John 'Fats' Barnes Says We're Unstable

"I don't know how they've stayed up and I have to say I don't think they can continue to be run like they are and be successful. They are going to have to get some stability" mumbled the big man whilst spitting chocolate digestive crumbs down his button bulging food-stained shirt front.

I'm not sure why he'd care. Normally he's more concerned with desperately trying to beautify his beloved Scousers - who he refers to as "we" rather than the "they" we receive.

"none of the players are committed to the club" splutters Butterball Barnes. He knows because he's interviewed them all individually.

Well at least they have enough commitment to the club to not frequently slate and demean us publicly, as certain other buckle-busting failed ex-Tranmere managers seem to do.

Great player for us but rarely seems to have anything positive to say. Poor pundit

I think all these fat jokes about John Barnes are mean. He's already got enough on his plate.

When you look back at the footage of how good Barnes was for us, I find it sad that he regularly has nothing nice to say about us. I treat the young John Barnes in a yellow shirt as a totally different person to the devoted, chunky scouser that comes out with rubbish such as this.

You never hear him criticise how Liverpool are run. For a supposedly "huge" club - no league title in 27 years plus many years absent from the champions league would suggest that not all is well up there either.

How many clubs have players who are fully "committed" to their clubs!?

Look at the likes of Torres,Sterling and Suarez in the past at Liverpool - off at the first chance they had.

    Coutinho will be the same...

Even Steven "Mr Liverpool" Gerrard wanted to move on until they offered him a new contract (big) and the locals threatened him.

Like many former pundits he hasn't grasped that the only people loyal in football are the fans and that is debatable at some clubs!

The last thing I expect from players is totally loyalty and committed - so long as they give it a go on the pitch.

"John Barnes’ complete lack of success as a football pundit is 'entirely understandable', according to many Watford fans, who believe it is only a matter of time before his opinion is no longer sought by even provincial entertainment radio.

Barnes, it may come as a surprise to you, and him, started his career at Vicarage Road and played more than 200 times for the Hornets, but is not a fan of the club.

For the third successive season a new head coach, Marco Silva, will be at the helm for the Hornets, a job Barnes clearly is not suited for.

Speaking to Ladbrokes, Hornet Boy 1 had some harsh words to say about Watford, which included questioning the commitment of the players and saying the last few years should have been an example of how not to run a club"

"John Barnes is the most unusual choice of pundit in the country. He really is," A Watford fan representative said.

"His philosophy and what he’s done in his post playing career should be an example of what Watford fans think you shouldn’t do if you want to be taken seriously. But somehow, despite his abject failures as a manager, people still ask his opinion.

"He still thinks he should be handed a coaching job, when he’s already had too many opportunities, and should have been committed for the way he went about management.

"I don't know how he still gets paid for his opinion, and I don't think he can continue to do so like he is and be successful. And he could really do with a corset for some stability."

Barnes does not view the removal of his name from the pundit list due to his lack of footballing nous as necessary though, as he explained in May: "Where I am different from other football pundits is that I have a huge fat backside," he told Five Live.

In interviews that I have read or heard, Barnes comes across as incredibly bitter about most things these days. Best remembered for what he was

  9. I knew him a bit in the eighties, and he was a good bloke and took part in all the positive things the Club were doing back then. I just wish he would refuse to respond if anyone ever asks him about Watford, rather than spurt out the uninformed drivel he gets paid for now. As Lloyd says above, remember him for what he was, not this sad figure he has become.

For fans like me who weren't even born when he played for us, it's kinda hard to remember him for his football skill. All I see is a man who is labelled as our greatest ever player (and deservedly so) continuously slag off our club because we're "not in our place" and cos we're run slightly differently.

If he's old school and likes the traditional English set up of a club, then fine. However, GT is also old school and he didn't have a bad thing to say about Gino and the structure of our club because he saw all the good stuff that Gino was doing for us on and off the pitch. GT used his brain and eyes and actually wanted to see what was going on; Barnes just doesn't want to and that saddens me.

    "Watford unstable" ?

The uninformed opinion of the physically and financially very unstable ex player with next to no contact or insight into the club for 30 years.

Sad really but I guess he will say anything in his financial state if someone dangles a fiver

And became one of the greats of world football when he went to Liverpool. As someone who followed Digger to Liverpool you cannot imagine what affect that bloke's arrival had on the city - for example before he arrived no black kid would ever wear a football top, when he left...

We are a footnote in his history.

EDIT: I *also* think that some of Digger's reticence stems from him "just" missing the vast riches that flooded into the game and the Heysel ban missing him performing on the world stage.

I agree about the pot of gold but nobody can accuse him of not playing on the World stage when he was dismal all over the World for England, (Brazil excepted).

I think Barnes is a classic pseudointellectual. When all's said and done, he's actually not that bright. He was an awful manager that had no clue what he was doing - the fact that as a player the game came naturally to him didn't help his coaching ability at all. I believe Tranmere fans referred to him and McAteer as "dumb and dumber":D.

I entirely get why he waxes lyrical about Liverpool and his time there. What I don't get is why he isn't equally complimentary to us. Maybe he's just a bit thick as indicated above.

Watford found him (a WFC fan recommended him to the club apparently), and WFC launched his career.

GT was like an uncle to him and protected him and kept his feet on the ground when it could be so easy for him to go off the rails. (His parents in Jamaica?).

    WFC nurtured his talent.

He was an England international as a Watford player.

GT advised him that Liverpool was a good career move when it was clear we could not keep him.

So I agree with Kelso, I can't understand why he seems to be so negative towards WFC.

  33. Jossy

    Jossy Reservist

The footage of GT defending him from racial abuse whilst in the dugout (GT in the dugout, Barnes on the pitch) from a section of moronic England fans, you'd think would be a good enough reason alone for him to keep his negative WFC views to himself as a mark of respect towards GT

  34. Think I said it on here before, but when he was on the verge of signing for Liverpool, I asked a scouser what he thkught, and his reply was "No f****** n***** will ever play for Liverpool."

I often think of him, and would like to ask him how he feels that philosophy is working out.

Correct me if i'm wrong but anything negative JB has said about Watford relates to the current setup. I dont recall him saying anything against the club.. or anyone else suggesting so.. before the last few seasons.
Now when i read comments from Watford fans it sounds like he's been doing that since he left the club and i dont think that's the truth.
In past interviews he's always spoken glowingly about his time at Vicarage Road.. about the club giving him his break and especially his relationship with GT (who he saw as his second "father")

It's true he might have waxed lyrical more about his Liverpool career.. but anyone who was around in those days might forgive him for that because it was a special time. Not only was he the shining light in one of the greatest league teams of all time he was also blazing a trail for black footballers at the highest level of the game.. more so than anyone previously. Not to mention he also went through Hillsborough in his time there.

I think he subsequently saw Watford fc as the cosy small club that kick started his career and that he went on to play successfully for larger clubs on a bigger stage.
    I cant argue with that.

PS Watch this to give some insight into what JB thinks about Watford, plus what Graham Taylor thought about him..

Also watch this to hear what JB said about GT's passing..
