It was so dark at the Drill Field without the floodlights I couldn't say what colours they wore.

Aylesbury United had a good run of FA cup results in the 80's.. and wore green.

Can i ask when that fa cup game was? Ive always been interested in the Vic being used as a neutral venue.

Blimey 4 - 1 to Colchester - sounds a cracker, and I can remember nothing about the actual game, other than I was there.
3rd round was the trip to West Ham, where we lost 1 - 0 to a late Pop Robson goal, we played really well.

Might as well talk to meself as no one else is interested :)

Can you recall any other games where the Vic was used as a neutral venue?

Stevo, you are our archivist par excellence.

The halftime penalty shootouts & Saracens are the only two instances of when our turf has been usurped which spring to mind.

Well i never knew about the Colchester v AFCB game or the Amateur Cup semi-final that Willis mentioned.

Not strictly as a neutral venue but the England under 21 side played at the Vic in 1979 (v Denmark) and in 1988 (also vs Denmark)
I was at the 88 game and because my brother was seeing a young lady who worked fro the FA at the time we went along as VIP guests. Only time i got to see the behind the scenes stuff in the old Main Stand. We had a buffet at half time and it was like a who's who of English football in the room. Everyone from Brian Clough to Bob Paisley to Bert Millichip. The full England squad were also there and i stood next to Paul Gascoigne as he tucked into the spread. Dave Seaman shouted across to him.. "you wont find any Mars bars there Gazza you fat git!" True story.

    Lucky you!

Amazed so much top brass at a u21 match.

Hopefully, your bro didn’t dump the young lady once he had gorged on the free buffet & literally rubbed shoulders with Cloughie.

Dont recall what happened with that relationship.. but we did go along to the full international at Wembley the following evening (also sat with the FA bigwigs) I guess that's why the u21 game was so well attended as many would have been staying in the area for the next days game. Managers overseeing players etc.. and a free buffet.

I remember accompanying a school friend to WHL in about 1978.
All of their fans were moaning at their players and each other.
    Nothing appears to have changed!

Yes I was there too. Went with a friend and his parents. Complained that we couldn't see as couldn't get onto the terrace from the gangway, too packed, so we were lead out through the players tunnel onto the pitch and allowed to climb over into the terracing. Amazing experience as a 14 year old in front of such a large crowd. We payed so well that day and we were just discussing who would be getting the tickets for the replay when they scored.

I too went to Upton Park that day. I was at the back and was only little, so didn’t see a bloody thing. I’m glad to hear after forty years we played well that day

Got Anthony Taylor for this one. Dreadful referee who always sides with the bigger side. We had him when we lost that match against Spurs at home a couple of years ago. He was so one sided giving them absolutely everything.

He and Michael Oliver are the two I dispair when I know they are doing one of our games.

He's been appointed for the Arsenal game at the weekend. Surely we haven't got him twice in 4 days?

Good grief......what have done to deserve that. I suppose we are being a little too successful and need bringing down to earth a bit.

The other thing about that day was that the game was due to be on MOTD but the BBC cameramen/technicians (?) were on strike and the programme was blacked out so no-one saw it.
I also remember the PA announcer telling everyone at the end to take care going home because it was the biggest crowd they’d had there for some years. Oh, the magic of the Cup back then!

Me too - 36000 in Upton Park and we played so well, only to lose to a late goal. Was supposed to have been on MotD that evening but there was a technicians strike so it wasn't aired

I guess that is fair as he can give loads of decsions against us for Spurs and then loads of decisions against us for arsenal just to even it up ??

They've sold about 14,000 I think I read. Although I expect they're scraping the barrel of their membership priority list and have a fair few neutrals from the MK Dons mailing list in with them too.

  34. I will not be going to this. Despite being 45 minutes closer than home matches, I still don't fancy the 2 hour trip to watch us spank Spurs B.

I shall endeavour to fish at a local river.

    0-10 to the golden boys.

Could do with a win after a loss and a draw, but guess it will be our B team vs spurs B team so anybody’s guess on the score

At least it should be easier to get a stream / radio commentary of this match , the last roun didn’t seem to broadcast anywhere
