I saw this today and pondered that there's only 50mill between top and bottom which is probably less than Utd paid in agents fees alone last summer.
So I researched Utds total revenue for this year and it's 450 mill. So only 1/3 of Man Utd's revenue comes from the premier league .

I know it sounds like I'm stating the obvious but I was surprised that Utds non TV revenue was so much

Aston Villa, wages 85% of turnover. Good grief.

And yet clubs still get into so much debt!

when they swap 6 and 4 million for the likes of Oulare and Sinclair respectively you can understand why!

Possibly not the right thread for this question so aplogies if so - but how much of our new-found riches do you think we now spend on pitch maintenance? I cannot ever recall the pitch looking anywhere near as good as it is now - even during the winter months it was like a carpet. I know they got a new team in after the debacle of last season, so with their wages plus upkeep of all the training pitches that also look amazing; the light rigs etc that must use some serious electricity I'm assuming it's a fairly hefty bill? Are the running costs the reason why all the pitches in the prem are significantly better than those in the lower divisions?

Oh blimey now youre asking! I didnt have much to do with finances when i was a groundsman.. just did the job. But i can let you know what i know.

First off congrats to the new groundsmen.. some clear improvements and i was a bit sceptical when they started giving what i read about the underlying problem such as drainage issues.
Cost of running growth lamps? Not 100% sure.. but significant because we were told to reduce usage by the club i was working for once theyd sussed out what it was costing! The large rigs i was using had 64x 1000 watt lamps on each.. and some clubs have 10-12 of them, sometimes running 15-20 hours a day. I just did some rudimentary costing compared with using a 1KW heater and (very roughly) it came to 2 grand a month for each rig.. i guess with some discounts for large energy consumers.
Then there's the cost of buying the rigs which range from around 25 grand for baby rigs to 100 grand for the largest.
This certainly is a big expense in the overall budget for modern day groundskeeping. Light rigs have become the standard now and that's right down to even some non league clubs who might have a couple of baby rigs for the goalmouths.

If i was to guess annual overall maintenance costs.. for the main stadium and the training complex (remembering they have a couple of Prem standard pitches) i would say in the region of 300K pounds. That covers probably 4/5 staff.. fertilizers, machinery usage and depreciation, seed, the rigs etc etc.

I would guess some clubs spend 3/4 times that (Arsenal for instance have 16 full time groundstaff) and i would guess clubs in the lower reaches probably get by on 150 grand a year and 1-2 staff.

Like all over things the standard of pitches improve with the amount of money you can throw at them.
