As a youngster one of my best friends was a Luton fan. He started because Luton visited our local team in Finland; it must have been 1981. I started my supporting career back in 1983 and it took us some time, to find out about the warm relationship between our teams. We used to travel a lot to England with other friends all supporting they own teams. And it was absolutely fantastic to return back to London when everyone had visited their own game. It was good banter talking about games and it has always been. Even with this one Hatter.

The weirdest thing is that his both sons are now keen Luton supporters themselves. I also find it amazing, that how an earth it can be so, that we began supporting two smal teams, who happen to have such a hatred between them. And it all happens in Finland.

I can`t hate anyone supporting his own team with passion.

I dated one for a couple of years. She actually came to a few Watford games. It really didn't end well. Not well at all.

I escaped to the safety of a Watford fan immediately after. She ended up being even worse.

How did you become a Watford fan in Finland? Family links, or similar to your L*ton mate?

Always found it weird how few people from Luton support the team. It's the 21st biggest town/city in England with double the population of Watford yet the people have little loyalty to their team. We get attendances that are around 15-20% of the population of Watford with Luton it's less than 5%. I guess they recognise a pile of shyte when they see it.

Have grown up in central Bedfordshire, 90% of the people I know either support them or have a slight affinity for them, which is horrendous, but fortunately the introduction of hand sanitiser everywhere makes me feel a bit cleaner around them. Rarely have any issues, everybody knows I’m Watford and have a good friendly chat with them about it whether I’m at work, down the pub etc. Will certainly make for an interesting couple of weeks next season, if we lose I might go into hibernation for a bit. If we win, my smug grin will be seen a mile off.

Most of them are decent and I have met a few. Banter of course but unfortunately some to become very tribal and think it is a badge of honour to knock someone about because they happen to support their rival. Neanderthals and we do have them following both teams.

There used to be certainly looking at the history books a far more friendly rivalry between the two towns such as during the war who could raise more money to purchase a Spitfire. GT himself contributed to a Save Luton Town campaign and he did banter about them as well knowing the rivalry better than anyone but on a friendly level. He and Pleat were very good friends indeed and Pleat was very affected by his passing and spoke glowingly about the man in the wake of his passing.

U know what I mean WTW. Attendance : Town size ratio. Luton's is a farce. Watford's is proud, majestic and noble.

When my parents split up, I moved with my Mum to Watford & my Dad ended up in Bedford. His son by his 2nd wife, so my half-brother, has always been a scum fan, whilst my half-sister married one...she’s now divorced him, but I’ve never really had a good relationship with my half-brother...not that we saw much of each other after I was 11.
The team manager of my son’s youth team in Northampton was also a scummer & he was a good bloke.

It's hard to tell what the town population really is: a lot of what most of us would consider "Watford" is outside the actual Watford borough, making up big parts of Three Rivers, Dacorum, Hertsmere and even St Albans.

Typical glory hunter! They had finished second but I was not actually following English football that much. But I started to do some football pools and they showed first division on tv on saturdaays. I also played football with friends who were more active buying Shoot and Match magazines and we were listening games also on BBC. There was a picture of Barnes in one of those and when someone asked who do I support I replied Watford. I must say that I don`t count myself gloryhunter because I didn`t understand then what they had achieved. That is my story. We actually published a fanzine over here which included Watford, Luton and Ipswich! We even had readers... But as I mentioned I had no idea in the beginning what is between us and them.

Only l*t*n fans I have known of in Hemel are one who was dad of someone in my class in primary school. And one who was in my brothers year at school who bullied my brother. I was not happy when I found out he was one bullying him. Didn't do anything to him just scared him a bit. Didn't see him ever again after that lol

Jimmy the Scottish bloke who owned the off licence in Bushey Mill Lane near the Otter pub in the mid 80s was a scummer but a very good bloke as he used to always serve me even though he knew darn well I was under age.
Back in the BWL days myself, Round the Corner and Watford Al invited Hats Up down to West Herts and fair play to him he did turn up and was a very nice bloke and bought us all GOOD beers ATAF

I voted no in the end, but I did hover. If there was a 'maybe' option I might have gone for that.

