I hope Jeremy Corbyn hasnt sold out.

I mean it wasnt so long ago he was happy playing smaller festivals like Wirral Live and now all of a sudden he's expecting to play the biggest stages.
    What's next?
A V2018 appearance as Corbyn ft May?

It isn't weird at all. Usually I'm the same, I rarely notice someone's colour until it is pointed out to me or it becomes an issue.

For example, Clive thinks criticism of Dianne Abbott was because she is black, whilst those criticising her just did it because she is ****ing useless.

Too often do-gooders look for "'isms " and find something to moan about when even the "victims" havn't even noticed anything wrong - and then assume they can complain or protest on the "victims" behalf as well.

I agree the festival has been pushed in that direction. But I disagree that this is a real problem. There are plenty of other festivals around to cater for all ages, tastes, classes, races etc. I see no reason why middle-aged, well-heeled white people shouldn't enjoy themselves.

As for the second paragraph: does anybody claim Glastonbury is "cutting edge"? The very fact it has blanket coverage on the Beeb suggests not.

<declares conflict of interest> I went to see Kraftwerk last weekend. They were feckin' fantastic.

He lives in Somerset and yet doesn't notice if someone is black? Per-lease?

You'll all be telling us next that Royal Ascot is white and arabian only because it's just not everyone else's thing.

Somebody has definitely thought about the audience that they want to attract but it's based on the money that particular audience will spend and the amount of money the organisers desire. I don't think that race comes into it, I'm sure the oraganisers would gladly extract money from anybody's pocket who is desperate enough to spend it. They have just identified that the grey and balding mid-life-crisis bunch will spend the most.

It isn't just the poor that this has happened to. Look at how Royal Ascot has been rebranded over the last 15 years - no longer is it solely for the traditional upper class client. In the pursuit of money they have identified a target audience who have little idea of how to behave, who guzzle champagne from plastic beakers and are loud-mouthed fighting gorillas, the men are even worse. Their behaviour is tolerated because they spend a sh1t load of money.

I can't but I believe that's where you have said you live. It doesn't mean you've joined the Klan if you notice someone's colour.

Because it's obviously not true and an odd thing to say in the context of the thread. It's not racist to notice someone's colour.

I'm not 'obsessed' by it. Someone wrote it, I replied.

You seem obsessed with the idea that anyone who does is a horrible liberal racist. Clive? Really?

I think it's racist to have an absence of certain people and to not notice.

  18. Stevohorn

    Stevohorn Watching Grass Grow

I believe when people say they "dont notice people's skin colour" they mean it metaphorically.
They really mean that they wont judge anyone simply by the colour of their skin.

Well unless they are blind! or colour blind? Then they could mean it literally.

I don't see Clive as a liberal racist at all , however eloquently put the original post was frankly ridiculous, also I can see the argument in terms of expense of getting into concerts, you clearly are, and I see nothing wrong with La Temp's response, in fact that's something we should all aspire to, including yourself.

Clive is naughty to racialise. It's generally not helpful and if people aren't hurting others what business is it etc. But you also can't escape how things actually are rather than the fantasy that we don't notice anyone's colour and no one is disadvantaged by it.

Frankly if it's me you think is a liberal racist that's up to you, but you are country miles off being correct.

Shame he couldn't attend an Armed forces services event in the country somewhere instead. Though he only praises them when he needs to score a cheap dig.

Addressing your last point, of course I don't. (I was referring to obsessed by it, rather than a liberal racist).

I agree with the first points. I think in this case it wouldn't have bothered or even crossed most people's mind how ethnically diverse Glastonbury was, there are admittedly financial, but no intended racial barriers to attending the event, and as such see no problem with it, the notion there is any vague conspiracy to prevent or dissuade diversity seems to me ridiculous.

You're very selective with the acts you name, have you looked at the line-up?
    http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/line-up/line-up-2017/?stage

I'd estimate 95% of those aren't household names, with plenty of cutting edge musicians and bands making their names. Obviously there are a few oldies thrown in there too, and the headliners I'm not overwhelmed by (Radiohead were awful, Foo Fighters is 15 years late, Ed Sheeran has been overplayed to the point that he annoys me now). The issue is that BBC tend to show the acts with the biggest following, and generally that means bands that have been around for ages - it's all about viewing figures.

Jezza was wearing a Cuban Guayateca shirt similar to this one! I've got five of these myself.

Note that it was not a common or garden Guayabera either - It was an elegant two pocket Guayateca variation. As Cuban as the palm trees that shirt is. It's the official Cuban government-sanctioned "formal dress garment" and has HUGE political significance.

    As Wikipedia notes:

"Guayaberas have been worn extensively by a number of Latin American political leaders, including César Chávez, Carlos Prío Socarrás, and Fidel Castro.[7] This is often interpreted as a sign of the wearer's affiliation with populist political positions."

An obvious and blatant "come and get me" call from Corbyn to the Central Committee in Havana I reckon.

Hopefully though they'll pass on to Jezza what every Guayabera wearer knows - restrained gestures of solidarity only after a long, hot, sweaty oration to the masses.

Do not lift your arms up above your head.

It's appallingly middle class, decadent and getting-on-a-bit to own five shirts. Nobody under the age of 50 has got more than three ...

Two of them were Cuban rations issue. You had to go to a special house on Calle Laparilla and wait for hours and hours to get measured and fitted out. You get a full set of clothes, including underwear, but there is the possibility of doing exchanges of parts with comrades.

    This is Lamparilla

Two more were gifts - one from the mother-in-law and another from a tourist who visited. The latter has the Havana Club logo on the breast pocket.

The final one though, I must admit, was purchased in a capitalistic manner from e-bay and it was vanity as I didn't really need it because I have four already. But it was a black on black one and I didn't have one of those.
