How come you played your last game on March 12th and yet another team don't play their 3rd from last until 30th April? Have they given up football for Lent?

I am actually now without a job for next season (unless it's to be helping out coaching with Hendon). I've now left Hendon Athletic as manager as I'd got a job coaching a local U15s team next season, Hendon found a replacement for me and now i've been told that the U15s team isn't going ahead next season due to lack of players. Oops. It's coming up to that time though where clubs start advertising for new coaches/managers so i'm sure i'll find something. Worst case scenario is it's time for me to do all sorts of analysis articles etc instead whilst I wait for a new job.

Ah the Joka syndrome! .... unless you actually punched someone I don't think your CV will do you any harm and you'll get something soon. Whatever happens don't panic as in all likelihood some of the jobs you miss out on will come up again even before the season starts.

How come you wanted to leave Hendon for an U15s team?

All the paid coaching jobs i've looked at require experience of coaching youth which I haven't yet had experience of, so now seems a good time to move on and try and get that!

Now got 3 potential offers with a variety of clubs, one I can't tell people about yet (it's a set piece analyst role at a pro club), another is a betting analyst role and another is a paid part time job coaching U16s. Things on the up!

Time for a small update for anyone interested: Been offered the paid U16s role and the set-piece analyst role and should find out today whether I got the betting analyst role that I applied for (and did a sample game) - although i'm going to turn down the betting role if I get it as I can't deal with having 4 jobs at the same time...

So it's time to flick back to the start of the thread to see what's happened and if I'm on course - back in early August 2015 I said the following:

I've since completed my level 2 in goalkeeping, but annoyingly the FA decided to scrap the FA youth awards and incorporate them within the new look Level 2 (which started last August) - which means I've been unable to complete them without completely re-doing my level 2 (and at £400 now that's not high on my list of priorities!).

But I should be able to take my UEFA B now I'm: A) coaching kids and B) got a role at a pro team - so hopefully I'll manage to get a spot soon (although it'll take almost a year from starting the course to completing it) and then that will open up a whole host of jobs non-league managerial jobs for me.

However, I think I've found a huge niche that could potentially lead to some fantastic further opportunities - set-pieces (I think I've mentioned on here a number of times) are ridiculously under-valued in football at present, so about a year ago I started doing as much research on set-pieces as I could. I got a voluntary role at a leading analysis website doing set-piece work on teams who are good at attacking or defending set-pieces (https://www.esdfanalysis.com/author/stuart-reid/). Then in May I went on an analysis course at Leyton Orient led by the head of analysis there. Whilst on the course I pitched my vision of the future of football - every team having a set-piece analyst who works out how best how to exploit the opposition's weaknesses and how to nullify their threats. 2 weeks later I get an email from him asking if I'd like to join Orient for the season as a set-piece analyst. It's measurable work and something that is not really done (I only know of Brentford that have one in the FL) in football at the moment. But I'm ahead of the curve so hopefully, if I'm right and clubs start spending more on analysis (particularly on set-pieces) I'll be one of the leading figures in it which should get be a great job at a big club and that's a great route into the pro game.

So I'm pretty much on track (despite the FAs best efforts!) and definitely gonna stick with everything i'm doing for the time being.

Cheers for you all for taking an interest!

A quick update for those that are vaguely interested!

I took the paid U16s role (although that teams now fallen apart through no fault of my own, so now I'm taking the U14s) and the role at Leyton Orient which I've been doing all season and is going well, despite Orients league position. I have now fully committed myself into the set-piece niche (https://www.esdfanalysis.com/set-piece-analysis/ - for all my articles) and it's going amazingly well and I genuinely think a pro club will likely pick me up soon. I recently did a piece on a set-piece coach (one of the few in the world) who has worked for AC Milan, Fiorentina, Brentford and is now at Leeds. He's now read the article I did on him, along with my others and has asked to meet with me when Leeds come down to play QPR in a few weeks time.

    Exciting stuff!

Good pieces Reid's . Not got through all of them yet.

What do you think of Watford s improved set piece defending against Newcastle ?

It was noticeably improved but helped by some poor Newcastle crossing .

