Well Palace never seem to score at home so no doubt they'll suddenly final their scoring boots!

Burnley will just be like Newcastle so got to be prepared for that one.

And we have not factored in the FA cup run this year. winning the FA Cup might compensate for the slump to end the season on 45 points!

    The current position is:
    • 4 points better than this time last year (29 vs 25). This is 1 points better than after the last game.
    • 5 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (29 vs 24). This is 2 points worse than after the last game.
    • 7 points better than the '40 point' line (29 vs 22). This is the same as after the last game

3 points against Woking must help ?

We are all happy to be in 8th position at this stage of the season, but statistically only 6 other teams have been that high in the table since 1981/82 with a points total of under 30.

That's because of the fact there is a big 6 and their dominance over the other sides. Teams wont need 40 points for survival anymore. And 50 points will get you close to 7th and a probable spot in Europe!

This has been the second best points return from 22 games in the top flight.

So we only really need a couple more wins to ensure survival, but that's really just a technicality. We certainly can be looking towards a different outcome from this season now.

If we can land the couple of players we appear to be chasing, I honestly think we can finish 7th and qualify for Europe. That would be a fantastic achievement.

For the rest of this season, we can probably afford to play our strongest XI in the FA Cup. If we avoid City, then I believe we could go very deep in this tournament, maybe even to the final itself.

It's all there for Watford this season. They are good enough to do this, IMO.

Really hope we give the Cup a proper go this year.

No one will want to draw us.

HB, odd shift to ‘They’ in last para.

People saying we need a new centre half, as Kabasale will probably be ready to play next game I doubt the new signing will be coming in this side of the summer!

    Here we go!

    The current position is:
    • 7 points better than this time last year (32 vs 25). This is 3 points better than after the last game.
    • 8 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (32 vs 24). This is 3 points better than after the last game.
    • 9 points better than the '40 point' line (32 vs 23). This is 2 points better than after the last game.

Finally back above QSF season and well above last year :)

It was around now that the QSF season tailed off, so I would like to think that we will stay above that line for the remainder of the season.

I know it doesn't really work like this but we have 32 points from 22, I can't see why, barring injuries, that we can't continue the ~1.5 points/match ratio. So somewhere between 50 and 55 would be great.

  22. According to Skybet we are twice as likely to make the champions league (500/1) as to go down (1000/1)

    Meaningless but somehow comforting.

I think that kind of points return - which is certainly achievable - would give us an excellent chance of finishing 7th. COYH!!!!

If the winner of the Carabao Cup is above us in the table, does that mean 7th isn try into the Europa play offs?

    I think we'll finish 7th with around 60 points.

Here's where I believe we'll pick up our points. I think, and I know it's a tall order, but we'll win nearly every remaining home fixture. Maybe Arsenal will be tricky, so I've put that as a draw. So that's 7 wins and 1 draw which gives us 22 points. I think we'll win a couple of away games too at Huddersfield and Cardiff. That's 28 points more which will give us a 60 points final total, which will certainly give us 7th position.

For 7th to be worth a Europa League place in the first place you need the winners of the FA Cup and League Cup to be 6th or higher in the PL. And even then 7th is only good for an entry into the 2nd qualifying round of the Europa League - which is the 'prize' for winning the League Cup. To get into the competition proper there are two qualifying rounds and the play-off round to negotiate.

What if we finish 7th and win the FA Cup?

  28. hornetboy1

The winner of this season's Carabao Cup is going to be a top 6 club. So just the FA Cup really.

We're going to win the FA Cup anyway, so either way, 7th place or FA Cup, we'll be in the Europa League next season.....you heard it here first :D

Then we would get the FA Cup european place - which is a Group Stage place in the Europa League - and 6th place would get the rancid early qualifying route instead.

Is Europe really something we should be wishing for at this time.
We are only just beginning to look like a top ten outfit and to add another competition on the squad might not do us much good.
It might be better build on our current form and establish ourselves as a top ten outfit before advancing to Europe.
It hasn't done Burnley much good this year

Amazing that in our 4th season since promotion we've not dropped below "the 40 points line" at any point of any season if you ignore the first 4 matches. Stunning achievement.

Personally, I think it would be a good thing. I know historically, smaller clubs struggle with it, but Watford have a very good squad. It would be perfect for us. We could use our FA Cup, Carabao Cup team in these matches, especially in the early stages. It would utilise all members of the squad.

I think the fans would be really into it as well. European football for only the second time in our history, plus it's an attraction to potential players who are a little on the fence about signing for us, that could be the deal clincher.

Let's just win the fa cup, league cup and finish in 4th, then we are covered from all bases.

Right now we are simply not ready for Europe & the ultimate damage it would cause. Forget it.

It would be an excellent season to finish top 10 on 50-55 points. Should be looking at building slow & steady marginal improvements year on year.

European aims from 2021/22, assuming world has not blown up by then.

Until we are relegated next season.

There is no guarantee we will be in this position again, if we get into Europe it would be incredible no matter what stage it might be. There are a million clubs who have been up here for a while and have now sunk out of contention, either in a charlton-esque collapse or an Everton-esque malaise.

You can't assume our improvement will be continuous
