It looks like a new colony of ants has set up home in one of our sunflowers. This means when I open it I should get some queens etc. We had a toy one of these when my son was very little (about the size of a A5 piece of paper) that was a bit shyte (because it was so small and we could only capture a few ants). Has any one got any experience of something more substantial?

Watched quite a few youtube bits about ant farms in the past. There's a lot of good videos on there.

This, to my untrained eye, looks like the RollsRoyce of ant farms.

Tried ant farming once but the yield isnt what its cracked up to be, right pain to milk them too. My advice is to stay away. Try chickens instead.

How successful were you at milking chickens?

No. I want to diversify from my 'successful' moog farm. I say 'farming' them but it's more management of a nasty never-ending infestation.

So unplug the jukebox and do us all a favour.
That music's lost its taste, so try another flavour.

Would you say there were more like alien invaders, or smooth criminals breaking-and-entering?

Jesus wept, you dont milk chickens. You plant their eggs to grow aubergines.

Fascinating order the Hymenoptera. Plenty of great books on ants and their wonderful world. Farmers. Engineers. Socialists. Murderers. Been around for millions of years (plenty of examples in Baltic amber) and the way things are going be around long after we have disappeared.

    Don’t miss this masterpiece:
The Soul of the White Ant by Eugene Marais.
    Fascinating social animals like people..

    Disclaimer:
‘White ants’ are not ants, nor are they remotely related to ants.
    But it’s a good book ...