Also what was the role of Betting Analyst you described earlier ? Was that working for a betting company ?

I was only half watching so not too sure if we did anything different! I didn't get the betting analyst role (think they said they had over 150 applicants, of which me and 29 others got to the final stage). Was pretty boring stuff though - inputting data on a map of the pitch etc. Wouldn't have time to do that alongside all the other stuff anyway!

Forgot about this thread so will give you an update for those that are bothered! Spent the season working (although was unpaid!) for Millwall doing set-piece analysis which was effective (as Millwall averaged 0.45 xG per game from set-pieces alone). This lead to a meeting with the manager of a certain Championship team in Wales (who's now at Brighton!) to see what I could offer them, despite being impressed with what I could offer they were after an all-encompassing role of set-piece coach + analyst if they were to create a role (whilst holding my coaching badges I haven't even seen a professional set-piece session, so jumping in and coaching would be a bit of an ask) so that was a bit disappointing, despite being a cool experience.

However, I'm hopefully expecting 2 job offers before the start of the season (one from the Championship, and one from a PL club). Didn't think I'd ever get this far tbh, and deciding to specialise in set-pieces was a fantastic move as it's an area where there's really not much knowledge - yet is such an important area of the game.

Good luck with the offers. Mods - who deals with reference requests here ?
It's always slightly disconcerting to have someone who knows about football on the forum. You curd do with brushing up on your "World cheeses" though - you have some whey to go.

Money all tied up in new CBs hopefully! I did only send it the week of the FA Cup final, but imagine if there was any chance of it happening there'd be some contact between me writing a letter and them outright offering me a job.

I think after the cup final showing, the assumption is that you just start 1st July. Whatever it costs.

I saw a chart on twitter showing how Millwall absolutely dominated the Championship in terms of set piece chance creation. Well done! Did they have a set piece coach or do you - humbly, of course - think it was all down to you?

Be interesting to see how they get on without you next year.

....also, for your own cv, do you have a "before and after" set of stats which show the improvement you've made ? Not wishing to throw a bucket of cold water on LPC213's comments but haven't they always had a reputation of being great at set-pieces ?

It definitely wasn't all down to me, but I like to think I played a part! They don't have a dedicated set-piece coach, but the manager is very keen on them and spends a lot of time on them in training.

I've only focused on corners and only have data for goals scored over the last couple of seasons (got more specialized stats for this season but nothing to compare them against!).

    17/18 - 5 goals from 272 corners taken (1.84%)
    18/19 - 8 goals from 256 corners taken (3.13%)

Presume they are "Attacking corner" stats rather than "Defending corner" stats...? :)
Generally I'm surprised only 3% of corners directly lead to a goal, is that what those stats are saying ??

  33. reids

    reids First Team

Ah yeah that was attacking, defensive wise was slightly worse but still a +GD overall

    17/18: 6 goals conceded from 236 corners faced (2.54%)
    18/19: 7 goals conceded from 253 corners faced (2.77%)

Yeah roughly 3% is normally the average (2.66% in the Championship this season). Makes you wonder why people get all excited whenever their team gets a corner (especially if they're not a team that excels at them!) doesn't it!

I was re-reading this the other day, it's mad to me that 4 years later I haven't ended up where I wanted to in the original post, but instead I've gone a different route to break into football which has let me pitch to staff at Man City and Premier League managers, had my work praised by staff at Man Utd and now have setup my own set-piece consultancy business. I have one paying client so far in America and am now on the grind trying to get more teams signed up which is frustrating but a necessary part of it.

Finding it incredibly hard to showcase what I can do though - described perfectly by that happened yesterday. Had a meeting with a club who were interested in hiring me, analysis guys were sold but owners were unconvinced, so had a 2nd meeting (this time with the owners and the analysis guys), I had done them an analysis for free so they could see the process from me > coaches > training pitch > match day which I gave them at the end of it. Match-day comes around, they only get 2 corners, of which they used one of my routines for one of them - it ended in a 0.31 xG shot (that's a shot with a 31% chance of a goal). They still don't wanna hire me, absolutely crazy.
