Guys can we please stop posting/referring to people as past dictators and libel status group? This is not the first time this issue has been brought up and we don't know who else reads this forum and they could get offended or worse by reading such descriptive terms used even if it is tongue-in-cheek so to speak. Please, refer to people by their names and not relate them to any movement or group that could/will cause offence. This is a family forum and such languages should be reserved for other forums who support such actions, not WFC Forums. If anymore is seen or reported by any poster. swift and severe action will be taken. Skyla x
It's not reasonable though. On one basic point, even before you get in to any considerations of their personalities, politicians are meant to be elected representatives of the people, while business owners have built or purchased the entity and so do not necessarily have the same degree of duty and responsibility to serve. But more pertinently, you didn't merely compare them to said Italian dictator, but also said you wanted them to meet the same fate, which was to be executed. That is very far from being "reasonable".
Is there a reward for tracking down and finding the sense of humour some people have unfortunately managed to lose today? If so, I will take a break from work and see if I can help by joining the search party.
Unfortunately we live in an ultra super sensitive world where there is always someone “potentially” offended at something. The ability to laugh and joke publicly is practically nonexistent.
I work overseas. I teach international students. I’m based in two countries. And my partner is German. Maybe my sense of humour can be an acquired taste at times, and I accept that one or two people might not have liked me replacing Pozzo’s name with a historical figure and obviously as a long-standing and hopefully generally responsible forum member I wouldn’t wish to cause offence, but it was all meant light-heartedly. I’m a qualified journalist from my past life, I can assure the mods there was nothing remotely libellous there. Anyway it’s been removed, let’s move on. I’m not the story here.
Sky, if we are going to have a sensible discussion about libel, defamation etc, can I urge caution on the Bayat thread? There are lots of uses of adjectives such as crooked, dodgy, bent there, from myself included I’m ashamed to say, and I don’t think the person involved has yet been convicted of any misdemeanour? (Despite most of our suspicions). Adding the word ‘alleged’ in front of those adjectives should negate any risk of the person being tempted to sue for defamation. He’s committed alleged crimes, because a court has made those allegations and it’s in the public domain. In my professional judgement, that thread is skating more closely to the ice than this one, with my idiotic comments about the club being run like a dictatorship etc. Comparing GP to Il Duce might have offended a few people (and I apologise for that) but it wasn’t libellous. It was simply a comparison.
Are you sure it’s not libellous? “A is liable for saying anything to C about B which would be apt to make the average citizen think worse of the latter.” (Tony Weir, Tort Law).
More defamatory than libellous I think. Plus it wasn’t a statement as such but merely swapping somebody’s name for somebody else’s. However, I accept.not everybody found it amusing or even pleasant, so it was removed and I apologised The point of my post tonight wasn’t to continue discussing the M word, but as the topic of libel was raised by the mods, to urge caution about a thread whose subject is involved in an on-going court procedure etc.
Libel is simply a subset of defamation. It’s obvious to whom you are referring, so I don’t think that the swapping makes any difference. I agree with your caution about the other thread, though.
Well, Tony Weir was one of the greatest tort lawyers of his generation. However, I did filch this quote from Wiki (much to Mrs K’s annoyance, since she writes and teaches on this), and admittedly it doesn’t provide the context…
Speaking of Maltesers, why they brought out a Dark Chocolate version is beyond me. Give me an 'After Eight' any day instead. I suppose some people really like the dark chocolate versions but for me it's just too much coco.
