Shirley they've moved on from those sort of attitudes...

  2. You're probably right - even though his serving jail time never stopped the FA suits selecting Tony Adams. Getting caught behind the wheel of a car whilst being as pissed as a parrot is possibly a badge of honour amongst that lot.

Chalobah back in the squad but still no Hughes. Gotta sting a bit for him given how much they’ve both played this season....

Sancho, Mount, Maddison and Winks all included too.

Desperate for a creative midfielder it seems.

As good as Mount and Sancho are, I can’t help but think they would be better suited in and around the U-21’s for a bit first. Really am quite surprised Hughes has been overlooked especially for Mason Mount. Doesn’t send a good message out to Will really that one.

'I'm a big fan of Will Hughes but he fits more with Watford's style of play and that's not the way that we are looking to play.

Nate hasn't started a game for Watford so far this season so isn't infected by their rough and tumble style so it's a good chance to take a look at him and convince him to move to a better club.'

Noy really going to see the best of most of these kids against Spain and Croatia away.

Bit different to looking good against Rotherham and Wigan!

It will be Dier and Henderson in midfield.

Chalobah must be so highly rated and I'd feel disappointed for Hughes .

None of these players will play apart from an odd sub appearance for 5 minutes when we're 2-0 down to Spain/Croatia.

    That's just plain ridiculous.

Yes it's good that obvious ones like Maddison are in but Chalobah isn't even first choice here. So he finally gets a bit of fitness then off with a different squad and staff? If he gets injured again... then what? Bad luck? ****ing hell Southgate. Even Deeney makes more sense than Chalobah.

I see Jadon Sancho has been given a call-up. What's the likelihood that any of the pundits or commentators mention that he was in our academy until EPPP paved way for him to be taken by City?

I can see both sides of it. Southgate has defended calling up Chalobah by saying we are now in an age where players with known quality have to be called up regardless of minutes. With the limited pool of talent available, I can kinda understand that.

Personally I think Sancho and Mount are in there to train with the squad - I’d be very surprised if either make their debuts. I think they’d be better off in the U-21’s to get a better grounding of International football but I struggle to think of many players outside of Hughes who are unlucky to miss out at their expense.

I like what Southgate is doing with youth and why not look at them when the games are meaningless as opposed to the later qualifying games.

But I repeat, and I don’t just say this as a Watford fan, the non-selection of Hughes is baffling given the increased squad size and inclusion of Mount - who has never played PL football, had one season at Vitesse, minimal youth caps and has looked good against Reading and Brentford. Hughes has looked outstanding against some of the best midfields the PL has to offer, has PL experience, multiple youth caps and Southgate knows his qualities from that youth set-up. It’s baffling.

Play for someone other than watford. I guess "he's ok for a team like Watford". Chalo escapes that ban as he used to play for Chelsea, a proper team.

An absolute travesty of a decision by the FA. The EPPP essentially sidelined our academy for quite a few years. Ironic really that Sancho had to leave City and move to Dortmund before he was able to achieve his obvious potential not quite what the sweet FA had in mind.

It was a travesty. Under these rules there's virtually no point in any club outside of the top six having an academy. When you get a "special talent" come along, they'll be hoovered up for next to nothing by one of the big boys.

The FA make a big thing about football is for everyone and want a level playing field, then these rules come along that will only ever benefit the top sides. It doesn't even benefit the young player as they will never break into the first team of these sides. Sancho had to go to Germany and Chalobah had to sign for us, for example, before they ever got regular first team football.

It just gives an unfair monopoly for the bigger sides to sign up as much talent as they like on the cheap. I would say it's one of the unfairest rules in English football, bordering on the corrupt.

Outraged on Hughes’ behalf. Don’t know what he has to do to get a call-up.

Barkley’s barely played for 2 years. Winks only features rarely for Spurs.
Chalobah - as good as we know he is - has been injured for a year and barely played.
Dier has been dropped by Spurs and looked lost in midfield in the WC.
And the strangest decision of the lot, Mount, who plays in the championship?! I don’t understand that at all. Sure the lad looks promising but what has our national team come to if half a dozen ‘promising’ games in the 2nd tear of English football earn you a call-up. Baffling.

Southgate is a weak manager who has favourites, both players & clubs.

Youth is an ideal policy as you can't be sacked for picking the future, at least until an abysmal run in competitive matches.

I would rather have Southgate there & Javi here, rather than vice versa, & I settle for that.

    Nothing new to add but

Challobah is absoloute quality and with a few more games this season will deserve an England place, however Hughes is match fit, talented , hard working, the only reason I can see for not playing him is he might embarrass the other work shy bastards by actually giving a toss if England win or loose

Because he's on loan from Chelsea. He's having a good season but if he was on loan from a team outside the top 6 he wouldnt be anywhere near the national team.

Its a real disappointment actually that Southgate has had his contract extended. It would be nice if just once England had a manager who picked players based on fitness and form rather than what club they play for or for being one of their favourites. What would be totally refreshing is seeing a manager actually use the friendlies to try out players like Hughes or Shelvey who are in form but normally wouldnt be picked - it would certainly be more benefical than the team we saw against switzerland

Not too pleased with Southgate's decision to leave Will Hughes out of the squad. I am also not convinced that Chalobah should be included at this present time. Although I am happy for Chalobah, I think Southgate is sending out the wrong message by not picking players on current form. I do admire what Southgate is trying to achieve with his youth policy. Developing a young talented squad whilst trying to play attractive football which could potentially be ready to challenge for a major tournament in several years down the line sounds like every England fans dream. Whilst I think it is the right approach to take, I don't however think it is being implemented correctly. There doesn't seem to be an easier time for a young talented player to get in the England squad. This is what makes the Hughes exclusion an odd decision considering that he ticks most of Southgate's boxes. He is relatively young, talented, hardworking and has a 'good character'.

Not picking Shelvey for the World Cup squad was a mistake. He is not world class but neither are most of the England squad. Last season he was in superb form and controlling matches with his dynamic and precise passing. As we know he wasn't picked not because of his form or talent but for his 'poor character'. Southgate's comments on Deeney and indirectly on Watford I found to be disrespectful. It seems we are still being tarnished with the plucky long-ball Watford tag. Not that I really care what the media or football fans in general think of Watford but it shouldn't have an impact of good English players we have being denied an opportunity to be called up tot he England squad. Yes Chalobah has been called up but it does seem ironic considering that he has hardly played for us!

On talent, Southgate should be ghosting Jenas on MotD2, filling in for those weekends when Jermaine was away playing golf with Gary in the Algarve.

His agent would be keeping a weather eye on the health of Thompson & McInally so as to slot Gareth in seamlessly as one of the next generation of Jeff’s Boys.

The answer is often the simplest one. Southgate is an idiot riding the wave of a World Cup which opened up for him where we lost three times to decent sides. The bloke hasn’t got a clue.

I'd be surprised if the pundits know he was on the books at Watford.

They'll probably refer to him as a City youth player, criticise City for not backing their youth, then spend 15 minutes discussing whether Foden should have been called up because he shares a locker with David Silva.
