How they got away with 2-0 god knows. They got absolutely battered. 33 shots to 1!

Almost got something more out of it too! 0-0 would have been brilliant for them, 1-0 they'd have had a decent chance, but 2-0 against arguably the best team in Europe this season is a tough ask...

Bad times for two former Watford promotion heroes as Matty Vydra's Viktoria Plzen get knocked out, meanwhile Billy McKinlay got sent off for West Ham

Villa bit jammy - particularly the keeper.

Martinez getting away with a red card despite being booked twice due to a quirk in the rule book.

Ah well the grinning scary bloke is out of the CL due to an outstanding performance from Atlanta last week. They were pretty average tonight and managed to pull just one back. So no CL, no FA Cup. A bit of a lame duck ending to Klopp's Anfield tenure. Credit Atlanta, I hope they make the final. Decent outfit and were very much underrated by Liverpool last week before the game.

Oh and Klopp if you somehow end up reading this thread, remember these famous words from 2020.

"Hughes just about keeps that in.."
    "Deeney... good ball..."
"Now Sarr, he can run into space here, past Loverin, past Van Dkye..."
"ISMILA SARR!!" Watford two to the good!"

    ....

    "Invincibles no more!"

    Love, Watford FC.

So at the beginning of the week we have 5 top English clubs represented in 5 quarter finals in 3 European cup competitions…

And all we are left with is Villa sneaking through in the tin potty cup..

And with City knocked out they will now concentrate and steamroller the league to become English champions for the 4th year running…

What a sad week for English football…

A sad week for “customers” of English football clubs but a worse week for some billionaire investors and Middle East states, though at least PSG are still flying the flag.

Hopefully the club do the right thing and arrange a minute's hysterical laughter before kick off tomorrow. At the going down of the co-efficient points, and on the midweek nights without FA Cup replays, we will remember them!

Preferable for English clubs to win European competitions , but City winning the league won’t be brilliant, just sad.

Respectfully disagree, gives them more money (CL prize money is huuuge) to grow the disparity between the normal clubs even more. Feeds into the sickening circle jerk from Sky/the media that the PL is the best league in the world (and it’s LIVE Tm ) And the arrogance that English teams should beat teams like Bayern and Real etc. The fact that they all wanted to breakaway and have their own European league as well, makes their failure even funnier. Not to mention success would mean a quarter of the PL in the champions league, no thanks.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t begrudge a team like Fulham a uefa cup run, but the big clubs can go **** themselves, them failing is never not funny in any scenario.

That's the sad thing and that is CL overload for those who haven't got a dog in the fight .
Too many teams , too many games ......no one cares

Bad week for Spurs too - without even playing .

The poor results of the English teams means 5th probably won’t get a Champions league so basically them or Villa have to get 4th and I feel looking at the games to come the latter will.

Would mean Spurs, would need to beat Liverpool and or Man City to get into Europe, that would likely help Arsenal win the league... Conundrum city.

And as reported in the media, Man Utd loanee Jordan Sancho helps German clubs gain the extra space - at the expense of Man Utd. Who may miss out completely anyway.

What the season needs is a situation where two teams need a point to achieve their aims and play a tap about at the back like they did in Belgium? A few weeks ago. That would really advertise the league for what it is.

    I quite like the CL.

I just don’t care whether “English” teams win it.

Preferable cos of pride in true English clubs with British players* winning a European trophy.
For pity’s sake man, where’s your sense of patriotism, National Identity and pride in your Anglo Saxon/ Celtic/ Norman/Viking/Roman etc roots?

    * just ‘forget’ that Abby Darby is owned by an oil rich state, regularly flouts FFP rules with the hiring of the best lawyers and is stacked full of johnny foreigners.

Wait till you see next season’s format. 8 group games each. Group games after Xmas. Dead rubbers everywhere. Almost impossible for a big club to be knocked out. Then endless knock out games to arrive at a semi final. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  24. EnjoytheGame

Oh I'm really looking forward to it. I don't think the broadcasters, talk show hosts and pundits have turned their attention to it yet so they haven't got their heads round just what a tedious non-event it's going to be until the knock-out games.

When they do realise just how rubbish it is, they'll feel immense pressure to try to convince everyone it's actually really good to see Real Madrid play Bayern in a repeat of last year's semi-final in September when literally nothing hinges on it whatsoever.

There's going to be so many matches that mean almost nothing in the grand scheme of things.

There's one thing I like about the new format, and that's that Champions League and Europa League failures no longer get parachuted down to the Europa/Conference League, but it'll make an already dull group stage even worse, and it's already been used as an excuse to make sweeping changes elsewhere

  26. Jumbolina

It’s because you have to go some to get knocked outs. If you come 24th out of 32 you make it to the knock out stages!!!! I actually like the current format as it normally retains interest. Group of 4, first place is a seed, second place stays in champions league, 3rd spot Europa playoff and 4th spot is dead. The new format is going to be dreadful.

The current group stage used to be great, but it became largely a procession for the bigger teams really. The CL doesn't get started until the knockout rounds, and no more dead rubbers in this bloated group stage will change that!