The three I came across all worked on the railway. One I only knew from afar, but he seemed like a bit of a curly headedtwat. Another one was a bland youngish lad without any personality.

The last one though was a punk girl who came and joined us. Because there weren't many laydee railwaymen working 3 shifts round, she was subjected to a lot of unwanted greasy old man attention and I thought she handled the lecherous old gits quite admirably. It also cannot be denied that she took her place on the barricades in times of BR strife. She was also reasonably sound on the anti-Nazi front and was involved in fighting against their awful MP of the time - John "sieg heil" Carlisle.

    However.

As others have pointed out, deep down a scummer is always a scummer and that rotten, twisted, stinking character will always surface in the end.

She was liked by the management and shot up the promotions to be some sort of grand manageress. All the punk clothes and the nose ring disappeared and the power dressing pinstripes started creeping in. News arrives of yet another promotion. This time away from Euston, maybe even to the BR board or something. Super high executive lady round the top table now.

Meanwhile her former comrades were still where she had left us. We had some sort of dispute going on and had righteously walked out. Can't remember what it was about now, but it was fully justified. We were unanimous and 100% everybody out. As we're leaving who is coming the other way. Only bloody Ms Shatter looking all sheepish because she's coming to SCAB on us. Her management mates have sent her down because she knows our job.

Some of the boys got angry, but I just said look you're going next week. As it is, we think well of you. Do you want us all to remember you as a scab who sold us out? Why are you doing it? If you're short of money we'll have a collection for you (the boys all started getting money out and trying to give it to her).

Well I am pleased to say that she cracked and in the end did not scab and went back and told her management mates she wouldn't do it. So in the end she did the right thing. Which I think shows that, in the end, there's hope for even the most horribleist of scummers what repents.

Unfortunately I have relatives who follow Bedfordshire Rovers.
They are alright. So are the guys I work with who suffer from the
same affliction. Years ago I worked in High Town Luton for about
9/10 months . It was rammed full of Luton yobs . One was a complete
and utter canut called Brendan. Top dog apparently .

When I was young I went on holiday with my family from their airport with a Watford shirt on. Needless to say I was given the whole full body search. I did ask for it, but I did take time to remind them about their non-league status at the time, so worth it?

Ex mate of mine, i knew he was a scummer, but both our kids were in same club so it was just banter. He has a season ticket for them. One xmas do, his mrs who was pissed tells me that he used to support the horns when he was growing up & even had a s.t. for us!!
    Unbelievable!
I let him know what i thought & the **** just had a massive go at his mrs in public saying he told her never ever to tell me tha . Grade 1 scummer

That is literally unbelievable. No football fan would ever do that. Even in circumstances where you moved to the other end of the country and bought a ST at another club it would be extremely difficult to truly change allegiance, let alone at your local rivals.

My old man grew up in Plymouth and was an Argyle fan, watching them regularly in the 50s and 60s. My folks moved to Bushey in 1970 and he would only go to the Vic when Plymouth were in town at first. But as his friend network grew and Watford and Plymouth were not in the same division he started to go to Watford matches shortly before GT rolled up and very quickly became a regular. He was in the correct end for the 1984 semi!

So I think it's fair to say that someone can change allegiance but I agree that it would never be towards a local rival.

I know fellers who were MIGs, one through a club our sons go to and one through the pub
Both pretty decent when you talk to them, one actually saved me after the 0-4 game when he clocked me as we walked towards them and just said "not him"

It cost me a few beers in the pub later though

Football fans are not typically representative of the best of society, Luton or otherwise. Call me Mr Snooty but there’s a lot of Watford fans I’d never want to hang out with in real life (myself included).

Different times now, people move around a lot more. Kids up and down the country, especially in commuter towns like Watford, would have more of a dilemma over who to support rather than it being immediately obvious

Funnily enough I moved to Plymouth in 1986, and tried to change my allegiance to Argyle, but I failed miserably and I have remained a HORN until this day.
