I must admit I'm quite keen on seeing his Dunkirk film...

Maybe it's easier to say your top film in each genre?

    Action - Leon
Adventure - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Comedy - Ferris Bueller's Day off
    Crime - The Italian Job
    Drama - Awakenings
Horror - Not a fan of the genre
Musical - Again not really a fan
SciFi - Star Wars A New Hope

That's why I chose "Cloud Atlas" - it encompasses so many genres. There are lots of rumours flying about concerning the release of a 5 hour-ish director's cut being released this year.

'In the Heat of the Night' not mentioned once, are we all racist?

Impossible to restrict to one film; impossible to compare genres. Alphabetical short list of the top 20 (these are today's choices - tomorrow's would almost certainly be different).

    Airplane
    A night at the opera
    The American President
    Apollo 13
    Casablanca
    The Dish
    ET - the Extra Terrestrial
    The Godfather
    Gregory's Girl
    Grosse Pointe Blank
In the Heat of the Night
    It's a wonderful life
    The Jungle Book (cartoon version)
    LA Confidential
    The Last Boy Scout
    The Magnificent Seven
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Sneakers
    The Sting
    12 Angry Men

    Film series :-

    Bourne series
    Die Hard series
    Harry Potter series
    Indiana Jones series
    Lethal Weapon series

We have similar favourites other than Denzil Washington films which I generally can't stand.

I'd add a few more like a couple of the TNG films, a couple of trek OS films and GOTG 1.
