and the poppy fascists are out in force again!

There's already been three stories circulating on social media already this year..
One about an ITV news presenter refusing to wear a poppy on tv. This turned out to be a story from a couple of years ago but some people seem to think it's a good piece of propaganda that needs to be dragged out every year.
Then there was the story about Wetherspoon's having told their workers they couldnt wear poppies because it might upset the multi-cultural staff or customers. This story proved to be completely false and apparently the same thing happened last year concerning Poundland.
and today i saw a photo of a poppy seller being told to move on at Ruislip station by a (black) member of staff. Reading the comments below they ranged from "hang him in a tree" (a bit 'kkk' that one) to "pavement monkey" (by the bloke who posted the pic) and then "f'ing stinking ape"
    Charming that.

And while i'm at it are we gonna have the poppies on football shirts debate every year? It's got to the point where football clubs.. and some national associations are being forced to be seen to do the right thing. Especially as a lot of those that follow football seem to think they have a special connection to wartime remembrance. The **** they do.

It's great we have had the poppy appeal over the years to raise funds for those that have suffered through conflict.. but the increasing way it's being hijacked by those using it to promote some kind of "British-ness" is quite frankly sickening. Do they even realise that there other countries using the poppy i wonder?
Those that push this agenda often use the phase "Wear your poppy with pride"
To me, if you are using it to beat someone else with or to promote your political or nationalistic leanings, then you are a long way off wearing it with anything resembling pride.

    Thoughts?

This article that came out yesterday was food for thought.. though you'll be accused of all kinds of disloyalty to your country should you find yourself agreeing with any of it's content!

This line made me chuckle.. even though it's no laughing matter

"Reproduced posters, plastered on office walls, tell us to “Keep Calm and Carry On” as if a jammed photocopier could in any way be associated with a Heinkel bombing raid"

Anyone work in the city? You seen that chap that has a whole table full of poppies and other poppy-based merchandise? Just up from bank station? Always has hordes of people around it. Must make an absolute bomb.

That's what I don't get. Why are there all these poppy badges and broaches around now?

If you want to make a bigger donation just put some folding money in the box and grab a traditional paper poppy.

In my view there is a bit of "look at me....I obviously care a lot more than you because I've bought a metal badge" thing about it.

Pay a few quid for a metal one and it'll last a good few years before anyone looks close enough at the year to tut disapprovingly.

Haven't worn a poppy in years and won't ever wear one again. The refuse to participate in the "Show Everyone How Thoughtful I Am" Olympics.

It's a shame good intentions so frequently get hijacked by idiots.

The only thing that irritates me more than the poppy police is the white poppy crowd.

The old ‘I can’t see the point so they must do it for vanity’ argument. Maybe people put more money in for a badge than they do a paper one. Maybe the paper paupers only bung in pennies and run off before the seller realises. I don’t know. I’d say it’s about choice, which is something that people demand now.

If people really care maybe they should donate throughout the year rather than just at rememberance

So what is the point of the "choice" of different levels of poppies if it is not a display of vanity?

I respect peoples right to wear a poppy or not. I choose not to. I am involved in something that actively remembers our servicemen and women all year round, especially those who served in WW1. I feel no need to display that respect for a few weeks just to make others happy, most of whom don't give a sh1t for the rest of the year.

That good, it just didn’t read that way it in your initial post.

I suggest strapping a poppy to the grill of your car and leaving it there all year as many people do!

It's the dignity of remembering others' sacrifices that I find particularly moving.

EDIT: If you think the UK's "Poppy Madness" is bad enough then you'll really have to experience an Ozzie ANZAC day to put it in perspective: the anti-British (AKA "English") bile is jaw-dropping.

May be it's the people I mix with but I've never experienced "anti English bile" in all the 17 years, on and off, that I've lived in Sydney.

Of course the term "pommie" is used, as is "convict" going the other way. But it's nothing more than banter. If you ever get to the Ashes in Oz you will see the atmosphere is one of fun and mutual respect (at least off the pitch anyway). There is no bile.

ANZAC day is a mix of remembrance style respect in the morning and drinking and playing "two up" in the afternoon. I think the Australians have a healthy love of their nation without, in general, being aggressively nationalistic about it.

Edit: BTW I do agree that the narrative around Gallipoli in Australia is anti British establishment and clouded by myth and misinformation. It is not too different to the same criticisms of the British commanders actions on the Western Front though.

Gallipoli is important to Australia because it is the first action that they took part in as an independent nation. It was a disaster but it is seen as a key moment in the nation's history and in it becoming what it is today.

Seemed reasonable to me. I wear a metal poppy all year around b.t.w. Because it works very well pulling up the zip on the breast-pocket of my waistcoat.

Metallic poppies give more money to charity, and actually securely fasten to your clothes.

I don't really see why they still offer the old fashioned paper ones with pins. Most of them end up on the pavement.

If people want to express their ignorance by wearing a white poppy then, of course, they should be allowed to do so. Assuming all proceeds from white poppy sales go to the RBL I don't have a problem with it.

This pretty much sums it up for me:

My mum always used to take me and my brother to the local war memorial on remembrance day to observe the minutes silence. and wreath laying. No one made a fuss and some people there didn't actually have poppies on. I've always gone and drag my kids along, but it annoys me how certain people are now staring at your coat or jacket to check whether you are wearing one. The real sentiment is in danger of being lost.

Everything wrong with it is typified by those 2 vile, sectarian clubs north of the border - Celtic and Rangers - who go to extremes of massively drawing attention to not wearing one / wearing one respectively. Nothing more than a political football and a fashion accessory for them. Those who died in the trenches, shot out of the sky in the Battle of Britain or lost limbs in Iraq are the last thing on their minds.

Ahh, it's James Mclean's favourite time of the year! It was weird watching the spotty 18 year old brigade singing anti-IRA songs at WBA last month.

Am I the only one who doesn't care if someone wears a poppy or not?

Also, I've never seen anyone wear a White poppy in real life? Is it common in some areas?

Nothing quite brings out the nastiness, bigotry and recreational grieving culture of British society than this yearly poppy farce. A real shame really given what Remembrance Sunday was supposed to represent before it was hijacked by nationalists and people who need to show everyone else that they care more than they do.

A mate told me today he hates white poppies and this is why:

"The white poppy really boils my piss tbh and for two reasons.

The first is, the money goes to a political organisation and none of it goes to charity. The RBL does a lot of great work helping to support veterans that struggle to make ends meet including some of the homeless vets.

The second point is, this organisation is piggybacking a day of remembrance there for everyone to remember the sacrifice the people of the world made in the name of freedom. These ****s are using that to push their political agenda whilst at the same time, taking money from the RBL and vets that need their help.

It's ******* shameful and they should be publicly called out for it!"

Cant say I disagree with any of that.... as long as what he says is accurate I can only echo is thoughts tbh.
