Totally agree, him and Niang was an awful partnership, no link up play and often spent time 30 yards away from each other
I cannot understand why there is this desire from certain fans to see Deeney leave? Who are we going to get that is able to replace his goals, leadership and team spirit. He does a lot more for the team and club as a whole than just score goals. Last night he hardly had a kick but was that down to his play or to the support he was given? Until Success came on he was up against two defenders who were able to out jump him most of the time when the ball was constantly hoofed forward. When he did win the occasional header it fell to no one as he had no support. As soon as he received support, the Liverpool defence were otherwise occupied and suddenly he was winning a number of headers. I cannot remember a single cross where he had a chance of winning the ball in front of the Liverpool keeper and that was down to the quality of the crossing and not Deeney's movement. I am interested to hear suggestions for his replacement unless of course you think Okaka should lead the line and we don't replace Deeney at all. I already feel a disconnect from this group of players and the club would be a whole lot poorer without our captain.
Sorry but that's just my opinion, he isn't going to be here forever and I don't see why we should keep him just so people feel 'connected' to the team. If we signed Destro in the summer and he scored goals, did his crazy celebrations and said how much he loves the fans I'm sure people would get over Troy pretty quickly. Plus he's a better player so there you go, there's an upgrade I'd happily have. And yes for the record I think Okaka is better than Deeney, which I've stated before.
I think we should do a Marcus Gayle on him, he's too immobile to be a lone striker but in the thick of it he is a great winner of a header, so I think at some point he should drop back to being a defender, Palace aside I think he works well at defending set pieces and as captain he would be in a better position to direct his teammates as a captain should.
Ah, Hornet23/ITKJim doesn't have Vydra to moan about anymore now so turns on our top scorer. How surprising.
If you remember when Ighalo and Deeney first played together as a strike partnership, Deeney was up front with Ighalo tucked in behind and it was not until they switched roles that their partnership really began to flourish. Therefore IMO Deeney is not being played in his best position, he should not be leading the line he should be tucked in behind another front man, Okaka or a.n.other maybe? Then I think we might just start to see the old Deeney again.
I don't know a lot about Destro so I don't know his pro's and con's. However what I do know is that he is unproven in the Premier League and to switch Deeney with an unknown quantity is a real risk. We have taken quite a few risks that haven't worked out so do we need to do so again by replacing our top scorer? Personally I would rather stick with someone who is tried and trusted. I have to agree with TVOR; Deeney is not a lone striker. Whether he is played with Okaka or AN Other he needs support and he will improve. In recent seasons he has played his best with a partner be it Vydra, Ighalo, Okaka or Forestierri. It is not that he is past his best, it is that we are not utilising him to the best of his ability because of the current system being played. I feel that is true of not just Deeney but several other players in the squad but I don't think it is right that you single out Deeney for criticism.
It seems to be getting very agenda-driven. Very weird and people are deluding themselves if they think that a team like us can afford to get rid of a 10+ goal a season striker.
Good points, but like Meh! I would think the decline is down t the system and lack of a speedy strike partner. At least, I hope so.
I don't know what Luther Blissett's stats were like but his goals ratio to chances converted was not great yet he is considered by most as the best striker the club has ever had. The old adage rings true about there being lies, damn lies and statistics.
Selling Deeney would be ridiculous, the fact that other clubs want him and managers speak highly of him says alot. If he isn't play well then drop him for the odd game but to sell him would be stupid imo.
Yeah but I'm comparing Deeney this season with Deeney last season. His performances haven't been very good this season - to my eye, demonstrably worse than last year and that's backed up by the stats. Systems don't make him attempt half as many tackles or lose considerably more headers, that's down to the player. I don't want him to leave, by the way, I want him to play better. If he doesn't then, he shouldn't expect to always start next season. In response to some of the other posters, he hasn't actually played as a lone central striker that much this season - he's started 11 times with Ighalo (plus came on as sub in the 14th minute once), 6 times with Okaka, and once with Niang. He's only played as the middle one of a front three 11 times as far as I can see and I think his performances there are on a par with the rest of his season. His stats spread pretty evenly across the different combinations too: with Ighalo -12 appearances, 4 goals, 1 assist; with Okaka - 6 appearances, 2 goals, 1 assist; as a lone central striker 11 appearances, 4 goals, 2 assists.
Personally think Deeney and Anthony Joshua should swap roles. Deeney would make a mouthy boxer and has the face to suit and I'm sure Joshua would be quicker and more mobile than Deeney. Added bonus is that he has won at Wembley , something Deeney hasn't done.
Just to take one point in isolation from your post and that is headers won. If you watch back last nights match, in the first half Liverpool had two on Deeney at all times. When going for a header they made sure they had one defender in front of him and one behind. Therefore unsurprisingly he didn't win many headers. Liverpool saw Deeney as their only threat and stopped him from playing. As soon as he was supported Liverpool had to change their method of play and had only one defender on him. As a result the number of headers won went upwards, we were able to retain possession and we were able to build pressure. That is how I prefer to see Watford play and I feel that his stats would be a lot better if we started each game the way we finished it last night. Criticism of Deeney alone is not justified and the whole style of play needs to be addressed.
I think Luther did very well on number of chances created - but of course the GT team was set up to score goals rather than to stop other teams scoring, and Luther was very good at getting into position to score.
Blissett used to miss a lot of chances, so many in fact he was nicknamed Luther Missit. It didn't matter though as Watford created so many chances, and he was quick, fearless and never hid. Miss three but score the next. A bit like Andy Cole who used to miss loads, but kept getting in the right positions to score. I love players like this, who will keep trying and are not afraid to miss but if they do their confidence is never affected.
Deeney hasn't exactly got a lot of competition atm - apart from Okaka who is in and out of the team like a yo yo so we cannot really think about selling him. Maybe if we brought in a striker or two that the manager liked and who could stay fit for more than 2 weeks then things might change.
Story that we'll listen to offers for Deeney after various fallings out with both Mazzarri and the club hierarchy in recent months... https://www.thegamblingtimes.com/2017/05/03/troy-deeney-way-watford/#.WQnl4MGkx8A.twitter
Oh dear. I love Troy but there's a line you don't cross. My only defence is he may have software that auto likes posts with the #watfordfc hashtag.
Probably. But I work in Social Media and know how easy it is to set up. Just seems way too unprofessional for Troy to do but I guess he must really hate Mazzarri. By the way, good to see you back posting regularly Admin.
My gut feeling is to get rid of Deeney and Capoue as they both underperform and are overpaid . However that would mean getting rid of almost half of our goals from last season which is slightly worrying and would place a lot of pressure any incoming strikers who will need adjustment time .
Whilst you talk sense, goals from Capoue were non exsistant before last season as he didn't score any, therefore it is possible that goals would start coming from another unlikely source next season! Although because of his involvement in the "non Reading " goal a few years ago I don't like the chap but We need a Shane Long type player, nippy and knows how to score goals!
Camouflage is in I see. Helps to hide the blubber. Tongue in cheek, I know people are sensitive about the bruisers weight
The odds on Deeney joining Leicster have suddenly dropped, now 4/5, i assume a few quid gone on it, only one bookie giving odds so I assume would not need to be a lot of poke?
