    Right, a few things here..

    1. Since when has this become such a massive thing?

    2. I work in a company that is is a good 65/35 women to men, and nearly everyone who has talked about this celebratory day has never mentioned anything about women's right, suffragettes, feminism etc. Doesn't add up to me.

    Anyone else had similar experiences?

Why does it bother you? Don't hear Jesus mentioned too often at Christmas either.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. It doesn't bother me, I just find it a bit odd how so many people I know that have previously never expressed an interest in fighting for women's rights were all posting about it on social media yesterday. It just struck me as jumping on the bandwagon somewhat, though maybe I'm alone here.

I think it's a great idea. Nothing better than singling out people that we'd normally be castigated for even thinking about treating differently, and treating them differently.

I for one have been saving up my ironing for them for this day, for over a month.

From what I saw, all state enterprises and most private companies made the day a 3/4 day - so the women could go home to prepare tea early in order for them to attend the evening's celebrations (generally free/exceptionally cheap concerts/theatre productions).

Also Vilnius's main arbortion centre was the "kovo a*tuntos moterio klinika" or Match 8th Women's Clinic.

We have to be seen to be caring these. Caring isn't enough anymore you have to be SEEN doing it. If you arent seen then it obviously means you don't care.

I saw so much stuff yesterday about equal pay for women and while that is of course how it should be people seem to be missing the point that there has been a law on equal pay in the UK since 1970. A few CARING facebook posts and suddenly men are paid more for doing the same job.
I am sure a lot of people who make it known they care about such issues dont even bother to look up the facts. If it makes them look caring then its done it's job.

Seems odd to have such a day. Not really sure what it's purpose is.
A lot is made of the gender pay gap, and there clearly is one. Without doubt men and women performing the same role with similar experience should be paid the same and that is set in law. But women who take time out to look after the children will struggle to have achieved the same experience and career progression at the age of 40/45 and be more inclined to take part time and more flexible roles to fit around children's schooling. Until the ratios of men/women taking those career breaks are split 50/50, men will always on average be paid more.
I'm not sure that will be achieved anytime soon given in many families men still see their roles as the prime bread winner and women see their prime role as looking after their kids.
I think we need an international mens day to highlight the incredible pressures men are under to provide for their families in a hostile employment market. Maybe this is why men's life expectancy is about 4 years less than for women ?

I don’t think ‘bandwagon’ is the right word for most people. It’s a day that reminds women of what they have achieved, how far women across the world still have to go (millions still don’t get an education simply because they are girls) and how they achieve things better when they stick together.

I do find it nauseating though that super wealthy women and directors get to ra ra up the sisterhood in what is only a day off from exploiting the living daylights out of other women 364 days each year.

Although there are more women in the board room it’s still mostly other men making it hostile. It’s mostly men dying for the military, but it’s other men sending them to the front.

This is why we shouldn’t fear feminism. The order it is rallying against isn’t great for most men either.

You should try visiting Scandinavia. In my experience women's rights have progressed so far here that they are now taking the dominant role.. and often with a more hostile attitude. No doubt making up for centuries of male domination!

If Scandinavia is an indication of what future sexual equality will be like i'd say turn back now lads we're screwed :(

And yet, no other thread about blacks or gays say, would receive the same dismissive humour as one about women. We still have a long way to go.

True that. There are areas where male attitudes towards women could improve. There certainly remains some blatant sexism in this world from what i see on social media etc.

But.. should we count "dismissive humour" in the same category as the more blatant stuff? I mean for starters i see women doing the same thing all the time.. for instance just the other day there was a Nat Geo post about a female snake that kills the male after mating. There were thousands of women commenting how this was a great idea and how they don't need men for anything other than sex.. "You go girl!" Yet there wasnt anyone there suggesting their attitude was in anyway sexist but is it in anyway different to the remarks on this thread.. Surely it cuts both ways?

For me it's ok if these things are done.. and understood.. in a humorous way. Irish jokes.. bring em on. Jokes about stiff upper lip Englishmen keeping their socks on in bed..bring em on.
Take my comment earlier about patting women on the bum for instance.. it came from a knowing place. It was an absurd remark which people are supposed to recognise as such. I didnt mean that i think it should be done!

For me the subject of sexual equality is the same as we going with race relations. Call out everything as prejudice.. remove all the humour.. and you end up creating attitudes rather than amending them.

The gap in life expectancy between the genders has, I believe, been falling over the last decade, co incident with the reduced dependence of many households on a single male wage.

While I generally agree with your sentiment your scenario needs a line on which one side sexist/racist/stereotypical humour is acceptable and on the other it is not. Who gets to draw the line, and where? Is Jim Davidson's and Bernard Manning's humour going to be fine again?

Hopefully no-one gets to draw the line on humour/distaste on the behalf of us all. Each and every one of us is quite capable of setting our own limits of acceptability.

Yeah but humour doesn't involve just you or any one individual does it. It needs at least two people for it to work and just because one person finds the denegration of others funny doesn't mean anybody else has to.

You are right. They can find it not funny, and furthermore, they can tell the person why if they want to.

It is just social interaction. If someone tells a "joke" to a group of people, or at a meeting/presentation, and only one person laughs, then they feel stupid and dont tell it again. That is the best way to change peoples attitudes.
