I ran the Kimbolton half yesterday - a very flat course, definitely one to consider if you want to get a good time.

Another fantastic Great North Run. Noticed a couple of Watford fans on the course. Well worth entering just for the atmosphere not a PB but happy with my time. What a great weekend

The great north run always looks good.

Nascot nailed a marathon today in a brilliant time.

I ran a half three week sago and have been a lazy barsteward ever since but seeing the GNR and several people out running today has given me the gee up I needed to get back out running.

Finished my first marathon in 3:48:48. The aim was sub 4 hours so pleased to beat that. Looking at my splits I was too quick at the start and paid for it later on so lesson learnt. At one point I was on for 3:40 but soon blew up!

It was the New Forest marathon and I recommend it. Well organised and a stunning course.

Cracking time Nascot, I have done a few half and and a couple of full marathons and have never failed to go too fast at the start.

Did the same in last half marathon as well. I just get carried away and go with the quicker runners!

I think it's only natural. I have a little voice in my head saying get well ahead of your target time before the pain comes only it just arrives earlier.

  11. nascot

    nascot First Team

That was part of my thinking. Every km I was ahead of schedule and had enough in the bank for when the pain arrived. Maybe I put too much in.

Congrats on your GNR time. Superb pace.

Excellent time Nascot, nearly the exact same time as mine for my first marathon at London in April!
Reading your comments about your splits reminded me so much of mine as I felt I could get 3.40 or even better as I was running so well but around the 22 mile I just couldn't keep the pace up! Got to try and run at my goal race pace next time but its hard not to get carried away. :sign15:

Cheers, as it was New Forest was it a trail marathon?

It was classed as multi terrain so was a mix of roads and compact gravel paths in the woods. It rained a lot the day before so there were a few puddles and muddy areas but it wasn't like a cross country course.

Would you recommend it as looking for some new events next year?

Yeah I would. It's the first 'big' event I've done so can't compare it to others but being based in the New Forest Showgrounds meant they had lots of room for food, drink and entertainment afterwards (and free massages). The course was very scenic through woodland and the open countryside and was undulating (although towards the end small inclines felt like mountains!). It was well sign posted and there were plenty of marshalls. Water stations were frequent enough although water in cups, no bottles. Also one station should have had gels but didn't. Support from the public around the course was good as well, maybe the good weather helped swell the numbers. Goody bag at the end was crap, just a load of leaflets. I picked up my race pack the day before which contained a decent tech t-shirt. The medal is decent as well.

Edit: Frances Benali was the race starter :)

I was trying to work out who the race starter was as missed the start of his interview, worked out was an ex Saints player.

Anyway a half marathon PB for me of 1 hour 45 minutes and 20 seconds so very pleased with that. Would definitely recommend it the plusses easily outweigh the negatives. There can't be many more scenic places to do a half or full marathon within easy reach.

the running club seems to have plateaued in popularity. and we have apparently 0 runners from watford. so given how many people post on this thread, come join!

I joined up for about an hour, and you abused me on another thread, so I left. Can't be arsed.

I prefer socialising with people I get on with. I'm sensitive like that. ;D

Did the Yorkshire Marathon yesterday which was mainly out in the countryside on the outskirts of the city of York. Nice course apart from the odd hill & plenty of water points. Glad to add it to the list.

I looked at that but it was sold out. I guess it's very popular.

Anyone who applied for the London Marathon heard if they're successful or not? Confirmations are being sent out this week.

I didn't get the magazine today which based on 2 things doesn't look positive. 1 I know 2 people who got successful magazines today. 2 Last year the first day was the only time I know someone get in, after that all rejection magazines & emails.

So basically already looking for spring marathons elsewhere now

Two mates received their response yesterday - one got in and the other didn't. Either way none of us can do it next year as it clashes with a wedding day for one of the lads so we'd all be deferring to 2018 anyway. I'm working from home today eagerly keeping an eye out for the postie.

Failed also. Looking for something new. Is Milton Keynes any good? Early May & supposedly flat & fast. I would recommend Manchester or even Paris if you fancy some sights.

I did the half last year which follows the same route about 8 miles. It's not bad, mostly flat through parkland, canal and lakes. Was really windy last year though. It finishes in Stadium MK which is good.

Gone a bit quiet on this thread and the Strava group. Cold weather keeping everyone in? ;)

I'm doing the Bedford Half on Sunday which will be my last race of the year. Got a bit of knee injury though so not sure if I'll achieve my sub 1:40 target. Also signed up for the Watford Half in February, the Manchester Marathon in April and trying to decide between Berko, North London and Silverstone Halves in March.
