball. The less said about his first touch the better.

Lingard should never have scored, Cleverley should have yanked him back and taken the yellow. It's not sporting but it would have nullified the threat. That being said our defence should not just back off of him. It was a good goal made to look world class by incompetent defending.

Ashley Young - what do people want/ expect him to do after he scores? Hand in a written apology for the tannoy announcer to read out at half time?
Scummer Gray - really beginning to grate on a number of levels
Fans - thank God the players didn't give up like the fans did. Our home support is feeble
Team - did very well, I thought. Such a shame we conceded the 4th when we did - I fancied us to draw/win at that point.

The reason Utd's fans are loud is most of them attending the match are not really away.

United might be, but most of the fans probably live closer to the away ground than the home fans do

Agreed. Since we’ve been promoted they’ve been the best away fans to visit the vic. To create that amount of noise on a Tuesday night is impressive.

I wish we could pull off absolute flukes like that. Takes a lot of practice.

We had several near-misses before they'd created a single decent chance, but then fell apart once they'd scored. If Mourinho had wanted to go for it like Citeh did, it could have been another 6-0. Our late recovery after the substitutions made the evening less embarrassing, but there was an hour of awfulness to endure.

True, they made a great noise. It was lovely to hear those old 60s and 70s chants and songs again. Maybe the last time they went to a football match was during GT's first coming.

I agree, I felt we only got back into it because United allowed it to happen by sitting back.

This is the difference between City and United. City would have gone on to score 6, which they did. United got themselves into trouble by sitting back. This is why City will win the league and United will be in their shadow this season.

I agree with almost all of that, but I enjoyed Carrillo's performance which I've never done before.

Man Utd were poor against Brighton last time out, Spurs were poor against Leicester last night. I think we might get another backlash on Saturday.

Exactly. And to further rub salt in our wounds: this morning, in the cold light of day, I was quite pleased that it looks like Young is getting his mojo back - it means another "yellow" player succeeding, hopefully to a "winning" England squad. He didn't score those goals because he was lucky or we were shyte - he scored them because he's very, very good.

I'm afraid that's inevitable. Spurs have only one once in their last 5, picking up only 1 point in their last 3 games.

If we don't get another battering, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Why? You missed some entertaining football, such as when Mapps gifted them a fourth goal and they failed to score, and Watford's comeback when we all started to half-believe we could get a draw.

If you can't enjoy a goalfest where Watford don't come out on top, then Watford isn't the club for you. Go and watch Citeh.

    Two points.

Gray's movement is not helping the team & he seems unable or unwilling to think within the context of the team.

At NU in the first half the ball broke to Clevs who pushed towards the box. Just as he was about to shoot, Gray intervened. Not only was Clevs in a far better position but Gray was running back from offside. Offside given.

In the same match, Gray failed to find a yard of space to allow Richie to square the ball for a tap in.

Last night Carrillo beat a couple of defenders on the edge of the box & shot, only for Gray, running towards the ball, to block the shot 8 yards out.

Contrast this with Deeney. Before he had touched the ball, Doucoure burst into the box. Seeing this, Deeney ran away to the right creating space for Doucs to move forward.

None of these is a hanging offence for the wretched Gray but, piece by piece, I'm afraid I see a player out of his depth. As some shrewd observers have noted, Gray does his best work when he doesn't have to think. At this level, much of the difference is in the thinking & adapting to the changing situation.

If he is truly 'as thick as fudge' (in a footballing sense), it's back to the Champo for him. Leeds could be a good fit.

    Point 2.

Gray's failings seriously reduce Richie's options. If the centre forward isn't available, what can the left winger do?

Cut in & break into the box, & move into the centre himself. The four best headed chances we had were from Richie, all from a central position. Where was the #9?

    Hugely frustrating for Richie.

My third of two points is to praise Richie's composure. He is one of the most fouled players in the division & yet he has been booked only twice (once for the Swansea celebration). Composed & dignified. What an example for kids & certainly for the posturing ninnies we entertained last night.

Wasn't THAT penalty a lesson for life for you? You didn't deserve to see what followed.

And while that 6-0 stuffing by Citeh was disappointing, the football was so sublime that I had to enjoy it.

I honestly cant. It's probably not so much watford isnt the club for me, it's more like football isnt the sport for me! I only go for the highs when we score and win. I even dont get much enjoyment from a tight 1-0 win, apart from the bit where we score and the final whistle...the rest is just a feeling of anxiety that'll we'll concede any minute.

I would love to support city, but unfortunately I was born in shrodells ward watford general so I have no choice but to watch these frustrating ****s!

I can't stand this nonsense where players don't celebrate against their old club. Celebrating scoring for the team you are currently playing for and having respect/affection for the club you've scored against are not mutually exclusive. I thought he had a great game and took pride from the fact that he learnt his trade in our academy back in the day when we didn't have two shillings to rub together. I'm annoyed we didn't do more to stop him but that's the same with any oppo player who does well against us.

If some of our fans want to boo him, that's their prerogative, but I'm pretty sure it benefits the player much more than the team he's just scored against.

celebrating the goals is one thing, deliberately mocking the fans with the hands behind the ears and the machine gun thing is unnecessary and disrespectful. I just found it strange behaviour considering the nice things he's said about us in the past.

Personally I dont much care about that sort of thing, but some people do and I understand why. Rooney did the same thing to the everton fans when he played for man utd, despite being a fan. I just put it down to footballers being massive thickos.

Rooney used to get absolute dogs abuse from Everton fans though, Young always gets a decent reception from us. I'm not going to cry about it like some, or say that he's wiped out all the good he's done for the club in the past, but it's just quite bemusing behaviour.

Two basic errors and naivety from us. Kabasele, head it anywhere but there, preferably back to Gomes. Cleverley, too nice, BRING HIM DOWN. Personally would have made changes at least half time, but no reason why we can't change before 45 minutes either if it's going so wrong. Onwards and upwards, 2nd half was encouraging.

I can't speak for him but my guess is that was directed at those fans who'd been giving him stick. If someone calls me all the names under the sun and I then score against their team, I'd feel well within my rights to remind them what they were saying to me a few moments earlier. It's simple human nature. It's not a slight against the coaches who trained him as a kid or the majority of fans who used to cheer him on. If he'd been universally cheered/applauded when he came on he probably wouldn't have done that. I can't say whether or not it would have boosted his performance but lets face it, booing him didn't exactly hinder his performance did it!? I'm certainly not saying we should universally cheer/applaud old players by the way. Simply that if we choose to give them stick, don't be offended if they have a dig back.

Well once more I thoroughly enjoyed watching us play. Of course seeing us concede goals and lose is as horrible as it ever was and ever will be, but the pleasure in watching our football this year is so high.

Man utd are known for a solid defence and that's what they showed, very strong individually and as a unit. Middle third of the pitch we looked better, but breaking them down until the last 20 minutes was hard work.

I don't think any of the team let us down, we played well, but we're up against a strong and of course very expensive team. The money they've spent buys those moments of quality.

We are miles closer to that standard now though than we have been for 30 odd years.

Already looking forward to the next one.
