Completed the Bedford half in 1:36:24 (according to my watch). Was aiming for sub 1:40 so very pleased, especially considering I have a gammy knee. 3 weeks off now and restart training at Christmas.

    Wow, cracking time.

You would be one of those that serenely run past me as I'm coughing and spluttering trying to break a couple of hours. I hate you.

    Congrats!

I've managed to get a place in the Milton Keynes winter half next Sunday, which may not be wise as in the past fortnight I've barely trained but have spent several nights getting pis5ed.

Anyone on here suffered from knee issues? I was struggling before my last half marathon in early December so took 2/3 weeks off. Tried 2 very small jogs since and after 2k pain flares up in my right knee. I'm sure it's 'runners knee' as I had it previously in my left knee but after a few weeks rest it was fine. Was hoping for a big year this year and plenty of running but now getting concerned I won't manage anything. :(

Most knee problems with runner/joggers are related to muscle "imbalance" elsewhere.

I honestly think it is worth getting in front of a physio for knee problems as they are very difficult to self diagnose using sources such as the Internet.

They will diagnose properly and give you some exercises that will strengthen the right muscles and solve the problem within a few weeks. £40 quid, or so, well spent.

If you misdiagnose and strengthen the wrong muscles, then the "imbalance" may get worse!

    Best of luck.

I had a similar problem 8 years ago saw a specialist, from looking at my running shoes he could tell what was was wrong from how they were wearing out, bought some proper running shoes from a proper running shop after going on one those machines, used to just buy shoes that looked good or was on offer, best £100 I had ever spent, change them every year as it does make a difference. It is one sporting item I never cut corners on, fingers crossed not had problems since.

I used to get knee pains and then I switched to the 'on the toe' free running style. I've never had any kind of injury since, but in the flip side, I think my normal pace is slower as a result of less push in my jump

I run a boxing gym and I often have beginners who are relatively out of shape and moderately unfit. I always like to ensure that they have suitable footwear this may seem obvious but it does really make a big difference. With the boxing I will get my boxers running regularly and one thing that I always say to my beginners is do not run before you can walk! You could possibly start off with a walk run combination, this being when you run for a specific distance and then walk for a precise distance, gradually take the walks out. It gets relatively easier as your heart, lungs and circulation strengthen. Remember to not run too fast and go at a pace that your body is comfortable with as a lot of newbies tend to run too fast and burn themselves out or get injured, slowly is the way forward.
As long as you eat relatively well and run at least 3 times per week you will feel yourself getting fitter in no time.

Just realised that this thread was posted ages ago: How did you get on Tom bola?

I did my achillies last year and saw a specialist. He said as long as your trainers are comfortable that's all that matters. He said getting trainers fitted in a shop was a waste of time. The most expensive shoes are just as good as mid range.

I know how I hurt my knee. I attempted a 50k run and felt a twinge a 2/3 of the way round. Unfortunately I was miles from home so had to keep going. It's not been right since and isn't getting better. I've got private healthcare through work so might set up a physio appointment through them (if they let me after only using it a year ago).

I think you're right. I've self diagnosed but should see a physio to get a proper diagnosis.

It's been a bad start to 2017 also. Have had bad pain in my foot when jogging for about 2 months & after a bad time in the local New Years Day 10k I decided to see a physio who says i have an issue with a tendon which has required nothing but rest & strapping. Yesterday was my first 5k in a fortnight & although there was some slight discomfort it felt much better. Rest is usually the best option for any injury.

    Good to see you back.

Rest certainly is the best option. I'm back out running now as well. I've had some rest but also spent some time doing some stretches and knee strength exercises. There's still some niggles but I'm putting that down to a month of not doing much and the body just needs to get used to it.

I've no need to rush back into training as apart from a few local events i've nothing planned till Brighton in April.

I'm running again (at least what I call 'running')

Doing 1 easy jog, one interval run and one long run per week. Interested in doing a couple of local 10ks before end of March and maybe, if all goes well, aiming for my first half marathon later in the year.

