Not yet been announced. Can't imagine availability will be a big issue though I'm sure it'll be better attended than most pre-season games.

You are right, even the friendlies with Granada and Udinese attracted 5 and 11 thousand respectively. Availability probably won't be an issue

    Pretty poor show if so...

  7. Why? Nice away game, easy and cheap to get to.

Because, although having a decent amount with success with Villa, he is first and foremost remembered as OUR manager. Only fitting that the opening fixture (if it is to be an annual event) is played at The Vic

Would not complain too much if it was arranged year about.
Also as we got GT from there, it might be nice sometime to include Lincoln City.

We get to celebrate GT and slag off John Terry, that's win win for me.

Annual GT tournament invite Lincoln next year. Move around where it's played.

    Wolves as well.
4 teams 2 semis and a final for the GT cup.

The Watford v Villa pre season friendly has now switched to Villa Park on 29 July and is no longer the Graham Taylor memorial day. That event has been moved to 5 August at Vicarage Road against opposition yet to be decided. Apparently our pitch needs more time to be ready.

I'll have to miss it then, I'd blocked out 29th July so a bit disappointed that they've moved the date at what is pretty short notice

Guess it will just be Udinese or Granada?

Strikes me as a major PR own goal by the club, I'm afraid.

As Aberystwyth Hornet has said, with the Club announcing the date/details of this some time ago, there may be many supporters who have arranged to keep July 29th free, and sorted out a holiday around the weekend of 5th/6th August so they could be back in time for the start of the season, particularly as the borstals will have thrown the brats out for six weeks by then.

Really gutted about this, especially the first year of this game, the owners have not got much wrong, especially off the pitch, I hope we play Lincoln in the new game or Scunthorpe as that is where the great man is from. Villa park is a great away game, I know they thought a lot of him but think it will not even be half a capacity there, hope I am wrong and it is a full house

Any danger of the club getting their act together and updating us as to what's happening with this ? Scheduled date is now less than a month away, this has not been managed well at all.

Shame they couldn't have organised the GT Trophy game against one of the three teams we played in the UEFA cup. Next time.

Well 2nd level yes.. but then so are Aston Villa. Tbf FCK's season would have started as well.

Maybe a controversial choice - but we could have invited the scummers down for the game. Hardly likely to be playing them any time soon so a great chance to annihilate them; a lot of press coverage of the game so if they disrespected GT or the fixture in any way they'd show themselves up for the neaderthal's they are; and we used to play them in a lot of "friendly" fixtures back in the day (and in fairness to Pleat he said some decent things after GT's passing).

Thinking about it though - the nice new windows on the club shop would probably be smashed to bits, and we could contrive to somehow lose the game....

Probably best we didn't invite them after all.

I suspect many would disagree about this being a good idea, particularly older supporters who have seen it before.
As you say we would contrive to lose, if we win it is a nothing game anyway.
There would be the cost of policing, probable violence or handbags/swinging on the corner flags
And would such a fixture be a good tribute to the great man. Better a tournament involving clubs he has managed/played for.

Saying that would love to get and beat them in the cup on our way to winning it. As we are 3-0 up to Crystal palace in the final singing are you watching L%$&n Town would be extra sweet

Pretty much all the negatives occurred to me as I was typing, but decided to carry on anyway!

We did use to play a lot of friendlies against them, though. I recall one in about 88 - Kenny Dalglish allowed John Barnes to play the first half for us (can't remember what the game was for). We trailed 0-1 at half time, only for Rick Holden to replace Barnes at half time and inspire a 3-1 win. I don't remember any trouble, although as a kid I was only paying attention to the match.

In 88 it was Luthers testimonial match-over 7,000 there-it was our first year back in Div 2 and they were still in Div 1. We also played them at the end of our runners up season in 83 for Ross Jenkins testimonial so there is a bit of a record there

However playing them is not a fitting tribute to the greatest ever person to be associated with this club. I agree with Cthulhu.

As we could not play the game at the Vic, in my opinion, it would have been right and proper for us to have transferred the match to Villa Park, rather than playing at home to a team that had nothing to do with GT.
I f Villa wish to still consider this as a graham Taylor Memorial Match, then good luck to them, and I think we should embrace it.

The club have made a bit of a horlicks of the whole affair. Which is a shame given the cause behind it.
