John Obi Mikel's transfer from Lyn to Chelsea was kind of a similar thing already, in which Chelsea paid Man Utd £12mil for them to terminate the transfer agreement they had just reached.

Anyone else have a sneaking suspicion that he will never play for us and we won't receive any money ? The good news is we can still bring Okaka back.

While they have no loyalty to Watford, would Liverpool really sour a relationship with a fellow PL club to that extent? I think we all know the answer, is yes.

If we don't let them have him, it'll be yet another sign of how Liverpool aren't given the respect they deserve.

Essentially, if what that Brazilian publication says is true, then we have to hope no club deems Joao Pedro to be worth €30m between now and September when he turns 18.

Secondly, I can't imagine Gino etc being too happy with Fluminense leaking details of the deal, again, if it's true.

@reids showed a while ago the unique structure of the deal and how we are paying them to play him. If that is what is happening, surely Gino isn't stupid enough to be paying a club for a player we may never have?

Ah Amrabat, he runs past one, he runs past two , he nutmegs a third , he crosses the ball straight to the goal keeper missing the obvious pass to every watford player waiting in the box . I miss Amrabat

Unless he continues scoring hat-tricks from now until January, I think the £20m bonus paid to Watford will put off a lot of clubs. It's a bit of a murky deal...….Brazil agents, conflicts of interests with another club and all the potential fall out that brings. Unless he's 100% worth it I think clubs would steer clear.

Don't forget Watford have already reportedly paid an advance fee of £2.5m to Fluminense, so they would also get that back. That's £22.5m going to Watford before the Brazilian club get a penny. To make it worth their while the figure Liverpool or any other club has to pay would be significantly higher than £30m......and I think that's very unlikely as there are still a lot of unknowns.

Pedro is very young, will he settle in England?, will he cut it in the Premier League? A bit like Richarlison, Watford took all the risk in introducing him. Everton knew they were going to get a player who could play in the EPL by the time they signed him.

If Liverpool came in now, they'd be taking all the risk and paying a very hefty price, bumped up by Watford's deal. It's better for them to let Watford sign him, make sure he's the real deal, then swoop in with £40m next season and sign him then.

The only thing that concerns me is if Fluminense use the £20m clause to bump to price up and Liverpool (or whoever) pay them £30m directly, but Fluminense fail to pass the money on to Watford. You do not want a club like Fluminense owing you money. The Pozzo's already know this when they sold a player to them from Udinese. They only got their money after Watford's involvement over the Richarlison transfer.

I’m fairly certain FIFA rules would prevent them being able to do what you say in the final paragraph. Watford wouldn’t have to accept that payment over stages and could just say we want it in a lump sum or we can say no deal, the player comes to us. I suspect Fluminense would have to do a deal with AN Other club to pay the release fee on their behalf and upfront.

I don't recall this ever happening. More like he'd give a foul away by holding a players shirt whilst he was in control of the ball.

It's a sliding scale, so if someone offered £40m we could have him for 20. Peneranda Isaac and Cucho all started well in Spain and then stalled. Same could happen with him but if he is as good as he looks we are talking about a player who could eventually be worth £200m. 17 year olds just dont play football like that (apart from John Barnes and a tiny group of others). I'd imagine he will have a big say in what happens. We already have a relationship with Flu and my guess is that relationship goes quite deep. We are dealing specifically with owner of Flu who no doubt has his finger in many pies. I also assume we have developed a good relationship with JP and his family who have said they previously turned down more money from Brazilian clubs out of loyalty to Fluminense. They seem like good people with their son's best interests at heart. His best option right now is spend another 18 months at Flu, 2nd best is come to watford in january. It could be a bit too soon for him to join an elite club. Lets pray we can keep hold of him.

Udinese had a similar situation a few years ago with Leandrinho, at the time extremely promising, from Ponte Preta.
They had agreed a pre-contract with the team and boy's parents when he was 16, but when he was 18 and could have a pro contract, Napoli entered with a higher wage offer (probably) and the boy refused the transfer to Udinese.
Not that he had a great career since then.
Anyway, the point is that probably the Pozzo's have learned from the experience and have added a few clauses to their typical pre-contract for under-age players, in order to have some more guarantees.
Thus (probably) the 20M£ penalty if JP doesn't sign with Watford.

I think it’s just the nature of Brazil that things leak like a sieve. So many intermediaries and agents involved. I’m not sure it really matters anyway - unless there’s a non-disclosure clause I’m sure Fluminese will be only too happy to tell other potential suitors what they need to pay to get him.

And I wouldn’t say it’s stupid to pay a club for a player we may never have. Exclusivity has a value. The €20m penalty means we’ll multiply our outlay nearly 10-fold if he doesn’t end up here. I can’t imagine there’s a scenario in which we pay the money, he doesn’t come here and we end up out of pocket.

Anyway, I still think it's a pity that Granada is no more in the Pozzo's galaxy.
The ease to have Spanish passport in 2 years of residence for latin-americans.
The fact that young players from South America could learn about European football (and more serious defenders) in a friendly environment, without language barrier.
It was a perfect "kindergarden" for the young players from overseas.
Unfortunately, it appears it was too difficult for Gino to manage THREE teams and he couldn't find an adequate person to delegate things at Granada, so he preferred to sell.

  20. The kid’s in a purple patch but there is no proof it will last. Liverpool are loaded and can afford to buy proven world class players ready for the first 11. I just don’t see it as their style. If it was a mill or 3 okay, but not when he’s going to cost them £20m plus to go into their u23s. Makes no sense.

I agree that I can't envisage him signing to another club before having joined us. It seems as if it would already take a club paying at least £30mil to stand a chance of the deal being broken and us being gazumped. That would already put him at around the 6th highest fee ever paid for a player from the Brazilian league, quite an outlay for such a young player who hasn't even got a cap at Brazil under 20 level yet. If an English club is willing to pay that for him then they might as well wait a bit longer until he's had a chance to prove himself in the Prem and then likely sign him from us for a not hugely dissimilar fee.

Another thing, JP has stated that his favourite, dream league is the PL, which limits the number of clubs which could potentially come in for him. In addition, he has already spoken to Richarlison, and although he left quickly, largely due to Marco Silva, I reckon he'd have still said positive things about the club.

My only major concern would be if/when he does sign in January, that we're hopefully in a relatively comfortable enough position in the league that we can give him plenty of game time.

I disagree with your point though about the best option being for him to spend another 18 months at Fluminense - the Brazilian league really isn't very good, and it would be better for him if he gets adjusted to the game here sooner rather than later.

Yes, their usual MO is mugging teams off by selling their unwanted youth players for eight figure sums, not signing them.

We'd have send them to Ireland, under UK law Irish nationals are not treated as foreigners. Not sure how keen JP would be to play for Shamrock Rovers til he gets an Irish passport. Can't he just marry a Hornetta? He's definitely gonna b above the income threshold.

Hopefully they have ways to encourage people not to break their deals as well. A girl I know got busted on a trumped up drugs charge in Latin America. She has 3 genuine EU passports. British Embassy did F all, left her to rot, the Italians had her out of jail in a month. Taking care of business.
