Our approach to playing the top 6 this season is like the fire brigade turning up at a tower block fire in fancy dress trying to put out the flames with water pistols. In footballing terms we are Monty Python's Black Knight believing we can defeat superior opponents and refusing to change our tactics when reality is staring us in the face!

Yep I feel the same. But it's the hope that kills you. Better to go into the match expecting certain and heavy defeat. Then all anxiety will be gone and we can enjoy the piss up in the green man and the match will just be a footnote.

I agree, the fact is we have more chance of winning the cup than 90 other league teams, that's a start!

Maybe Martinez could email the correct answer to Javi.

Could be handy to recall both Hogg & Watson for this one.

Well that was depressing we looked so good and then fell so far

I hope we don’t do that in the final - but suspect that is the way of our season

Just watched the highlights, and it was a real video nasty.

Defensively we were destroyed in that second half. Good job Foster played a blinder. He made 3 or 4 world class saves. I'm amazed more was not said about the saves he made. All the talk was about Kepa, but Foster single handily kept the score down. Chelsea could easily have scored 7 in the second half, and that's no exaggeration. I couldn't believe how many great scoring chances they created. Seeing as they were off form and played in Europe on Thursday, it was an appalling second half performance from Watford to have allowed that to happen. Mapps was all over the place. Dreadful marking for the second goal, and was generally outplayed by superior players. Constantly in the wrong position.

Two routine corners were our undoing. Players being outmuscled by opposition just wanting it more.

Going forward we were a little unlucky, but also so wasteful. Holebas could and probably should have scored two goals. Pereyra was unlucky with his free kick, but predictably a Success/Gray combo messed up the rebound. All Success had to do was make a clean header from just a few yards out in front of an open goal, but headed it against Gray who was offside. Unlucky or a typical lack of quality in even getting a simple task like that right? Success had another effort in the final seconds. He ran with purpose and strength across the Chelsea line, then his final shot was no harder than a back pass. He is not able to hit the ball cleanly with power very often. Again that's a lack of technical ability.

We caught Chelsea out in the first half, but once they stepped it up, they just blew us away, making Watford look like a Championship side. The gulf in class was ridiculous, and reminded me of when we played them in the FA Cup as a Championship side.

We are what we are, and have done very well against opponents outside the top six, but we just cannot allow ourselves to be so outplayed by these sides. Other teams can take points off them, but we are just unable to do it. It's a real problem, and I'd hate to see this sort of thing happen to us on May 18th. That would be so depressing.

I like that Watford fans are beginning to realise that it’s just as annoying to lose a top six side by going ‘toe to toe’ as it was when we tried to defend the 0-0.

It's more the constant selling ourselves short in this type of match, that's so frustrating.

We play these games like we're star struck Championship players. I'm amazed we don't ask for their shirts after the match.

All being equal, then the better side should win, but as we all know, these teams are vulnerable at times. Timing does play a part often, but we've played Arsenal (h ), Chelsea (a ), United (a ) all at good times, yet still lose.

We should play the match, rather than reputation.

In what way was producing a domineering first 45 minutes of football yesterday or being the better side with ten men against Arsenal playing like starstruck Championship players?

We might defend like that at times and our finishing poor, but what was wrong with our attitude?

  12. Moosegasm

Since we beat Chelsea at home last season, we've lost 15 of our last 16 league games against the top 6.
If we play 4-2-2-2 and/or pick more than 1 outfield player that isnt gonna track back and defend like his life depends on it we will lose and probably embarassingly. That's the sad reality of our situation right now.

