Positivity at games, which is where it counts. Some people seem to think posting on here actually makes any difference.

Forum is for venting about Giraldi and discussing politics. Or in your case making hundreds of funny gags about knicker wetting.

I still can't get my head around why Mapps did what he did, why he panicked so much to a cross into the box. I know for some certainty that had Dawson been playing, that would not have been a goal. Dawson's mantra for that type of ball is to just leave it. If a striker is on your shoulder and scores, then so be it. What is for sure is if you touch the ball, or try to deal with a ball coming across you when you're facing your own goal, the chances of scoring an own goal is high. If you just let it go across you, then the chances of scoring an own goal is zero.

Foster has come out today saying it's not true that we lack resilience, but I'm not so sure. Dropping 17 points from winning positions sounds pretty alarming to me. It can't always be down to bad luck. What Mapps did on Saturday, was not bad luck, it was because of sheer panic and being totally unaware of who was around. He convinced himself he needed to deal with it, but for whatever reason decided to blast it into the net. He didn't miskick or slice it. He firmly placed it exactly where he wanted it to go. I can only think he thought he could lift it over the bar, as he normally does if he was up the other end, but that's a high risk strategy.

Bit late to the party but there are a few points that have been made that I felt I should comment on
Mariappa - Absolute disastrous own goal and isn't good enough which we all know. I actually don't blame the lack of recruitment for this as we started the season with two decent right backs. Not brilliant but this is Watford so not sure we should expect much more. Unfortunately both have been injured for some time which has meant Mariappa has played more than he should. I would still play Dawson ahead of him but hopefully Femenia will be back for United
Pearson - I wasn't a fan when he came in and I'm still not. The time wasting is becoming a joke, the subs are too late to make a difference and we are failing to win games because in my view, when we take the lead we show no enthusiasm to build on it. Brighton were dreadful and were there for the taking but we made no effort after the goal to get a second a kill the game which meant there only had to be one mistake or one bit of quality to wipe out the lead.
Brighton - All the pubs from the station down wouldn't let kids in so we walked to The Lanes where there are a number of nice little pubs. The train coming back is a pain but no worse than getting out of a number of stadiums in a car. I quite like the ground and the atmosphere I thought was OK. Very good day out as usual except for the game. For those not getting in the ground because they had drugs on them, what do they expect? Maybe if you stayed off that stuff you wouldn't act like idiots. Absolute zero sympathy. I did see a few lads before and after the game who were playing up but no more than usual
Homophobic chanting - Didn't hear any myself but I hope those that were doing it are banned. Utter bell ends
The defence - It gets a lot of criticism but in fairness we allowed Brighton to create virtually nothing and defended very well, Mariappa's brain fart aside
Pusetto - Came on way too late but noticeably was trying to gee the players up to give more effort. I feel he should have been more involved in Sarr's absence
Deeney - Had a poor game but has played well recently so he's allowed one. In fairness to him, we did lump the ball up to him far too much when he's up against their centre backs. I felt we needed to get it wide more but Pearsons tactic seems to be to lump it to Deeney
Relegation - It's not looking good but then nobody at the bottom is making much of a fist of it currently. Bournemouth losing was handy. I think we need to get through the next two games and see where we are then. It's very possible that we may be adrift by then but have some more winnable games after that. I don't know why but I think we will survive but if we do there needs to be a lot of changes in the summer

Surprised to hear you're not a fan of Pearson. His record is very decent and is a good enough manager for Watford. We probably wouldn't be anything more than a mid-table side under him, and he is limited tactically, however, as he's already proved, he's a good motivator. That is his strength. I think had we got him after Gracia, we'd have at least 10 more points and would be virtually safe by now. He would be my choice to lead us to promotion next season also if we do go down.

I'm also a little surprised how a dedicated fan such as yourself cannot blame recruitment. Defence was a problem before the season started and it was amazing that we didn't see it as an issue, but there is no excuse for not addressing this in January. To let Prodl go and not to recall Wilmott, is very strange indeed to be left with just 4 central defenders, with three of those playing every week currently. That is just asking for trouble.

I think the mariappa thing was just a one-off catastrophic error. He obviously didnt know if anyone was going to get on the end of it or not (this is obviously a sign of a poor player, he should have been aware that the ball was going nowhere) and thought better to be safe than sorry, so tried to lash it out for a corner. If he'd left it and there had have been a player there waiting, it would have been an even bigger error.

I feel sorry for him, because his mum's lovely.

I blame recruitment to a point in the fact we've not upgraded the central defenders but I was reasonably happy with the choices at right back at the start of the season. Unfortunately both have been injured for a while now.
I want to like Pearson but the last few games have not won me over, especially our lack of attacking intent. I'm not suggesting he should go and may well be the right person if we go down but it just doesn't fill me with any great hope. Hopefully I'm wrong and will be chuffed if I am

He also doesn't have confidence in his own ability on the ball. If that was Kiko, he controls it no problem and then either clears or knocks it back to Foster. Kiko has the best first touch under pressure out of anyone in our squad, Mariappa probably the worst.

You're forgetting one of the strangest things about it, which is that for some unknown reason he decided to kick it with his wrong (left) foot. It would have also been feasible for him to let the ball run across his body a bit and then try and clear it with his right foot, which should have sent the ball more towards the corner flag than back towards goal.

I agree, but I do think 9 times out of 10 Mariappa hoofs it clear for a corner (which to be clear, would have still been an error). Just a freak occurrence that he buried it.

I dont think he played well on saturday, and the own goal wasnt even the worst mistake he made.

He also made 2 ridiculous late tackles, one in each half, to give away dangerous free kicks when faced with zero threat.

Mariappa is just getting worse each game, which was always likely to happen with him being given an extended run of games especially out of position. He really needs a rest.

Anyone have any idea when Kiko is coming back?

Wasn't so long ago Kiko was getting loads of stick !

    Funny old game eh?

Typical he got injured when hitting form.. like Sarr.

With our medical record I fear they"ll get injured again!

It's all about the disappointment after being in the lead. If the own goal was in the first half, and we got the draw with that fine goal towards the end of the second half, we would all be much more upbeat.

From yesterday, even Lyon defenders are at it. Doesn't make me feel much different about Mariappa's though unfortunately:

I wouldn't and I'm one of the more optimistic sorts on here who still believes we can stay up.

If the game had panned out in reverse with Brighton scoring first and us performing in the first half like we did in the second half, I'd be pissed off by the fact we didn't get going until after half time and in the end failed to ever really test the keeper in a poor side on a bad run, in yet another game we needed to win.

I thought this too. It was an absolutely catastrophic mistake and the more you see it, the harder it is to understand how he was able to make it. Clearly he’s lost sense of whether there’s danger behind him, and also where the goal is. Even so, if he was genuinely worried about an attacker either getting in front of him, or sneaking in behind and absolutely had to do something with the ball, he had the option of using his left foot to send the ball back where it came from, or to divert it past the left post and toward the corner flag.

It’s incompetence of the highest order.

People saying it’s Pearson fault we didn't attack and go for a second after scoring the first, it would have been different if Sarr was playing, I don't remember Pereyra doing much!
