So from yesterday's match day squad, who will be involved in the internationals ? Only Cathcart, Kabs and Sema ?

The rest get a break and more time with Javi whilst hopefully Man U have shedloads away and playing / picking up knocks. And Rashford suspended.

Kabasele didn't make the Belgian squad... so looks like almost everyone will be around.

Lallana droped out of England squad and Southgate shows his true colours by picking a goalkeeper to replace him. Hughes would of been the ideal replacement

That's great news. He's the player in the squad who would give me the most concern if they were to get injured.

(Though maybe Belgium's training facilities are a safer place than ours?)

I would have thought he'd have been keen on Hughes with his U21 links. Chalobah was in the squad this time last year despite only having a handful of Premier League appearances. I'm sure a call-up for Hughes is just around the corner

I don't rate Southgate, he may of got us to the semi finals but the way we got there I believe many coaches in the game would of been able to do that. For me he just does what the papers say. Fair play he has got the media and support on his side and in that role is nothing to be knocked. I don't entirely agree with this international break, not cos we're doing well as a club and it may hamper our achievements or the fact we've just come from a World Cup but what's the point in it? Other players are dropping out now I read Sterling may of dropped out, why not just pick an entire squad of England b's give them a chance. Hughes Deeney from us, Mee Burnley Barkley Chelsea Wiltshire west ham sancho dortmund lookman Everton to name a few that have been getting game time already for their clubs and then maybe some of the squad players that were at the World Cup but never featured as much over in Russia. Let's have a look at the rest make it interesting

He really devizes opinions. Personally, I think he's always been hugely overrated and has too much of a chippenham on his shoulder.

The reality is Livermore is above Hughes and Chalobah in the pecking order and Defoe above Deeney. Its a messed up world we live in....

Southgate was asked about Deeney recently - I'm paraphrasing, but he said that Deeney was good for Watford and the style that they play, but that isn't the way he wants England to play.

Hope we keep as many of our players away from the International scene for as long as possible, we seem to have players not getting injured every 5 minutes, rather keep it that way. Hughes and Chalobah playing for England and doing well would probably see other teams come in for them.

    I read that as well.

Not sure about deeney for England, on one hand at his best I think he could scare the living daylights out of foreign defenders , but on the other not sure I would want to see him called up and then sit on the bench and never get a chance to play.

Think in his day he could have done well for England

Was Cathcart poor, in a poor position or playing in a poor system?

Chris Waddle on 5 Live or whatever says, 'Can Gareth Southgate do something that Spain might not like?

England are trying to play like them but you can't play football like that against Spain - they have to try something else.'

I could think of someone but of course, he fits Watford's style of play not England.

Meanwhile, Eric 'can't get in the Spurs team' Dier comes on for Jordan Henderson.

Not to worry - in future England squads, we might have Callum Wilson on the bench in order to bring on and win us a penalty.

England suffering 3 consecutive defeats - first time since Euro 88. Great to see Southgate putting his mark on the team.

On current form, Watford would have beaten England tonight. The spuds lot even less effective than they were on Sunday.

England played well at times, but just fell short. Spain had too much quality for them overall. Your goal should have stood at the end though. We got away with one there.

Where was VAR when we needed it? - showed how protected goalkeepers are though.

England had the chances to get something but you felt were a class apart - usual story then!

Guess Luke Shaw won't be playing next week (nor will Rashford of course)

    Always loved Holebas.

Always thought Garith is totally meh.

Zero interest in Man U B team.

Unfortunate that the fat boy is out. Ash was a beast against us last season.

Ben Chilwell and Demarai Grey added to the squad for the Switzerland friendly. Almost like they're trying to shift tickets ahead of the game which is coincidentally taking place at the King Power.

So if Deeney was to score 20 PL goals this season, Southgate still wouldn’t call him up?

Deeney's age is against him now. If he was ever going to play for England it would have happened a few years ago. Irrespective of how he performs this season he will be knocking on 32 for the Euro 2020 finals and 34½ by the time Qatar 2022 starts.

I tend to agree. Although it was said by Vardy that Southgate had attempted to change his mind about making himself unavailable. And they are similar ages.

But Deeney’s best chance was under Hodgson in the ‘Ighalo’ season.

Furthermore, even though it was some time ago, I'm sure that Deeney's previous stay at Her Majesty's pleasure precluded any selection by those within the FA.
