Sylva's strategy

What strategy would you now adopt if you were MS?
He has a superb record abroad with a 57% win rate over a five year period. Nothing he does in England will undermine that so he knows he can go abroad at any time he chooses.
In the Premiership though he has only a 34% win rate across two clubs. That is unlikely to impress many other clubs. If he wants to stay in England what is his best strategy?
Of course the answer is to win the rest of his games this season and make the last three months an uncomfortable blip. Even an increase to 40% win rate (6 wins) would likely make him our most successful Premiership Manager over the last three years. Perfectly possible. If we finished on mid 40s points I bet the Pozzos would be happy for him to stay as they would accept that injuries and lack of a few key players which could be addressed in the summer would do the trick. They must want to keep a manager more than one year and not have this constant changeover problem. He would also be "marketable" again as a Premiership Manager - but perhaps not at a "top" club.

If though his current form continues we will be in or around the relegation positions and I can not see him staying with us. If he wants to stay in England he then has to lay the blame on Watford. He will stress (as he already has) that he was not given the players he was promised in the summer, that we were unlucky with injuries but also had an incompetent physio team who persistently failed to get players back to proper fitness in a timely manner and now he is likely to be able to add that we did nothing in January when it was clear we needed extra strength.

I wonder whether that would be convincing if you were another middle order Prem club. We have seen QSF and Mazzarri considered or offered positions - why not him?

    Stop moaning.
Stop flashing your watch at every opportunity.
Start coaching and organising the defenders that we have fit.
Start looking a little happier and more enthusiastic.
    Start earning your fee.
    Grow up.

Who is Sylva? what is she,
That all our swains commend her?
    Holy, fair, and wise is she;
The heaven such grace did lend her,
    That she might admirèd be.

His 34% win ratio in the Prem is with a side who lay bottom when we took over, and then with a club who finished 17th last season.

There was a buzz and a positive vibe about Silva when we appointed him. Most people here were pleased.

He was sufficently highly thought of in the game that Everton wanted him above all us, even knowing he was under contract and it would cost them money.

Barely a soul complained about him as we climbed to 4th place with some impressive performances.

He's now going the same way that QSF and Mazzarri did. A bright start followed by a hideous downturn.

The stick to beat Mazzarri with was his refusal to master the language. Silva's is the way he handled himself during the Everton approach.

I'm no apologist for Silva. Something's badly wrong. But don't think it's all down to him. The whole club set up needs looking at, and removing a Head Coach each time we flounder is merely like putting a sticking plaster over it.

Gosh that's a bit left-field isn't it? What do you make of that?

Technically we won't be his first match in charge now then! Although I doubt he'll contribute much tonight.

Oh..I see he takes charge officially tomorrow! So we will be!

I would attempts to draw a line under the past 3 months and move forward with a fresh sense of purpose and optimism. I'd probably go for a new image too and maybe ask Holebas to give me a makeover based on some of the exciting and stylish fashion lines he sells. The outfit below, for instance, would look great on any touchline - particularly if twinned with a f***ing ludicrous wrist watch img_7127_kopie.jpg

The fact that Stoke wanted QSF and Newcastle apparantley wanted Deeney suggest that some clubs only see what they want to see when it comes to appointing managers and buying players. At a high level we are still a basket case of a club in the media, anything other than a relegation with us and I think Silva would still be able to get a job in the Prem with a team outside of the top 6.

We play Stoke on 31st Jan, so a couple of weeks to go. He’ll have them fired up by then no doubt.

I honestly think he needs to get on the sun beds. His coaching ability has faded with his tan. He's like the skintone Samson. He now looks like he could have been born in watford: pasty and chubby, like all the other resident men.

In a season full of terrible results and statistics, being the last side who failed to score against Stoke is probably the worst!

Yes I was not really looking to start another "how much do we hate Silva" thread. I was thinking more about his perspective. When he woke up this morning was he working out how to get Watford out of their current slump or was he preparing his excuses for what happens to him if we fail? In other words has his relationship with the Pozzos etc got to the stage where he is not really too bothered about us any more ? If so his strategy will be all about making "Silva" look good in the face of the horrendous mistreatment he feels he has endured?
As I said he can probably walk into a top job in Europe if he desires so it lessens his need to succeed here. He may have the post Everton attitude "screw you". I don't think that is the case and certainly hope not - but sometimes his attitude makes you wonder.

It would be nice if he was to say to the players, "now let's all perform until the end of the season like we did in the second half" - and pick the side accordingly, at least until Chalobah and Hughes are available again.

I don’t think your comparison with win percentages abroad means an awful lot- wasn’t he managing title contenders over there? Here he’s had 2 jobs: us and Hull. It’s bound to be a lower percentage.

  21. Sting

    Sting Squad Player

You are right that it is not comparing apples with apples. That is not the point though - the point is for whatever reason he has a good percentage wins record abroad which will stand him in good stead should he wish to leave here. Porto for one were keen to get him.
Equally the low percentage here reflects the fact he is not managing one of the top six sides so cannot hope for such a high percentage - however unless he wishes to be viewed as a manager of successive relegation sides his percentages need to pick up. How many clubs do you expect to want him if he takes us down?

He's a good enough coach to turn things around and win people over, if he really wants to that is.

It's the best option he's got if he wants to go anywhere in the Premier League. Give us a few seasons, and make this slump a memory.

I think we could do worse than swap him for Pellegrino at Southampton. Our defence would be shored up enough to see us safe and they would sew up a relegation spot!

I’m not one for conspiracies , but is it the same person, or has Silva left the club and been replaced by a look a like - it would explain a lot

His strategy is to work out with his agent and accountant how best to maximise the tax advantages of getting his contract terminated in June. There will be loads of jobs for him to go for. He has no interest in Watford football club, but his family responsibilities mean he has to way up some important personal financial questions. If I was him I would retain the payment of wages in euros to his Portuguese account, even though the personal tax rates are more onerous. Thank goodness known of the Greek payments were locked up with the capital controls.
