At the end of the day it comes down to semantics and what you feel is appropriate use of the word. I’m not going to argue with you, and you are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

At the end of the day I would never describe a person in the same terms as a piece of excrement. To me it doesn’t seem right or fair on the individual.

I might use it to describe a collective performance, but never solely at an individual.

Abuse comes in many forms and I am by no means accusing Sinatra of doing anything intentionally, but it could be interpreted by the individual as such.

In recent times I’ve lost two friends to mental health issues, and in my profession it is a massive issue. I will therefore always stand up for what I believe in.

And I respect your opinion if it’s different.

 

Fair comments both sides. I understand the world is changing and whilst I certainly don’t accept my post as “abuse”, I’ll admit it’s abrasive and there’s nicer way to put things.

Noted, we all make mistakes and can be a tad dramatic sometimes, assuming these people don’t see things. Apologies to Tobi and anyone offended.

 

For me this is a massive over-reaction and completely unfair to the poster you are targeting.

 

No particular poster is being targeted, rather their post caused a reaction to the way the forum in general uses language in a very black & white way

There appears to be a mindset on here that you can either be appalling or great - there is no in-between and, as lowerrous pointed out recently, little or no room for improvement is ever (maybe rarely) given consideration

 

Of course he's being targeted. You can't get away with saying "not a dig at you" and then quote someone and focus on their words over and over again.

I have no opinion on the player, I simply object to a poster being called out with such a lack of proportionality.

To my mind optimistichornet has all but said wfcsinatra's post was a tipping point for them to write what they did about the forum in general, using the latest post by wfcsinatra to highlight how they see things

Perhaps it would've been useful to dig up posts of a similar vein by others so that it was obvious no one poster was being targeted but, to me at least, that didn't need to be done as anyone reading the forum on a regular basis will see it's littered with such derogatory criticism

 

It was the tactic of a coward. "I'm not having a dig at you". And then have a massive dig at him.

As to your wider point, sure the forum has some derogatory views on players, managers, owners. What forum doesn't?

If this forum is unacceptable, we might as well pack up and go home - have you seen twitter. Have you seen the abuse poor tennis players get from losing gamblers? It's outrageous. That is the stuff that needs to stop, not the odd swear word/derogatory term on a largely civil football forum.

I've been called many derogatory things in my lifetime. Most of them probably fair!

 

If anyone has seen interviews with Tobi last season you will know that he is very humble and a very likeable lad. He's played very few first team minutes and is only 18 ffs, why anyone would slag him off in the first place I don't know.

 

And if he will be good enough one day, great, if not, there's no shame in that as we are currently playing in what is possibly one of the top 10 leagues in the world

 

Again, if someone says “get him in the team!” or something of the like, I’m allowed to disagree. Could I have worded it better? Yeah, sure.

That does not change my opinion that Tobi Adeyemo is nowhere near being a first-team player.

 

@Jumbolina - I think wfcsinatra's post (#116) shows it's possible to post a criticism without using what can be interpreted as abusive language

As you rightly point out, twitter is an awful place for abuse of people whether they're in the public eye or not, and while terms used like the one which started this debate are used on other forums, it doesn't mean it's any more valid to use. Abusive terms are abusive terms no matter where or how often they're used

I think it was UEA_Hornet who said in this thread it's a slippery slope if we start policing the forum and stifle debate by censoring posts/language (I may have paraphrased that, sorry UEA) but is it a huge ask to be mindful we're posting about people who are multifaceted and are capable of change over time - anyone going to point out our owner at this point!?! - and if a moments thought is given as to what we post, we may actually make a more informed opinion which could initiate a conversation rather than share a crude criticism which will just as likely get lost on the wind

I have no problem with Sinatra but his post is the one that generated the discussion with UEA, so it felt fair to use it as an example.

 

Also in case anyone wonders what I called our ex director of football it was d I c K. But based on his relationship with another forum member it is almost certainly justified.

 

So where do we draw the line with this? As has been stated, to describe something as ‘dog sh1t” doesn’t actually mean they’re/it is ‘dog ****’ it means they’re/it isn’t very good.

What if we watch a **** film, can we still call it a **** film, or are we worried the director or one of the actors might come on here and get upset, thinking their film is actual real excrement?

What if we have a **** meal? Might we offend the chef in question and lead them to believe they’ve made a meal that actually tastes like feces?

To be on the safe side shall we just rule out all metaphors on here, to completely avoid any confusion or potential offence?

And I would very much doubt that there are many 18 y.o. who are 1st team ready at any club

 

In the modern game I’d say it’s more the exception that they aren’t ready at age 18, but at the very least they will be showing significant promise at that age.

Yes of course 18 is very young and there is plenty of development still to do at that age, but I’m sure you could name at least one at every club who is in fact ready.

 

With a player like Tobi strength will be a significant part of his game and building up his upper body strength will take time . When he is 25 he will be a lot stronger than he is now.
I am not saying that he will make the grade but I certainly won't judge him as a teenager who is expected to compete physically with experienced battle hardened centre halves .

Not sure anyone has said that, just that he might improve as others have after a proper break and pre-season. Who knows ? Not guaranteed but possible.

 

And many have described him as ‘non league standard’ which could be taken literally and hurt his feelings.

Agreed- as you posted previously there were some rumours on why he went to a poorly performing side but since he went their form has really nosedived, albeit not down to his playing.

 

You'd hope Adeyemo would be at least good enough to force himself in to a National League side regardless of the manager though.

 

I didn't realise that, only lasted 73 days, not good for an ex Horn!