I had a horrendous (brilliant) Christmas in terms of lack of exercise and eating badly so I started the year sluggishly - my local 5m route was taking me anywhere up to 49 minutes but last week I ran it in 43:22 so it's coming back. I've got the Thorpe Park half at the end of Feb, MK 20 miler at the start of March and MK marathon in May. Lots to do but feeling good at the moment.

I went spinning on Friday for the first time just to do some cross training - fark me, I've never sweated so much.

A slight positive on a bad day is my local physio thinks I'm ok to start proper training again. After a 22-14 parkrun which is not fast but importantly pain free am looking forward to clocking up some miles again. Will certainly keep biking though occasionally to break things up.

Finished the Watford Half Marathon this morning in 1hr 34mins. It's quite a hilly course so pleased with that time and thankfully seem to have come through unscathed.

That is one hell of a time on that course, the hills are killers and I know what goes up has to come down but hilly course add a lot of time on than flat ones, it also, feels you go up a lot more then you come down ! Congratulation and have an afternoon with your feet up !

Inspired by Nascot Ive just had a late night 13.1 mile run around MK. I'm not quick and never will be but I'm feeling fitter, though the thought of MK marathon in May is still daunting.

Well done all on progress. Great time at Watford half Nascot.

I am now in full marathon training flow. Will be doing a 17 miler next Sunday with Gade Valley Harriers in Hemel. Really nice course around Ashridge Forest, properly marshaled and has water stops. For £5 is very good value.

It's the 26th February mate. I can't make that one but will be at the 20 miler. You doing the MK marathon?

Yeah the 26th. I shall be doing the 20 miler as well. Yeah I am doing Milton Keynes marathon on 1st May. Just got to somehow keep going past 20 miles which is where I hit the wall in my last marathon and ruined what could have been a sub 4.

My marathon training is increasing now and getting to the stage where I'm really pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. I managed 15 miles on Sunday night and felt zonked afterwards and my legs were cramping up. I need to make sure I take some food with me as I struggle after about 10 miles without a bit of sugar & sustenance. I normally take a few jelly babies on half marathon with me so I need to do the same on my training runs. 17 planned for this weekend, which seems pretty daunting.

I normally take a few energy sweets with me & aim to take one every 4 / 5 miles. I also have a couple of bottles of water or energy drinks left outside relations or friends homes so it feels like a marathon with drink stations almost. Do you use energy gels as not my favourite thing they do work.

I have use the but like you I'm not a fan. I found the jelly beans that Sweat Shop sell were also effective. I was in Clapham for a meeting yesterday and went past an independent sport shop and he recommended I buy something called shotbloks, which are like jelly consistency. I'm going to try them this Sunday.

I tried something similar once and really struggled to get them down. I'm OK with energy gels but feel like I need a few to stop crashing. Jelly Belly do Sports Beans which are decent http://www.sportbeans.co.uk/

I went out last night for a 17 mile training run and hit the proverbial wall, which was unpleasant. It didn’t help spending three hours in a hot meeting room yesterday afternoon followed by a two hour drive home – not ideal prep. I felt zonked after about three miles, managed to plod along and clock up ten miles but I feel awful today and pretty achy. I was planning on doing 5 miles later this week before my half marathon on Sunday but I’m now thinking about not running until Sunday to rest myself. I’ve also woken up today with a pretty unpleasant pain on the outside bottom of my right foot.

All in all I feel like a very old man today.

I would have thought those runs would have been a bit much in the same week as a half marathon race, Mr LBH?

The 17 miler was scheduled for Sunday initially, but I put it off to Monday however I think it may have been a bit ambitious to do that on a Monday night. Rest for the rest of the week and my next run will be the half on Sunday. I feel fit, but I also feel a bit fkuced as well so a few days rest is in order.

It may sound an obvious answer but rest is the best solution. I can say that as someone who has had some stupid niggles for the past year.
