Giraldi needs to pack his bags as well. Need to find at least two new fullbacks this summer . Might need one now this window. Sides attack down Mariappa's flank all the time. They see him as a vulnerable point. I don't blame them. Credit to GD for the amount of defensive work he did on that flank with NC stepping in as well. Masina is showing his class and how big the gap is between a player of genuine quality (as he was at Bologna) and a journeyman pro. Mariappa is passionate no doubt, tries his best but that lofted cross that ended in their baldy keepers hands sums him up. Plenty of effort but not the level of ability needed at this level defensively or attacking wise even if he has been shoe horned in.
Giraldi is to blame for numerous things but Mariappa is only there because Janmaat and Kiko are injured. I think it's reasonable to assume that at least one of them would be available at any given point in the season. If they weren't then Mariappa to fill in for a game would be passable, we've just been unlucky that they've both been out for so long at the same time. Kiko back for Everton though by the sound of it.
Not necessarily true. Due to Giraldi failure to replace Holebas, Kiko has played at left back under person so Mariappa gets yet more starts in that scenario as well. However you cut it Mapps should not be starting the volume of games he has the last few seasons. Simply not good enough.
Good club man and honest pro but maybe unfortunate timing?! https://www.watfordfc.com/club/events/mariappas-ten-men-celebrate-ten-seasons-aidy BTW Presume Deeney will get some sort of "testimonial? Not that he needs the money but a game for charity and to say thanks ?
Good lad - profits to charity and what seems like a worthy cause as well. I think in this day an age a testimonial as such where the player benefits financially is not required.
Let's be honest, I like Janmaat but he has been horribly injury prone for years, and Femenia was horrific and looked completely out of his depth for about a year until his few, more recent, good performances. So it's not "unlucky" that we've had to use Mariappa, it's entirely due to negligent recruitment. Even last season Mariappa played a lot of games at centre back instead, which is still inexcusable. No idea why some people insist on defending the likes of Giraldi and the board on things like this.
Stop playing this man. Do not give him a new contract. Wasn't a Premier League player in his prime, and now belongs in a bottom half Championship side at best.
Be a decent, but only a decent, option if we go down, but it's frightening that he's still an option now that we're fighting for our lives in the Prem. 5 year deal incoming then
Ermm, Gray had switched all the way out to the right wing by the time of that goal - it was him who made the cross-field pass to Chilwell to set up the goal. He shouldn't have been in Mapps' thoughts at all at that point.
Good old Aidy he has served us well, good luck to him, pretty ironic if he signs for a premiership club, I hope Leeds don’t think they are signing a premiership defender!
Where you seen this? I’d be very surprised, but fair play to him if true. Could never doubt his commitment and comes across as a very good professional and nice guy.
Supposedly has left according to AL. Isn't there a rule we need a club trained player in our match day 18 in the Championship? I wonder how many players we have on our books that would tick that box now Mariappa has supposedly left.
Forster, Phillips or Lo-Everton would be the most likely. Unless we decide to bring someone like Jonathan Bond back to the club.
If he has gone then I think it’s poor of the club not to thank him for his services. Maybe not the best defender any more but always represented the club well, was a great ambassador and very professional.
To be fair to the club, their communication has been nothing short of outstanding under Pozzo, so I reckon we can let this one slide.