Yes, the dithering/copping-out as we approach the penalty area is something I find very frustrating. So many brilliantly constructed mid-field moves fizzle out at that point. There is a lack of confidence there. I'm sure the players feel it and it is self-feeding. But good, incisive passes require good movement off the ball by the recipient. In our squad only Gray shows this. He does have a poor touch, more often than not, but it is exaggerated by his willingness to go for things first-time, without hesitation. All good strikers make way more mistakes and misses than successes, so we shouldn't be surprised that he does. But he is roasted for it on this forum and in the stands. His policy is correct, in my opinion, even though he is not a great footballer.
One of the worst of the shot-ditherers is Deeney. He has accumulated a huge amount of football savvy in so many other respects but he seems to lack confidence in that respect. His first reaction is to try to set up someone else for the shot. This is by no means always a bad thing, but he now does it by default. He is a centre forward who has been scoring goals for over a decade and he should keep faith with himself to carry on doing it. It seems strange that I am accusing Deeney of all people in lacking confidence! Yes I realize he has slowed down, but it doesn't stop Murray (or Higuaín for that matter).

Before anybody else throws their FA cups tickets away in disgust at our performance , please post on here I’m sure you will find somebody to take them off your hands

Yes we will probably lose , yes we will probably get stuffed , but you never know we are only a bit of power from deeney , a trick for Gerry D , some class from Bobby P and super Sub Gray away from a major trophy

Deeney's problem is he needs time to tee himself up. He doesn't get that time often in the prem.

I went for a nice long walk through the Chess Valley, making this probably the first game I've not watched at least on a stream.

How did Chalobah play? I understand he could have been stronger for their first, but did he look like he could play more?

I'm just thinking that Javi needs to go back to the drawing board for the final. More Cleverly and Chalobah, less Pereyra and Deulefeo.

It's all very well having players like Pereyra on the pitch, for the moment of magic they might offer, but he's a liability against a team like City, when we need all hands to the pump.

We need to look at a packed midfield and see if we can swamp them. If it's 0-0 with 20 to go, then players like Gray off the bench can come on and nick sommat, but we cannot go into the final without a plan.

Has Javi got the brains to work that out before we line up at Wembley, or are we just gonna go for our usual line up and get pegged?

I hope he has the brains but everything has to go our way you'd think.
    Formation,luck,spirit etc etc.
Starting RP and GD would seem like folly. One of the two,so presumably GD.
    Double up on Sterling?
Lord knows, but he's had long enough to think of it and hopefully he's watched Palace and Toon defeat them,so it can be done.

Yep. Realistically there are going to some tough decisions to be made for the final. Does Sema/Cleverly need to play and be instructed to track back at all costs?

Thought Challobah did all right considering how little he has played. Pereyra did ok one of his more involved performances, wonder if your right, start of with a squad of fighters and then about 60 mins bring on the flair to run at them with fresh legs.

I did wonder if Javi was using this game to see how a few different patterns and players would work, and arguably with the exception of 5 mins of madness just after 1/2 time did all right.

We genuinely looked brilliant in the first half right up to the last pass, to much old style Arsenal trying to run it into the back of the net

In the final a midfield which includes Doucoure, Capoue and Cleverley. I'd play Femenia and Janmaat on the right as there will be tracking back. On the left I would do the same. Masina and Holebas.
That in theory would make it more difficult for City to get through us if our lot concentrate and play well.
Then if we are holding them after 70 mins change it for a match winning sub.

    Anyone got Gracia’s email address?

Ahhhh, the old double double full back formation. Would be worth it just to listen to all the pundits bemoan how we didn't even "give it a go" on our big day out.

How can you say that off the back of mere stats when Mitrovic has been playing with a completely different, and inferior, set of players who have been relegated. Do you think that the likes of Salah, Kane and Aguero would knock in as many goals if they played as a lone forward for Fulham?

We lose to the top 6 more often that not because that’s what they are. The 6 best sides in the league. I just don’t get all the angst about this. If we kept on losing to the bottom 6, then that would be an issue.

How I see it is we want to be best of the rest. Who are our rivals for that? Well this season it’s been Wolves, Leicester, Everton and West Ham. We’ve beaten all four of them. That’s why we’ve made progress this season, and getting thumped at the likes of Liverpool and City, who between then have lost only one home match all season, shouldn’t get us too depressed considering.

I also think if Dre played for Fulham he'd have a minutes per goal of between 200 and 240 and they couldve stayed up. Cardiff would definitely have stayed up with Dre in their team. Mitrovic has scored once in his last 20 hours of football.
