Still miffed he lost the '72 Wimbledon final to Stan Smith I think!

Mind you Stan still looks dazed by it,bit like this thread!

    Are we down yet?

Someone mentioned it was "sport*ing bet" on a thread the other day. Other places aren't bothering to quote as far as I know.

I didn't back them at 5000-1, but I did back them in November for a top four finish, and did extremely well out of it.

Being long odds just shows people think it's unlikely. Doesn't mean anything more than that and it certainly doesn't mean it won't happen. Bookies only reflect people's opinion. If someone lumped £1,000,000 on Watford going down, then their odds would dramatically reduce, just so they can cover themselves.

What would the odds be on Palace picking up 9 points from Chelsea away, Arsenal home and Liverpool away I wonder? Massive I would say, but it happened.

Look at Stoke. Mid-table and no one would consider them in trouble. However, I have a sneaky feeling on them as well. I think they will be a lot closer to the drop than people think, and they could still be in danger come the last day.

If Hull and Swansea close that small gap, as I expect them to do, it will bring all those mid-table "safe" sides into the mix. I honestly believe there could be several sides playing for survival on the last day. It could be one of the craziest final days ever.

Guess it depends if you think Swansea are more likely to beat Man U away and Everton at home than us picking up even a point against Liverpool at home or Leicester away for example?

I say beat because even drawing those 2 games (and winning the other 2) means they cannot catch us...and that is without us picking up any points at all!

For what its worth I do think we will finish about 15-16th....

I don't think Swansea will beat United, but United's track record for drawing against inferior sides this season at Old Trafford is extraordinary. Swansea will certainly go there thinking they could nick a point.

If they do that, then there's every reason to expect that new found confidence will inspire them to a victory over Everton. Everton are not that great on the road. Their strength is at home. Everton's entire away record is a follows (most recent result at the end). W-W-L-D-L-L-L-L-W-D-W-D-D-L-L-D-D. You see they've only won twice since the first two away games of the season.

I would say we only need 1 more points though, but I cannot see us getting it.

Didn't a 100-1 horse win the Grand National in 2009?

The point is, odds are only being used as a comfort to your argument. It doesn't mean anything really. It's only emphasising probability.

I've said all along is that there is a strong probability we'll be ok, but it's not as "crazy" as many people think we could still be in trouble. We have to be careful and not take things for granted.

If I was convinced we could pick up points between now and the end of the season then I'd be confident, but seeing as though I think we'll lose the lot, it makes us still vulnerable.

I'm reluctant to get drawn into this but:

after the Swansea game, HB1, you said (post 109):

    "We are staying up now".

You also used words/phrases such as 'survived', 'dodged a bullet' and 'limped over the line'.

You have been consistent in your view that we won't get any more points (including the Hull game), but you have lost your certainty in us staying up. Why? What has changed? Not our defeat at Hull because you predicted that. So did you not expect Swansea to beat Stoke?

I wrote that straight after the game, more out of relief than anything else. I think got a bit carried away with the win and didn't give myself enough time to reflect properly. What I should have said was "We are probably staying up now".

I have said even on this thread, that the probability of staying up is strong, but all I'm saying is, it's not a done deal as many would think.

The manner of defeat at Hull has really made me think we're now a sitting duck of a side. Unable to do anything more other than hope others around us fail. When you are in that situation, adversity tends to crap on you.

Why is it so important to you HB1 to keep banging on about the tiniest remote possibility of relegation. It is not going to happen and you know it - so forget it.

Tell us what you think going forward in the Premiership next year. With Mazz?; without Mazz ? I tell you what - if we get relegated I will eat the biggest portion of humble pie you have ever seen. Until then let's talk about the real world where we stay up.

If you think we are totally safe, yes. Whether that's the majority of fans I do not know.

You can say we are probably safe, virtually safe, but not categorically or totally safe. It's not like Swansea have to win 7 games 5-0 or anything as crazy as that. The scenario of us getting sucked in, even at this stage, is still plausible considering who our next 5 opponents are.

HB1 may have some valid points, but as has been said, destroys match day threads by ignoring several strong points by others, and choosing easier battles.

It's just very, very boring, and makes me a lot more reluctant to come onto the site, because there is no "good debate" it's a contest of who thinks they can shout the loudest.

We could win the league and HB1 would still think we're very likely to go down that same season.

Why is it destroyed? All posts I make are on football matters. I've debated every question that's put to me in a civil manner, as I always do. If someone is being a **** then I have the right to defend myself, but I'm never the aggressor.

In all of this, is just football fans talking about football things. Isn't this what a forum is all about?

I've acknowledged lots of points people have made along the way as well. The only person who's been out of order is BRLT, everyone else on here has contributed well.

I just don't get it. For the most part, these are not name calling fights, it's a strong debate. Why is that bad?

I just think people see a thread where I've taken an active part and don't like it. I've no idea why people should dislike an active participant as much.

I get a tonne of abuse on here, yet just get on with it. I don't whinge about it, I just give it back from where it came. There's nothing wrong with that.

I will say to anyone that does not like my posts. PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR IGNORE LIST. That way your eyes will never be offended by one of my posts in future........it's a very easy solution.

Guess it's like people saying the title race is still open if Chelsea lose a few games and Spurs win more.

The former probably won't happen but never be sure..

I think it's the other way round, that you've got carried away with the defeat and the fear of going down.

Obviously we could go down but to say people are burying their heads in the sand for saying it's highly unlikely isn't fair.

Hull have been great at home, I thought we'd get a draw and it feels to me that whilst we didn't play well we should have got the first goal (which you admitted).

I agree it's unlikely we'll get many more points but just think how much worse things would be if we'd only drawn with Sunderland, lost to West Brom and drawn to Swansea. Then you'd be well within your rights to be concerned.

We are fine, it won't be due to us but the fact Swansea and or Hull won't overtake us.

Swansea beat Stoke, do you think they're in a relegation battle like us?

Over the past months I've read a lot of your posts and the responses to them. I must say that I found some of the replies quite vitriolic and people just taking exception to what you say, because it's you. In others, I think they raise valid points and you just say the same things, almost believing what you say to be 'fact' rather than 'opinion'. Pretty much the same as anyone else on here...some people agree with what is said, some don't...

But I must say, the tone of your most recent posts almost comes across like you want us to get relegated? Talking about putting money on it etc etc? You only need to say once that we may not pick up another point and could be in trouble but you seem to relentlessly keep stating as such and I think that is a major part of people getting frustrated with your most recent contributions.

I don't mind HB1's views, but what I find annoying is that he seemingly always wants to have the last word rather than accepting people have other views and move on. Because of this most matchday threads are twice as long as they need be.

Why do you keep stating the obvious but make it sound like you have just discovered the secret of fire ? I don't think many on here have a problem with what you say, but your supercilious tone of voice really grates, which is the main reason you keep getting flak. Wind your neck in.

I'm finding all the talk of us not being safe a bit silly really. The facts are that we are 10th, have 40 points and whilst Hull's home form is imperious, their away form certainly is not. And Swansea would need to string a set of wins together that they have not managed all season. And then there is also a whole load of teams in between us and those 2 teams that are in more trouble than us. We also have a game or two in hand on some.

Are we playing well? No. Are there some issues behind the scenes? Maybe. Will we pick up another point? Possibly not. But we are in better or similar form to most around us over the past 6 games, even if performances don't match the results sometimes.

Maybe not mathematically, but WE ARE SAFE.
